1 August 2013 Volume 7, Issue 8 Fourth of July Parade & BBQ Corvette Club Santa Barbara Barbara LoMonaco As we have for many years now, our club participated in the Santa Barbara 4th of July parade. There were 71 entries this year - the parade keeps getting bigger and better. It was still just as much fun this time as it was the first time. The crowds loved us and gave an especially warm greeting to our own Uncle Sam, Roger Hoyt! I love the reaction I get when they see a female driving a Corvette! "Wow - it's a girl driving." I always give them a big wave and tell them that girls can drive and are good drivers too. The weather cooperated - it was not too hot, not too cool... it was just right. We lined up in a new spot this year and we actually got the news of where to stage the day before the parade - a first! With our cars all decorated, and led by Alan and Carol Emslie in their '61 beauty, we slowly paraded two by two down State Street before an enthusiastic crowd - engines roaring, horns honking and drivers and passengers waving. After the parade our large group proceeded to the home of Frank and Barbara LoMonaco for a traditional 4th of July BBQ. Many people parked their cars on the lawn in the backyard and it was fun to sit on the deck and look down at our beautiful cars while relaxing and eating. Frank made his famous Margaritas, a real crowd pleaser, and John, Frank and Barbara's son, was in charge of the grill. What a great job he did - we couldn't have done it without him. Thanks John! We had hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad and all of the fixings, and, of course... apple pie and ice cream for dessert. We spent the afternoon eating, sipping, and talking with friends. It was a great way to spend the day and celebrate the 4th of July. Thanks to all who participated. 2 Page 2 Volume 7, Issue 8 President s Message Jim Purcell Greetings fellow CCSB members. Well here we are almost half-way through Summer with many of us having returned from vacation while others are just getting ready to start their adventure. July marked yet another year that our club had a strong showing on State street in the annual Santa Barbara 4th of July Parade. Patriotic decorations adorned the colorful Corvettes that represented every generation from C1 through C6. We re all looking forward to seeing the first C7 in next year s parade. Any bets on who will be driving it??? As usual, Frank and Barbara LoMonaco hosted a fantastic post-parade Bar B Que, and yet again snookered their son John into being top chef. Great job John and fortunately for us your parents manage to rope you in every year. We didn t quite squeeze the 20 Vettes into the backyard as I had predicted, but we got at least a dozen with room to spare. Awesome sight!!! Summer isn t over yet and we have some fun activities coming as you will see later in this Newsletter. Just to whet your appetite we have a car show in Arroyo Grande, Spamalot in Solvang, a comedy play and tri-tip at the Circle Bar B Ranch, and I won t even mention what we have coming up in September but here s a hint: Toga Party comes to wine country. So don t sit around singing the Summer Time Blues come join us for some real Summer fun. Membership Column Our current membership is 75 with 67 Corvettes. Pat Bloom MEMBER HIGHLIGHTS: Several members enjoyed each other's company outside of the club this last month. Sandy Halverson and Inge Stallings went on an exciting adventure to Alaska and Pat Bloom and Rustie Van Buren spent the day and night at the MidState Fair and Tim McGraw concert. Find your grail PCPA - Monty Python's Spamalot Saturday August 10, 2013 Rude Frenchmen, cancan dancers, the Lady of the Lake and her Laker Girls, Killer rabbits, catapulting cows, and the somewhat odd Knights who say "ni" are just part of the adventures and dangers awaiting King Arthur and his knights of the very very very round table in their quest for the holy grail. Lovingly ripped off from the motion picture, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot is the fresh Broadway hit and irreverent parody of the Arthurian legend. Tickets for this event have already been purchased but if you are interested in attending, let us know and we ll see if any additional tickets are available. Our plan is to meet at Timbers parking lot at 4:45 PM and leave by 5:00 PM so that we arrive at Avant in Buellton by 5:45 PM for dinner. We plan to leave the restaurant by 7:10 PM and drive to the theatre in Solvang for the 8:00 PM performance. If you have any questions or want additional information, feel free to contact Tony & Paula at (805) or tmegowan@interlogics.net.

