3 The Pious Pelican January - February 2014 Volume 53, No. 1 Director s Report At our recent board meeting at Blackhawk, our first order of business was to choose officers for the year. Among the open positions was the Director position, which was vacated by Hal Schuette at the end of Hal did a wonderful job as Director in 2013 and Becky likewise with her position of Tour Coordinator. The board nominated and voted to put me in the position of Director for the 2014 year and I thank them for their confidence. You can find a list of all the members of the board on the page just opposite this message. As you know, all of us serve our club as volunteers. Our goal is always to provide an opportunity for Packard enthusiasts to enjoy the cars and have associations with those who do. Our new Tour Director, Joe Munsch is planning a fabulous outing in March that will include a stop at the renowned collection of Jack Passey. If you ve never been to Jack s collection, this is an absolute must see. Your experience at Jack s will be escalated if you do a bit of homework so if you can, find a copy of Jack s book For the Love of Old Cars and give it a good read. It s hard to put down once you begin! Many of the cars in the book will be available for viewing at the collection and because you ll know the story behind the cars, the experience will be that much richer and interesting. On April 27 th, we are heading for a garage tour to Petaluma. We will be visiting a garage that has never been visited before and will see Packards plus lots of other interesting vehicles particularly 50s big fin cars. We will have a lunch stop as well and can enjoy driving our Packards on wonderful country roads. Have you attended a Packard National meet lately? I had more fun than I thought possible at the 2013 meet in Pontiac, Michigan. This year, the meet is in the birthplace of Packard: Warren, Ohio from July 15-20, They haven t hosted a meet since the Packard Centennial in 1999 so here is a great chance to head to, or back to, Warren. The Western Regions Tour is being organized this year by Milton Wheeler who is also the Secretary on our Board. The tour is based out of Monterey and will be May This is a great opportunity to see Packards not normally seen since this tour includes the Silver Circle (Nevada) and the Earle C. Anthony (Los Angeles) regions of PAC. As always, we are looking for ideas of garages to see and tours we should be making. Please contact a board member to express your ideas or come to our next board meeting in April; your presence is always welcome and appreciated. So, get those Packards ready for a great season of touring and fun with your Northern California Packard region. Hope to see everyone on the road. 3 Jeff Mihaly

We kicked off the 2014 Nor-Cal Packards events season with another visit to Blackhawk Automotive Museum on Sunday, January 12 th for A Day at the Movies. This year s feature was the PBS documentary, A Ride Along The Lincoln Highway, which took us along America's first coast-to-coast paved highway, following the route from Times Square to San Francisco. Members enjoyed popcorn and movie candy provided by hosts Mary Jane and Bob McCoy and Eddie and George Beck. After our deli sandwich lunch, we were treated to a real-life perspective of traveling the Lincoln Highway from Carolee and Milton Wheeler. They shipped their 1947 Custom Super Eight sedan to New York City and 6 (Continued on page 9)

Members also had the opportunity to view the Blackhawk Automotive Museum display of special automobiles. As an added treat, the European Train Enthusiasts provided a display of model trains complete with extensive landscaping which was enjoyed by kids of all ages. There was a nice showing of Packards on the Plaza in front of the museum. The display included: convertible coupe Mary Jane and Bob McCoy Super Eight touring sedan Eddie and George Beck Eight coupe Pam and Fred Hill station wagon Mary and Ron Carpenter Custom Super Eight sedan Carolee and Milton Wheeler Clipper Deluxe sedan Bill Young and Ellie Power Also attending: Jack Holmes and guests, Mike Kumlar and Mike Apcar Joseph Munsch Susan and Phil Sherman Linda and Jerry Wuichet Rick and Paul Young (who brought his 1967 Buick convertible) 9

10 BOARD MEMBERS AT THE FIRST MEETING OF THE YEAR: L-R: Steve Weir- Assistant Director, Jeff Mihaly-Director, Milton Wheeler-Secretary, Mark Barchas- Treasurer, George Beck-Website, Phil Sherman-Projects, Fred Hill-Historian, Bob McCoy-Technical Lead, Bill Young-Membership, and Joe Munsch-Tour Director. The last car to pay cash on the Golden Gate Bridge was this 37 Packard owned by the Bridge District. The sign on the Wheelers car told of their travels. 10 A Day at the Movies at the Blackhawk Museum.

11 NEWS Wednesday, March 27, 2013 was a momentous day on the famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, when the last cash toll was collected by Marilyn Alvarado a veteran toll-taker who had been on the job for over twenty-nine years. She collected the last toll taken by a human being, shortly after midnight, from Jim Eddie, Bridge District President from Mendocino County, who was accompanied by Brian Sobel, District board member from Sonoma County, in the maroon 37 Packard owned by the Bridge District. When the bridge opened in 1937, the toll was fifty cents for each direction, with a five-cent charge if over 3 passengers. The promise was that as the bridge was paid off, the toll would be reduced. In July of 1950, the toll was reduced to forty cents each way and in December, the extra five cents for over 3 in the car was eliminated. On February 1, 1955 (Continued on page 12) 11

12 (Continued from page 11) the toll was reduced to thirty cents each way and on October 1, 1955 it was further reduced to twenty-five cents. In October 1968 it was decided to only collect the toll in the southbound direction in an effort to improve traffic flow during the evening rush. The charge was fifty cents southbound and free northbound. In 1974 toll was raised to seventy-five cents and was raised to one dollar in In an effort to get people to car pool, a complicated set of rules were implemented after 1978 where during certain hours cars with three or more passengers paid no toll and others paid, first $1.25 and later $2.00. From 1991 through 2001 the toll was $3.00 with discounts available for advance-purchase ticket books. Starting in 2002 cash toll was $5 and $4 for an automatic electronic pay device called FasTrak. In 2008 the rate for cash was raised to $6 and $5 for FasTrak. In 2010 reductions were offered for car pools and finally in 2013, cash would no longer be allowed. The preferred method is to use FasTrak that deducts tolls from a prepaid account or credit card on file. Another option is to register your license plate and have your credit card charged as your plate is read. If your plate is not registered it will be read and a bill sent to the registered owner for the regular toll. If paid within 21 days, there is no penalty charged. It is recommended that tourists who cross the bridge in rental cars ask about company policy regarding fees and service charges before crossing the bridge. As seen in the photo below, Packards were among the first cars to cross the bridge on opening day 1937, and in the photo on the left a Packard was the last one to pay a cash toll to a person, as well. 12

13 More on The Golden Gate Bridge Construction of the bridge began in 1933, and the next year, the Earle C. Anthony Packard agency made arrangements for a publicity shoot at the construction site with a 34 Packard, as shown in these photos. 13
