1 In the Eye News from Hurricane Gulch Yacht Club Nov./Dec Volume 114 Issue 12 From the Commodore Well we are winding down another fun year at our Yacht Club and just where did 2017 go? The year seemed to pass way too fast. Guess that goes along with the saying that when you re having fun, time really does fly. I d first like to thank my board of directors for a job well done for all their help in making sure the club activities went as scheduled. I d like to say a BIG Thank You to all the members for their time in volunteering to arrange the monthly dinner meetings which were all huge successes, and to the volunteers that put our cruises together. They were always fun-- the planned activities and even the hikes that many participated in-- and we couldn t ask for better happy hours on the host boats and on shore, again great food and social hours. Something Special placed third in the Holiday Spirit category at the LA Harbor Annual Boat Parade on Saturday, December 2 I d like to reach out to the other yacht club members that joined us on our Catalina cruises. We loved having you join us and hope you re planning on cruising with us again next year. 2 HGYC Monthly Dinner Friday, November 3, 2017 The dinner for November featured delicious Indian cuisine hosted by Mark and Meera Hibdon and Trish and Ralph Johns. Following dinner Commodore George Miller welcomed guest Rich Kennedy, bowman on Tim Racisz s Aries and inducted HGYC s newest member Trish Krusee. The evening s program featured Alice Taylor, marketing director for the Tall Ships. She explained their various programs and invited anyone interested to participate in any of their volunteer opportunities. A flyer listing the details of the November cruise to Avalon to be hosted by Idelle Clarke, Tim Racisz, and Kim and Marc Bacon was distributed. Commodore Miller reminded members that annual membership dues of $170 are being collected for Trish Krusee, HGYC s newest member pictured above with Commodore George Miller, has a power boat named Cham-pag-nee Lady in California Yacht Marina. The 55th LA Harbor Boat Parade will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2nd and Something Special will be the lead boat. Diane Jones and George Miller have invited all members to help them decorate their boat starting at 10am on Sat. Dec. 2nd and all are welcome to ride on their boat for the boat parade. 3 HGYC Cruise to Avalon November 17-19, 2017 HGYC s November cruise to Avalon was hosted by Idelle Clarke, Tim Racisz, and Kim and Marc Bacon. The weather was sunny and warm, perfect cruising weather in Southern California for HGYC s seven boats. Friday night Happy Hour was held aboard Something Special. Then Saturday morning folks hiked to the Wrigley Memorial and played miniature golf Saturday afternoon. Low score Roger Murry with 3 holes in one; high score Kim Bacon. Saturday dinner was at the new Blue Water Grill overlooking Avalon Bay. At Happy Hour Harry Kumpis heard no evil, John Hart spoke no evil, and Chuck Syndergaard saw no evil.so a good time was had by all! 4 HGYC December Dinner Meeting Pot Luck Friday, December 1, 2017 What a wonderful way to end 2017 at Hurricane Gulch Yacht Club an overwhelming abundance of good food, adult libations, and the laughter and good cheer among friends. We brought new, unwrapped toys to be donated to the Harbor Interfaith Services. This was an evening that no one wanted to end. We come from all walks of life, some are retired, many still working, diverse ethnic backgrounds, power boaters, sailors, big boats, little boats, no boats. But we have so much in common we love the sea and we truly enjoy each other s company. Commodore George Miller and his wife Diane Jones create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all guests are welcome at any dinner meeting and on any cruise. Our hope is that for the many boaters in California Yacht Marina, Holiday Harbor, and the new Cabrillo Marina Way who would like to share their boating experiences with others who love boating, they will seriously consider joining Hurricane Gulch Yacht Club in Mark Your Calendars January 13 Installation Dinner at The Reef restaurant in Long Beach; 6pm January Rail/Sail Cruise hosted by Staff Commodore Jeff LaBarre 4
