1 WAY FREIGHT Feb 2019 Volume 36, Issue 2 Track Talk On our last Work Day, sections of the Turntable & Skinner Yard Leads were removed and the original drain was removed. The old system consisted of concrete blocks laid sideways using the cells as the conduit. Half of the blocks were filled with silt rendering them useless. After some hard work, the blocks were removed and using a section of 12 PVC pipe we had on hand, a new drain was installed. Ken Matassa & Jayson & Kyler Stevenson. A job well done. After this project was completed, we had several storms through the area and the new system worked very well. Due to the Banquet and the Great Train Show, the next Work Day is currently scheduled for Saturday March 9. The plan is too complete the Turntable Lead and replacing two switches. Page 2 A FIRST CLASS RAILROAD BY PRESIDENT GARY GORMAN The last months has been very busy for OCME. As we start the new year, our first major project has been to order a new locomotive.

The owners, Mike and Linda Hedquist assure us that the locomotive will be ready by Sept., 2019.

2 Page 2 A FIRST CLASS RAILROAD BY PRESIDENT GARY GORMAN The last months has been very busy for OCME. As we start the new year, our first major project has been to order a new locomotive. We placed an order with The Train Works for a two axle, gas/hydraulic GP38. The company is located in Sutherlin, Oregon and was recommended by the president of Train Mountain. The owners, Mike and Linda Hedquist assure us that the locomotive will be ready by Sept., We have begun reviewing our Operating Rules and Club By-Laws to update and remove some ambiguous language in the documents. After the Board completes these modifications, the documents will be submitted to the Membership for a vote. One of the objectives is to establish an age requirement for engineers pulling the public that can be legally justified. Another objective is to clarify the voting process for Board Members. DJ, Hank & Zack have began a passenger car maintenance program that includes servicing the trucks, couplers, seats and overall appearance of our rolling stock. After completing passenger cars, they will work on cabooses, gondolas, etc. While this is underway, Glen Swain, Terry Cummings & Jeff Garrett have been keeping our aging locomotives rolling. In addition to these efforts, the track crew has been busy replacing old track & switches. And this is just the care & maintenance of the railroad. The other important component is our Train Crews. A typical Public Run Day requires about 8 train crews or 16 people. In addition, we usually operate 6 Birthday Party Trains a month, requiring another 12 people. As you can see, we need the ACTIVE participation of the membership to keep the Mackerel Flats & Goat Hill Junction Railroad operating safe and efficiently. If we can t afford to keep the railroad up, we will not be able to operate our own equipment. In addition to the tasks above, there are other activities that need attention. Feb. 23 rd, we hosted 50 Sunburst Youth Academy cadets to perform work assignments at our facility. We had four members to help direct the cadets through the Academy staff. The following activities took place: 1. The compound was cleaned at the direction of Ken Matassa. 2. The pepper trees, anise plants, and tumble weeds were removed along the fence between Skinner Yard and the golf course under the direction of Terry Cummings. 3. Along the right-of-way from Skinner Yard to the Mehren Water Tower grass and weeds were removed between the rails and anise plants and tumble weeds beside the rails under the direction of Bob Harrison. 4. Zach Jones drove the maintenance train and directed his crew to pick up the bagged trash. There is still a lot to do, and the Sunburst Youth Academy has volunteered to bring two more work parties of cadets to help on Sat. Mar. 23 rd and Sat. Apr. 6 th. We will need to have four volunteers to help at each of the events. Continued on page 4

Hanksterc@aol.com High Iron Continued Craig Okun is in need of track building volunteers to prepare the quantity of track panels to support the track laying crews. Craig will train you so no prior experience is necessary. A plan will soon be presented for the recertification of conductors and engineers. This will take the form of a video or power point presentation. A short quiz will be given to attendees so they can evaluate their own. understanding of the material presented. The quiz will NOT be graded or collected, but will be discussed. We are proposing that the Engineer s Certification test include a engine rerailing section. We currently have inconsistencies in the age requirements for Conductors and Engineers. We will soon be submitting a plan to rectify this to a single set of requirements. By Hank Castignetti BIRTHDAY CREWS NEEDED Many of our birthdays have been rained out so far this year leaving the club short of needed income, as well as many sad little faces! These birthdays are a major source of our revenue and are one of the major reasons we currently have a new engine on order. Most of our Saturday party openings are booked weeks or months in advance so when a party gets rained out it is difficult to quickly reschedule it. No one wants to put off a child s birthday party for very long, so many times we must simply refund their money and hope they hold next years birthday with us. One solution to this problem is to rebook birthday parties on upcoming Sundays, since they are always open. This may allow a parent to reschedule THIS Saturday s party on NEXT Sunday and keep their little engineer happy. Larry has a challenging job to recruit two crews every Saturday and finding people on a Sunday, at short notice, is even more difficult. Betty does a tremendous job of juggling these bookings but cannot confirm a rescheduled Sunday party unless Larry can confirm a crew. Please help OCME (and especially Larry!) to recoup some our party revenue and keep the children smiling. So if you can crew a Sunday train after church, or after breakfast with the family, please contact Larry as soon as you can. This emergency situation will be solved as soon as the weather pattern breaks but until then we need a list of potential volunteers to help out. Please call or Larry if you can do at least one Sunday party over the next month. AND DON T FORGET THE ONGOING NEED FOR SATURDAY CREWS!! Larry Ogle H: C: oglerail@gmail.com BENCH CAR UPDATE 33 of our 39 bench cars have had their trucks serviced and have been spiffed up cosmetically. In addition to bearings and couplers, DJ has repainted side rails and replaced torn and chipped unit numbers. Next all control cars, cabooses, gondolas, and miscellaneous work cars will get his attention. Thanks Deej! NEW TV! Last month I asked if anyone had a flat screen TV they could donate to the club. DAVE SMITH has generously donated a large-screen TV that will be mounted in the clubhouse to be used for Engineer/Conductor training as well as entertainment.
