September 2013 Volume 7, Issue 9 Event Calendar September Arroyo Grande Car Sho Corvette Club Santa Barbara Jim Purcell On Saturday July 27 th eighteen members set out on a caravan to the enchanting village of Arroyo Grande for the annual Arroyo Valley Car Show. As usual the drive up Highway 101 was scenic, and the weather was ideal. As it turned out our intended parking area was closed off, but the backup lot Ed Clerkin scoped out was even better. The main downtown area of Arroyo Grande was closed off to traffic, and was filled with hundreds of classic cars and vehicles of all types. The cars were neatly organized by vintage and pedigree and included the mid-50 s Chevys, the Muscle cars of the 60 s, the Classics of the 30 s & 40 s, and of course a wide variety of custom rods. There were fewer Corvettes than in past years, but the few there were gems. Arriving early gave us the opportunity to chat with the owners, take close up pictures, and avoid the throngs of visitors that began filling the streets in the afternoon. Fortunately, we had reserved the patio at Rooster Creek Tavern for lunch which was situated in the heart of the car show. It turned out to be a great spot not only for lunch but for watching the people that were watching the cars. After a long and leisurely lunch we all went our separate ways to enjoy the remainder of the afternoon before returning to Santa Barbara. Several members were spotted in Doc Bernstein s Ice Cream Shop as well as in the quaint pasty shops along the main street. Arroyo Grande is quite the little jewel on the Central Coast and is just one of the many in California that the Corvette Club of Santa Barbara has the good fortune to visit throughout the year. Be sure to join us on the next exciting road trip to an intriguing destination with the CCSB. 3rd General Meeting Santa Barbara 7th Nethercutt Auto Museum Sylmar 21st Kalyra Winery Stomp Santa Ynez October 1st General Meeting Santa Barbara 5th MB2 Carts Newbury Park 26th Halloween Party Summerland Editor and Publisher Fred Smith Publicity Meetings are 1st Tuesday of each month at 6:30PM. 2 Page 2 Volume 7, Issue 9 President s Message Jim Purcell For most of the country Labor Day marks the unofficial end of Summer. But for those of us fortunate to live along the Southern California coast, our Summer unofficially ends somewhere around Thanksgiving or Christmas then unofficially starts back up just after the New Year. Having all that sunshine and great weather just makes you want to get in your Vette and head off for some fun and excitement. And that s just what we do in the Corvette Club of Santa Barbara. August provided us a healthy dose of theatrical and cultural enrichment as we enjoyed an evening performance of Spamalot under the stars at the PCPA Theater in Solvang. Then came an afternoon tri-tip BBQ and play at the Circle Bar B guest ranch in the mountains above Refugio canyon. Coming up in September we have the run to the Nethercutt Museum in Sylmar and the Great Grape Stomp at the Kalyra Winery in Santa Ynez. Where else can you enjoy a couple of refined English comedies followed by an elegant museum experience, and then indulge in a raging Toga Party stomping bare foot in a vat of grapes with Lucy and Ethel? Of course we re sensitive to those other distractions that arise in the weeks and months after Labor Day college football, NFL football, MLB play-offs and the World Series OK, and Hockey for those whose Summer unofficially ends around the 4 th of July!! So we ll be sure to leave a little space on the Events Calendar so your big screen TV and easy chair don t feel abandoned on those upcoming Saturdays and Sundays they ve been waiting all year to share with you. Have a safe and relaxing Labor Day holiday and hope to see you all at one of our coming events. Membership Column Pat Bloom Our current membership is 75 with 67 Corvettes. Privacy Reminder Old Club Rosters should be shredded not just thrown in the trash when replaced. MEMBER HIGHLIGHTS: From Sharon Smith: Fred and I took the 2008 Corvette on a very special road trip this summer. We drove back to Dallas, Texas for the Mary Kay Cosmetics 50 th Anniversary celebration. Because of that milestone, I really wanted to do something special to recognize the wonderful opportunity that Mary Kay has given to women. I have been in Mary Kay for 37 years and although I have been recognized for my sales achievements in the past, I decided to challenge myself to move out of my comfort zone, do what I needed to do to reach my goal, and then do the and then some. Mary Kay has often said that it is the and then some that we do that makes a difference in where we go in our lives. My wonderful Mary Kay family of clients supported my efforts by their purchases and celebrated with me in spirit when it was announced that I was #4 in the Go Give Area Consultant Queen s Court of Personal Sales and #8 in the National Consultant Queen s Court of Personal Sales. Those achievements made the 50 th Anniversary all the more special and were a tribute to Mary Kay s desire for women to dream big and succeed. I received a beautiful ring to add to my Mary Kay bling collection. Continued on page 6

