I believe this would be Track 6. We removed the old switch, just south of the crossing, south of the station and determined that the new switch would not fit because of a curve. Instead, we installed two sections of new track and removed the switch from the system. This was a dead end spur to the BBQ Siding (?) and is less than 200' in length. This section could be removed at some point in the future. We should be able to recycle these sections of track since they have black synthetic ties. The work crew consisted of Gary Gorman, Jeff Garrett, Andy Romer, Luis Aguirre, Mark Johnson, Ken Matassa, Zack Jones, David Smith, and Adam Dupre family. Thanks To Gary Gorman and Jeff Summers for organizing the work day. Thank you all for our unwavering support. 2 Page 2 O.C.M.E Newsletter A FIRST CLASS RAILROAD BY PRESIDENT GEORGE SHEARER Hi everyone! Well, I have some good news. On Tuesday September 4 th, the Costa Mesa City Council unanimously approved the License Agreement with OCME for the use of Fairview Park as it was presented to them by the Parks and Recreation Commission, with no changes. The agreement is for 20 years, ending 9/9/2038, and may be extended by two additional five year periods upon mutual written agreement. This is in essence a 30 year agreement! Many members have worked hard the past few years to attain an agreement with some substance and longevity, and we should all be proud of this accomplishment. Now I have some not so good news pertaining to the club s new locomotive ordered with Titan Trains. Last month I reported that our locomotive was on the build list for September. So, it s now the end of September and we have no new locomotive. The word from Titan Trains is that they are still back-logged and do not have a new delivery date. I will continue to press them for results. Club Work Day was hot, yet again. Due to the anticipated high temperature the crews started early on the track work and miscellaneous work around the compound as to be completed before noon. Locomotive 596 is down with premature wear to the drive wheels. This is very much a surprise because we just replaced the wheels two years ago. There is a host of members assisting Glen Swain to get the 596 back up and running as soon as possible. It wasn t long ago that I reported the club compound was burglarized, and now we had an attempted break-in earlier this month when someone tried to gain access into the clubhouse through the sliding window. The alarm sounded and apparently scared off the would-be thief as there doesn t seem to be anything missing from the compound. The last major Operations event for the Year is our Annual Christmas (Santa Claus) Public Ride Weekend Dec, Planning is nearing completion for this event. Check the website for current information. We are a smile factory, kids of all ages come to us and we do our best to send them off with a smile. Thank you to our Birthday Party Crews Classification Yard "Where things get sorted out" PRESIDENTS MESSAGE CONTINUED We had another hot sunny weekend for the public run. We ended up pulling 919 people on Saturday and 918 people on Sunday for a grand total of 1837 people. The count is very close to last month s count, which also saw a hot month. I recently received a report from Larry Ogle, our Birthday Train Director. Although we are booked up almost every weekend with parties, he is having a difficult time finding crews to man the trains. Remember that every member is asked to volunteer one Saturday every six months to support the birthday trains. The Birthday Parties are the club s greatest stream of revenue and we can t afford to cancel a party for lack of crews. Please take the time and lend a hand. Remember that Work Day is the first Saturday of the month, October 6th There is plenty of work to be done, so come on out and join in the fun!