3 Page 3 Volume 7, Issue 8 Corvette Club Santa Barbara Activities Column Peter Mackins August brings about two theater events. The first will be the August 10 th run to Solvang to see the PCPA presentation of Spamalot. This is a very funny play I m sure all who are attending will enjoy. If you have signed up please make sure you have sent the reimbursement for your tickets to either Fred Lopez or Tony and Paula Megowan, who will be leading the run. Tony and Paula have 26 tickets on reserve so if you have not signed up it may be too late. Again the cost for the play is $33.50 per person. Dinner will be separate from the theater tickets. The second theater run will be Sunday, August 25 th for the Circle Bar B Dinner performance, The Fox on the Fairway. The cost is $40 per person for dinner and the show. Please send your reimbursement to either Fred Lopez or me. Dinner will be at 1:00 pm and the show beginning at 2:00 pm. There may still time to make additional reservations as I have not sent in the final count. My hat is off to Tony and Paula Megowan. In addition to leading the PCPA run they will also be leading the two runs in September. The first run will be on the 7 th and will be to the Nethercutt Auto Museum. The Nethercutt collection features rare collectible ranging from mechanical musical instruments and antique furniture to the true heart for the collection, over 250 American and European automobiles dating from 1898 to For more information visit their web site The second September event is the Kaylra Winery Stomp on the 21 st. Not for the club but for all of the Santa Ynez valley this event has become a raging favorite over the years. Here is your opportunity to reenact the classic episode of I Love Lucy with you in the title role of Lucille Ball up to your knees in grapes. Join in the fun of getting your feet wet, and seeing what all the fuss is really about. With a full buffet feast, wine reduction sauces made by Winemaker Mike Brown himself, live music by a killer band, dancing, hayrides through the vineyards (make sure your glass is full!), an outdoor Library Tasting hosted by Martin Brown in the production area, and, of course, flowing wine all afternoon... it's a fun-filled day you'll never forget! Up-coming event for October is the MB2 Carting run on the 26 th. These are swift little vehicles that will go from zero to 45 in about 4 seconds. Okay, for us with the he Z06 that may not be spectacular but we are not running those indoors on a tight little course. If you have not lead a run either lately or at all now is your opportunity. If you would like to lead this run please let me know. Please save the date and join us for this event. Arroyo Grande Car Sho Jim Purcell Come join us on Saturday July 27 th as we caravan up Highway 101 to the enchanting village of Arroyo Grande for the very popular Arroyo Valley Car Sho. The quaint downtown of AG will be closed off to traffic and will be filled with hundreds of cars of every type: Classic cars, Muscle cars, Hot Rods, Custom cars, Exotic cars, and of course, plenty of Corvettes. Ed Clerkin, our club member in AG, will be arranging special parking for us within a short walk to the show. We have reserved the patio at Rooster Creek Tavern for lunch ( There will be ample time before and after lunch for strolling around the exhibit, and visiting the many interesting shops throughout the village. We will meet up at 8:30am in Goleta at the 76 Service Station/Timbers Restaurant parking lot located at the Winchester Canyon Exit off Hwy 101N. Contact Jim Purcell if you are interested in participating in this fun day run. If you have signed up but your plans have changed let Jim know as he will need to provide a headcount to the restaurant.

4 Page 4 Volume 7, Issue 8 Corvette Club Santa Barbara NCM Master Ambassador Frank LoMonaco The National Corvette Museum is very important. As the ambassador I am the link between the Museum and our club. I find out what is going on at the Museum and with Corvettes and report that information back to you. Not all Corvette clubs have ambassadors. In order for a club to have an ambassador it must maintain a certain number of points yearly - 50 points per year, starting on July 1st and going to June 30th. In order to become a Master Ambassador a person needs to accumulate 200 points each year. Because of the support of you, our club members, I have maintained the status of Master Ambassador for many years now. I get points each time put something in our monthly newsletter. I get points for each raffle ticket I sell or that you buy through the Museum. That is why it is very important for you to let me know if you have purchased a ticket through the Museum. When some of our club members went to Monterey in May and attended the Museum sponsored races and the awards dinner, I got points. If you become a member of the Museum or renew your membership, I get points. Fred submits a copy of our monthly newsletter to the Museum - I get points. The banner that our club just purchased that will be flying high in the Museum parking lot for the next year - I get points for that. If club members visit the Museum I get points. We don't get too many points in that category since the Museum is so far away but next year, for the Caravan, I will get points for each club member who participates. I would like to encourage all club members to look into joining our Museum. Membership is reasonable and it is a worthwhile use of your money. Your membership is considered a donation and Museum members get a discount when buying things in the Museum store! So many thanks to all CCSB club members. I have just turned in my points sheet to the Museum. Thanks to your generosity and support, I again have attained the status of Master Ambassador. Kalyra Winery The Great Grape Stomp Tony & Paula Megowan On Saturday 9/21/13 we will be heading to Kalyra Winery in Santa Ynez for The Great Grape Stomp, which is a new event for our club this year. Along with unlimited wine, there will be a full buffet feast, live music, dancing, hayrides and of course an opportunity to jump into a wine barrel, get your feet wet and stomp on some grapes (just like Lucille Ball!). Our reservations have already been made, but if you haven t made a reservation and are interested in going, you can contact the winery to see if tickets are still available. The tickets are $50.00 and the phone number is (805) Ask for Evie at ext 21 and be sure to tell her you are with Corvette Club Santa Barbara as they are reserving tables for us. Also, please let us know if you decide to attend. The event is from 11:00 AM 4:00 PM and we will meet at Timbers parking lot at 9:45 AM, with a plan to leave at 10:00 AM. If you have any questions or want additional information, feel free to contact Tony & Paula at (805) or tmegowan@interlogics.net.

5 Page 5 WE ARE ON THE WEB Volume 7 Issue 8 Nethercutt Collection, Sylmar Tony & Paula Megowan The Nethercutt Collection features rare collectibles ranging from mechanical musical instruments and antique furniture to the true heart of the collection: over 250 American and European automobiles dating from 1898 to Founder J.B. Nethercutt spent a lifetime establishing this collection of historic importance. Unique to automobile museums, each car on display is attentively serviced and maintained to remain as drivable as when the vehicle originally rolled off the showroom floor. On view are various Pebble Beach Concours d Elegance winners and cars once owned by movie stars, royalty and other notable personalities. The entire collection is housed in two beautifully appointed exhibit facilities located just north of Los Angeles. Housed in the Museum is the Nethercutt Automotive Research Library and Archives, one of the world s top automotive research facilities. Just steps outside the Museum are a resplendently restored steam locomotive and railcar. Opened in 1971, The Nethercutt Collection is a not-for-profit educational institution and a resource for automobile enthusiasts, historians, students and scholars. Saturday, September 7, 10:00 AM (check-in 9:45). Signup will be at the August meeting or us at tmegowan@interlogics.net. We will plan lunch afterwards. More details will be forthcoming soon. If you have any questions or want additional information, feel free to contact Tony & Paula at (805) or tmegowan@interlogics.net.
