2 Hello Everyone, Thank you Denise, Duwayne and Kerry for hosting such a wonderful meeting. It was so well organized with VIP parking and great table decorations made us feel like royalty. The William Tell House owner and staff made us feel so welcome. Denise did a great job introducing us to the people who prepared and delivered our meal. We were treated to a Country Style meal and the food was delicious. With the temperature being in the 90's inland, Tomales was such a welcomed site with temperatures in the high 70's. It was a perfect day, Thank you Denise, Duwayne and Kerry. Thank you to Arlis, Kerry and guest Liz De Kock for taking care of the raffle tickets sales at the meeting. Liz and her friend Pat are from Colorado and were visiting Brant and Arlis. We encourage members to bring guests. Way to go Brant and Arlis. Thank you to Pat and Jim for sharing their story about their red 1957 Thunderbird being filmed for an episode of "Wheelers and Dealers" and presenting a guest speaker Robert Hohe M.D. "Master Detailer". For more information see the Meeting Minutes. I presented a Non-CTCI member Survey Questionnaire at the meeting. The purpose of the questionnaire was to find out why some TOS members were not CTCI members. One reason became very evident when some questioned what is CTCI. As your President, I apologize for not making our newer members aware of CTCI. I had assumed everyone knew about the Classic Thunderbird Club International. You know what they say about "assume". CTCI is an International Club dedicated to the Thunderbirds headquartered in Southern California. The benefits of CTCI is a bimonthly award winning magazine called the Early Bird. CTCI members can buy technical manuals for their Thunderbirds such as carburetor, distributor, transmission, electrical and shop manuals to name a few. There are many more publications you can purchase. First start with their website which is: The Thunderbirds of Sonoma is Chapter #33 of the Classic Thunderbird Club International. I will be talking more about this at the next meeting. Our next meeting will be in Boyes Hot Springs at Mary's Pizza hosted by the Schulze family. Don't miss this meeting. What could be better than cruising in your Thunderbird through the Wine Country in October and eating Sonoma County's favorite Pizza. See you there. Happy Thunderbirding, Tim Roden, President CTCI #10159 BIRTHDAYS Sept: Dave Kibler = 14 Oct: Jim Arieta = 19 Nov: Terry Block = 11 ANNIVERSARIES Sept: None on record Oct: M & M McLucas= 10 Nov: Brant & Arlis Minetti= 6 Nov: Jim & Pat Arieta = 17 Note from the Editor: Cover Photo: This is our car after Robert totally detailed her with his Doctor Detail Solution. See page 10 for more information and pictures too. Good job Robert and Thank You. Reminder: Our November meeting is the elections of new officers for 2014, so be thinking about how you would be willing to support Thunderbirds of Sonoma as a club officer. Also, you must be a CTCI member to hold office, so if you haven t joined please see President Tim Roden or myself for additional information. January, 2015, will be here in a blink of an eye. So, as I hsd previously commented, I will be happy to mentor someone to take over the Newsletter Editor position. Apply early and beat the last minute rush. R.S.V.P. French phrase, "répondez, s'il vous plaît," which means "please reply."
3 Greetings to All, The September TOS meeting was hosted by Denise Bahnsen-Brown and Duwayne Bahnsen. Members caravanned to the William Tell Hotel and Restaurant in Tomales starting out at the Petaluma fairgrounds. It was a beautiful September day for a Tbird excursion. Lunch was fabulous with platters of fish & chips after generous shrimp louis salads and fresh warm sour dough french bread. Needless to say, it was one of our most delicious luncheons of the year. Attendees were: Denise Bahnsen-Brown, Duwayne Bahnsen and Kerry Mahoney, Terry Block & Andria Benner, Dennis & Dee Dee Byrne, Dolora DeGeer, Andy & Marla Preston, Tim & Diane Roden, Wes Crandall & Louise Johnson, Pat & Jim Arieta, Herman & Joan Schulze, Brant & Arlis Minetti, and special guests (from Colorado), Pat Whaley and Liz DeKock. We all were so happy that our beloved HARRY COSTA was also in the group. The lunch tables were decorated with sea shells, turquoise glass, and truffles for dessert! Denise is a resident of Tomales, residing at the late Herb Burbank's dairy ranch. She is well-known around town and hosted a terrific meeting. Denise introduced all of us to the chef, her friend & housemate who served us lunch, and the other employees/friends at the William Tell. It was an over-the-top event. Thank you Denise for your effort and creativity! President Tim Roden opened the meeting giving thanks to Duwayne for assisting with the parking of the Tbirds out in front of the restaurant. They looked "very cool" lined up in front of the old historic building. He