Page 3 Volume 7, Issue 9 Corvette Club Santa Barbara Activities Column Peter Mackins The Circle Bar B run was another great run for the Corvette Club Santa Barbara. Although the trip was not long, 13.5 miles, nor was it difficult, 10 miles north on 101, take exit 120 then turn right it was very well attended. We had thirty guests but due to the possible parking issues only 5 Corvette. The Circle Bar B did their very best to accommodate our cars with spaces on asphalt for all of the Vettes and many others. We arrived in plenty of time to relax and have a few drinks before lunch. The Circle Bar B provided an excellent barbecue that included salad, green beans with sundried tomatoes, mashed potatoes, chili, chicken, tri tip and bread. The only complaints heard was it was too much food. After lunch we headed down to the theater. If you have never been there it is not the typical theater you see in Los Angeles or New York, but after all you are on a ranch near Santa Barbara. That only adds to the ambiance and fun. After a short greeting and a bit of humor from Dave and Susie Couch, the show as on. It was light hearted comedy, The Fox in the Fairway. It centers around a golf tournament between two competing country clubs. Very funny with some twists and turns. To summarize it was a great outing matched only by the friends with whom we enjoyed the day. On another subject we have been receiving a number of great ideas for runs for next year. At Tuesday s meeting I ll have information about upcoming planning meeting. Everyone is welcome. Please bring your evaluations of the 2013 runs and your ideas for runs for 2014.

Page 4 Volume 7, Issue 9 Corvette Club Santa Barbara NCM Master Ambassador Frank LoMonaco We are flying high! As you all know our club decided to participate in the banner program at the National Corvette Museum. For the next year - until we arrive for the Corvette Caravan in September, our club banner will be prominently displayed in the parking lot at the Museum. Looking good! Kalyra Winery The Great Grape Stomp Tony & Paula Megowan On Saturday September 13, 2013 we will be heading to Kalyra Winery in Santa Ynez for The Great Grape Stomp, See ya at the Stomp! Everyone should have signed up and paid the winery by now. If you have not and wish to attend contact Evie Sweeney at ext 21 and ask her if there are still tickets available. If you are able to get tickets tell her you are with the Corvette Club. We will leave Timbers at 9:30AM which should put us at Kalyra at 10:30. The festivities will start at 11:00AM and run until 4:00PM. Bring your camera-- it will likely be your new Facebook profile pic. Wear your toga to bring things up to the next level-- you won't be the only one wearing one, we promise!

Page 5 WE ARE ON THE WEB Volume 7 Issue 9 Nethercutt Collection, Sylmar Tony & Paula Megowan We will leave the Carpinteria City Hall at 8:00 AM September 7, 2013 so we can be at Nethercutt by 9:30AM. We check in at 9:45 for a 10:00AM tour. We plan on leaving Nethercutt at 1:15 to 1:30PM for lunch at either El Chaparral ( same place we went to last time) or Gabby s Kitchen (also Mexican). September so I can give them a firm count. I still have room for 12 more people if there is anyone who wants to sign up. If you do want to sign up OR if you have signed up and cannot attend I need to know by the 1st of PCPA Spamalot Tony & Paula Megowan PCPA (Pacific Conservancy of the Performing Arts in case you re interested) is a favorite event for CCSB which the club has attended several times. The nice thing is that even if you attend consistently, you will always see something different. And this year s show was Definitely Different! In attendance were Tony and Paula Megowan, Fred and Anne Lopez, Paul Zemella, Fred Markley and Rustie Van Buren, Mike and Sandra Christenson, Bob and Ivy Aanderud, Gretchen Falvo, Raymond Tracy and Kathleen, Art and June Aldritt, Jim and Judy Purcell, and Dennis and Lynn Merenbach. We all met at Timbers and headed north up Hwy 101 to Buellton for dinner at Avant Tapas and Wine Bar. Avant has over 100 wines from over 24 wineries all under 1 roof. Tradition says that bar keepers in Spain would put a little plate of food atop ( tapa ) a patron s drink in order to reduce the effect of the alcohol. Each plate being just a little different from the others, which promoted sharing and conversation. So in keeping with tradition, we enjoyed good food, good conversation and even a little wine tasting for those of us who were interested. Then we headed to the Solvang Festival Theater to see Monty Python s Spamalot. Spamalot is a musical ripped off from the film Monty Python and The Holy Grail. It s based on the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and their quest for the Holy Grail. The play pokes fun at everyone and everything, even Broadway musicals. The play was cheeky, silly and all good fun. Two things to remember after seeing the play: Beware of cute fluffy white bunnies they may not always be what they seem. Always look on the bright side of life! Thanks to those of you who joined us!

