Dear Members, A letter from the East Coast! David and I are on our annual trip to the other half of our amazing country. I think of it as our Open-Space reality check and recharge!! We stay with dear friends we met while all posted to Belgrade, Yugoslavia in Three other couples we ve bonded to and kept in touch all these years, visiting routinely cross-country. This year, all meeting in Waynesville, North Carolina, deep in the great Smoky mountains. The motor trip took us from the Eastern shore of the Chesapeake in Maryland through Washington D.C., Virginia, Tennessee, on into North Carolina via Interstate 81, which parallels the Blue Ridge Parkway. So we motor by and through portions of the Appalachian Mountain range, the Shenandoah and great Smoky Mountains.... continued inside on page 2 Opinions expressed not necessarily those of all members. 2 Page 2 October/November 2010 President's Message... continued from page one We were a little early for the fall color changes - but the millions of trees are mind boggling to those of us who live in Southern California and struggle to plant and water shade trees - and I don t mean those PALM varieties!! Horse country in Virginia is rolling green hills of livestock - oblivious to the fact that they enjoy acres of fresh grass to roam, instead of a 24 x 24 stall (and turn out paddock), if they are lucky. Which brings me back to my Norco/Open Space reality check. Besides wanting to protect the few open space back drop features Norco enjoys, such as the hillsides of so called Rattle-Snake mountain, Beacon Hill, and the Wyle property.. the Open-Space lately challenged has been the PAKA or Primary Animal Keeping Area. The PAKA is the physical reality of the only Open-Space Norconians can claim as they attempt to preserve a lifestyle, surrounded by over built urban development, cemented and asphalted beyond true necessity. As animal keeping enthusiasts - whether we have critters or not - our passion for the lifestyle and protection of future Norconian s ability to enjoy some breathing room and back yard agricultural endeavors, requires us to remember our Charter trinity of the PAKA, horse trails, and A120 zoning cannot be taken for granted in Horsetown U.S.A. Pat J Attend City Council meetings to find out what is really going on in the city. Hear for yourselves what is actually going on in the city regarding budget issues, Silverlakes, and other city business. Stop relying on misinformation and edited versions of what occurred. Come and hear it for yourselves and become educated on the issues. Too many times people form opinions or spread rumors based on misinformation and gossip. The next City Council meeting will be on Wednesday, October 20th at 7pm. There are also 2 City Budget meetings coming up on Mondays, October 25th and November 8th at 1pm at City Hall. 4 Page 4 October/November 2010 On Saturday, Oct 9th approximately 20 neighbors got together to clean up weeds, brush, and trim trees in the street parkways and trails. The areas cleaned up were on Crestview, Wildhorse, Warmblood, Cavalletti, Stable Way, Cutting Horse, and Branding Iron streets. We used 5 pickup trucks and hauled approximately 15 truckloads of weeds, brush, and tree trimmings to a dumpster. It was great to see so many neighbors come out and help their community. It improved the appearance of the neighborhood and brought pride and satisfaction to the neighbors who participated in the clean up. Talk to your neighbors and organize your own neighborhood clean up day. On November 13th there will be a large organized Norco Clean up Day event and I hope all of you will be able to participate. 6 Page 6 October/November 2010 The date has been set for the Norco Trails Cleanup Day and it is November 13th. Sign-up and job assignments will be done at Pikes Peak Park. Waste Management will be hosting a barbeque at Pikes Peak in the afternoon for all of the volunteers. See the flyer in this issue of the newsletter. Norco Trails Cleanup Day is a City wide trail cleanup project sponsored by the Norco Horsemen s Association, the City of Norco and Waste Management. This is not just an NHA project. The City of Norco does not have the money or manpower to maintain the horse trails as we can all see in our neighborhoods. There are no LMD Funds to pay an outside contractor to repair and maintain our horse trails in the areas that we will be working. It is up to us the residents of Norco to come together and get the job done. The project got off the ground from a grant from Waste Management for $5,000 and is being coordinated through the Norco Horsemen s Association. The Project team has been busy spending the grant money. They have ordered gas powered weed eaters, gas powered tree trimmers, rakes, hoes, gas powered post hole diggers, posters and flyers. There is a lot of support for this project and some of the groups that want to be involved are: The Norco Mounted Posse, Norco High FFA, Boy Scout Troop 421, 4H club of Norco, RURAL, Norconian Foundation, about ten Church Groups and the City of Norco Department of Parks and Recreation. The more people that come and help the more work we can accomplish in a short period of time. We are planning to work on North Drive between California and the City Limits, Park Ridge between First Street and Second Street, Seventh Street between. Pedley and Valley View, California between Seventh Street and Grulla Court. If more people show up we can add more trails to cleanup. Our next meeting will be October 26th at 7:00 pm at the Six Street Fire Station.