also thanked Mike & Maryanne McLucas for taking on the minutes of August meeting in Dee Dee's absence. Pat & Jim Arieta introduced a special guest, Robert Hohe, also known as "Dr. Detail". Robert presented his auto detailing product to the group. He even did a demonstration and entirely detailed the Schulze's thunderbird. We're eager to help Robert promote this wonderful product! Pat Arieta shared their experience with their Thunderbird being filmed by Wheelers and Dealers (British television series produced by Attaboy TV for the Discovery Channel). It was a most interesting day for them. Dave & Jan Kibler were in Lake Tahoe so Tim gave the treasurer's report. We are doing just fine and look forward to the club assisting in payment of our annual Christmas party luncheon. It was voted that each member will pay $15.00 each for the Christmas dinner and the club will pick up the rest. Jim Arieta made the motion and it was seconded by Andy Preston. The next meeting will be held at the original Mary's Pizza Shack in Sonoma on October 5th. We will have our meeting in the back room. Dee Dee mentioned that she is President of the Santa Rosa Host Lions Club this year and perhaps our TOS could possibly help with a fundraiser in the future. Tim did a survey with the group about CTCI membership as to how many of us are members and talked about benefits of joining for those who are not yet members. The club raffle winners were Harry Costa, Diane Roden, Duwayne Bahnsen, Denise Bahnsen-Brown, Dolora DeGeer, and Louise Johnson. The raffle earned the club $52.00 for our treasury. Respectfully Submitted, Dee Dee Byrne Secretary CTCI # 10901

10 Robert Hohe M.D. Master Detailer Jim & Pat were so impressed with the outcome of their cars detailing that they invited Robert to our Sept meeting for a club demo. Robert generously provided a bottle of detailer as a raffle prize; Duwayne was the successful winner. Since Robert told us that this product was designed with the black car in mind, we re looking forward to seeing Duwayne s 57 Raven Black detailed. Below is Herman and Joan s 56 Thunderbird. The left picture is the before shot and the left is after detailing. Yes, I know lighting and angle can play tricks, but I was impressed with the final results. Thank you Robert for the Demo on our Bird, and yes, the results were dramatic. Several fellow Thunderbird enthusiasts went home with the product, including yours truly.
11 Tech Tip for Sept 2013 Scenario: Your Thunderbird was running fine when you drove it last week. But, when you started the engine today it was running real rough and blowing blue smoke out both tail pipes. After running the engine for only about 15 seconds, now the engine will not start. What is wrong? Diagnosing the problem included: Checking the ignition system, compression test, swapping out the coil and resistor. No problems found yet. When I pulled all 8 spark plugs during the compression test all of the plugs were gas fouled. Could it be a carburetor problem? I invited Dave Kibler and Herman Schulze over to help troubleshoot this problem. When they arrive I started the engine and is ran smooth and blew out some blue smoke and then cleared up. I drove the car about 20 miles with no problems. Problem solved? A couple of days later Dianne and I were going to take the T-Bird to Lake Sonoma. The engine ran rough again and blue smoke was coming out both tail pipes. I called Dave and Herman to let them know the problem returned. Problem solved: I got a call from both Dave and Herman later in the day suggesting the fuel pump diaphragm could have failed. Jan Kibler was the first to suggest this. I went out to the garage and sure enough the engine oil dip stick had the strong smell of fuel. I changed the oil last month and remember filling the oil to the full level. But, the level was much higher than full. That explains the gas in the oil and oil in the gas causing the blue smoke. Solution: Replace the fuel pump and change the oil and oil filter. It was suggested by Gil to purchase a new fuel pump made by Air Tex, Part Number Thank you to Dave and Jan Kibler, Herman Schulze and Gil Baumgartner. Another possible scenario: In my case the cause was the fuel pump. But, if the diaphragm failed in the Power Brake Booster that can have a similar symptom. The vacuum will pull brake fluid in to the carburetor. A test for the Power Brake Booster would be to block the vacuum line to the booster and run the engine. Tim Roden CTCI #10159 PS: Note from Editor Tim s first problem after a maiden voyage was that a newly rebuilt transmission had a very weak reverse at best. Removal out the bottom, repaired and reinstalled without removing the engine. This was a major hurdle to overcome. Now this second problem relates to newly rebuilt engine with only 800 miles and a new fuel pump. Tim was beginning to feel like Murphy had moved his entire family into the Roden Garage.