Page 6 WE ARE ON THE WEB Volume 7 Issue 9 Member Highlights Pat Bloom (continued from page 2) After the seminar in Dallas we headed east to Orange, TX (almost to the Texas Louisiana border) to visit a high school friend of Fred s. Then we headed west to San Antonio and then north to the Texas Hill Country. If you have any family members who were in WWII or you have an interest in that part of history, or even if you don t, we heartily recommend that you visit the National Museum of the Pacific War in the German settlement of Fredericksburg, TX. It is amazing. It gave me a whole new understanding of the world in that period of our history. I had allotted 2 hours for our visit and we were there 4 ½ hours and we did not see everything. Then it was north to Parker, CO to visit family. We all went to the Denver Zoo while there and it was another jewel to see if you have the opportunity. Lots of time and money was spent to make this zoo a showplace. The animals had plenty of room to cruise around in their habitats and photo ops abounded everywhere. 7 Page 7 Volume 7, Issue 9 Corvette Club Santa Barbara Member Highlights Pat Bloom Not everyone gets a second chance in life but I sure did. A year ago to the day I went back to Alaska with my friend Inge waving at the Hospital in Fairbanks as we went on our two 1/2 week adventure. We saw everything I missed and much, much more. We started out flying to Barrow and putting our feet in the Arctic Ocean. One more thing off the bucket list. We went to Chena Hot Springs and had Appletini s in ice glasses. Denali Park where it was raining but the next day it was so clear we flew around a perfectly clear Mt. McKinley. We took a small plane to Brooks Lodge and saw bears, bears and more bears. We went fishing in Homer and caught Halibut and brought it home. Privacy Reminder Old Club Rosters should be shredded not just thrown in the trash when replaced. Credit for the included photography goes to the attendees of our events and regularly include: Roger Hoyt, Inge Stallings, Sandy Halverson, Sharon & Fred Smith, Jim Purcell, Fred Lopez & Ivy Aanderud We went to Glacier Bay and shook hands with Al Gore who was there hiking. Did I mention we found most of the breweries in Alaska? Well we did so much and had so much fun it s hard to put it in a few words. What a great trip it was. Sandy Halverson Member Highlights Pat Bloom (Sharon Smith continued from page 6) From Colorado we took I-70 to Green River, Utah. Just west of Green River we headed south and visited Capitol Reef National Park for the first time. Everyone talks about Zion, Bryce, Arches, etc., but Capitol Reef has amazing vistas and formations in its own right. From there we caught a corner of Zion and headed home. We had planned to spend the night in Mesquite, NV at The Peppermill Resort (more recently the Oasis) where the CCSB members had stayed in days of old. Much to our dismay our old haunt was in various stages of demolition. What does that say about our longevity when motels we stayed at our being torn down? So we stayed at a Holiday Inn on the hill and had great Mexican food at a local restaurant. From there it was a straight shot home and more photos to edit from our getaway. 10 Page 10 Volume 7, Issue 9 Corvette Club Santa Barbara Corvette headlight probe upgraded by feds on models Andrew Thurlow Automotive News August 27, :46 am ET -- UPDATED: 8/27/13 2:10 pm ET - new story U.S. auto safety regulators are upgrading an investigation into Chevrolet Corvettes after complaints that the headlights suddenly stopped working. In a filing on Friday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it would upgrade the investigation of 103,374 Corvettes to an engineering analysis after receiving 95 complaints and reports from consumers alleging that, after driving for five to 30 minutes, both low-beam headlights unexpectedly shut off. The regulators began a preliminary investigation in May after receiving 30 reports of the problem. The agency said it also has received four reports of the same problem in 2008 Corvettes. General Motors told the agency that "the loss of headlights is caused by a fractured low beam circuit wire in the underhood bussed electrical center, an electrical assembly that is similar to a fuse box. The UBEC is located in a high heat area near the engine, and the low beam circuit wire routing within the UBEC makes it susceptible to cyclical stress caused by thermal expansion." In one of the reports, a driver lost control of the vehicle after approaching a sharp curve at night, causing the car to dip off the road. In other complaints, drivers reported that the problem was intermittent and that the low-beam headlight use returned. There have been no reports of injuries or deaths related to the defect, NHTSA said. NHTSA generally performs an evaluation when consumer complaints or manufacturer service bulletins suggest there may be a safety defect. Based on the result of the engineering analysis, a vehicle might be recalled or the investigation might be closed without further action. GM said that it is cooperating with the investigation Read more: Editor s Note: I included the above information in case any of our members experience a sudden loss of headlights. With the above information in mind you are forewarned to quickly switch to high beams should a failure occur. Fred Smith
