Enjoy the fabulous vistas as we traverse the Mulholland Highway and make our way down through Encinal Canyon to the Pacific Coast Highway into Malibu. Along the route we ll stop at the King Gillette Ranch Estate, home of the razor magnate King C. Gillette. One of the most stunning locales in the Santa Monica Mountains, the 588-acre King Gillette Ranch is situated in the heart of the Malibu Creek Watershed. We ll also plan to visit the Paramount Ranch where many western movies and TV shows were filmed. In 1927 Paramount Pictures acquired 2,400 acres for use as a "movie ranch." Well over a hundred movies were shot here; most of them Westerns. We plan to have lunch at the renowned Paradise Cove Beach Café in Malibu. Paradise Cove has been the featured location for many TV shows, movies and commercials for several decades including the many beachthemed movies of the 1960 s. After lunch we ll head back up to Santa Barbara along the scenic Pacific Coast Highway. Please contact Jim Purcell if you are interested in participating in this run. 29th Fillmore Railroad Editor and Publisher Fred Smith Publicity Meetings are 1st Tuesday of each month at 6:30PM. 2 Page 2 Volume 8, Issue 2 Corvette Club Santa Barbara President s Message Jim Purcell With the arrival of February I am reminded of the life changing impact the Corvette Club of Santa Barbara can have on one personally. In February of 1995 I was offered the opportunity by GM to relocate to the Milford Proving Ground in Michigan and become part of the Corvette engineering team that was developing the totally redesigned fifth generation Corvette. Six years later in February of 2001, my former GM unit, Delco Systems in Goleta, offered me the opportunity to return to Santa Barbara to help in the development of a new light armored vehicle for the Army known as Stryker. Less than two years later GM sold our parent division to General Dynamics who announced they would be shutting the Goleta facility down. In February of 2004 GM again offered me the opportunity to relocate back to the Milford Proving Ground to which I said YES (having 25 years invested with them). Later that same February we were preparing to go on what I believed would be our final run with the CCSB through the Santa Monica Mountains. I recall seeing on TV the cold and bitter weather they were experiencing in Michigan which we still remembered not so fondly. So there we were on a gorgeous sunny day in February with the top down on our 96 Collector Edition roadster following Paul Mariano and the CCSB through the back roads of the Santa Monica Mountains. This was my first time down the continuous hairpin turns and blind undulations of the infamous Decker Canyon trying to keep up with a bunch of crazy C5 drivers. I think I may have held my breath the entire way and I m pretty sure I never blinked once. We finally popped out on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu and pulled off on the shoulder to wait for the others to regroup. It was at that moment I threw my arms straight up into the air and let out a howl, and proclaimed at the top of my lungs, We re Staying!!!. Upon returning to work that Monday, with gratitude and appreciation, I notified GM that I would not be coming after all. That special run with the CCSB was the life changing event that had a profound impact on the direction my life would take from that day forward. After enjoying a year off in pre-retirement, a local company offered me a job in February of 2006 where I still work to this day. For every door that closes a window opens, and for me personally CCSB has opened many windows. Coincidentally, here we are in February and guess where we re going next week? Yep, Judy and I will be leading a run through the back roads of the Santa Monica Mountains this time along the Mulholland Highway and down Encinal Canyon to Malibu and Paradise Cove. A little more laid back than Decker Canyon but incredibly beautiful nonetheless. However being February, I wonder what life changing decisions get made this time. Come join us and find out. 5 Page 5 WE ARE ON THE WEB Volume 8 Issue 2 Membership Column Pat Bloom Our current membership is 78 with 68 Corvettes. MEMBERS HIGHLIGHTS Fred & Sharon Last month talked about turning their 2 car garage into a 3 car garage by making some major modifications and adding a 4 post lift to stack the 2 Corvettes. Here are a couple of pictures: Sandy Rubel Halverson How about New Years Eve in New York City? Could I find anyone as crazy as me that would want to do this? Hib said he will watch it on TV, but my girlfriend Leslie Henderson from Denver was ready to go. (We had done Las Vegas in 1992, so why not party in the big apple). Off we went leaving 80 degree weather with our first stop in Washington DC to see the Whitehouse Christmas Tree. Weather was in the 40 s. Then we took the train to New York City where the weather was cold, in the 30 s and an Arctic storm predicted soon. We stayed at the Casablanca Hotel right off Time Square which we had reservations for over a year. What a great place and the whole staff where just fantastic. All the reviews I read were true. At 6pm we stood outside our hotel and watched the ball being raised and letting us know there was 6 more hours to go. The Hotel put on a great party with 5 course meal at Tony s next store and did I mention an open bar? We drank Champagne all evening and then the hotel took its quests on the rooftop to watch the ball be lowered with the countdown to I could not believe we were there in person but with all the noise, lights and confetti it was a site not to be forgotten. We went down into Times Square afterwards and it was amazing how quickly it dispersed leaving a floor of confetti. We saw Jenny McCarthy and Donnie Wahlberg from Dick Clarks Rockin New Years Eve redo their kiss for the news media. We just walked around just taking it all in (The 2014 Corvette had a big billboard in Time Square) and then realized we better get some sleep this morning since in a few hours we were going to see the Harlem Gospel Choir and then go ice skating in The Rink at Rockefeller Center. What a great start to the New Year. We didn t have much time but some of the things we did see were the Rockettes Christmas Show, the 911 memorial (Beautiful tribute to all those who lost their lives We shall never forget them) 911 ground zero museum, good Morning America, Empire State building and the Rock and then we saw the Play Kinky Boots which won the 2013 Tony award. Very funny. Oh yah, lastly we saw snow. Lots of snow falling. Thank goodness for layers because it got down to 8 degrees and for someone from California that was way out of my element. We were one of the lucky ones and were able to fly out of Newark. Thousands of flights were delayed and cancelled. Ours was delayed 2 ½ hrs. with us on board, then they de iced the plane and off we went to sunny Goleta. We had a great trip and a big check mark off the bucket list.

6 Page 6 WE ARE ON THE WEB Volume 8 Issue 2 Super Bowl Party Two weeks ago Steve and Linda Petersen called our President and offered up their home for a Super Bowl Party today (Sunday February 2nd) and sure enough the club board came through ever ready for an excuse to get together for more fun and camaraderie. Depending on one s perspective it was either a great game or one of the worse Super Bowl Games ever. The Denver Bronco s were trounced by the Seattle Seahawks 43 to 8. The Petersen house certainly provided the perfect party layout and atmosphere not to mention enough food and dessert to feed an army. Those able to join in the fun were David Scherer, Chandra Wallar, Fred and Sharon Smith, Jim & Judy Purcell, Thore Edgren and Patty, Of course Steve and Linda Petersen, Tony & Paula Megowan, Hib & Sandy Halverson, Ray Tracy & Ursula, Paul Zemella, Gretchen Falvo & friend and Dennis and Lynne Merenbach. CLASSIFIEDS 1993 Ruby, 40th Anniversary Edition Corvette - 85,000 miles Recent Tires registration and Smog Headlights are stuck on High Beam. I think it is the turn signal wand. Runs great. Just drove it to Los Olivos recently. Light but obvious wear on driver side bolster. CD player does not work. Radio has audible pops on occasion, mainly when going over hard bumps. photos by Fred $10,000 Reply to joeystrange1@gmail.com or 818/ to reserve a showing

7 Page 7 Volume 8, Issue 2 Corvette Club Santa Barbara USS Iowa Run Peter Mackins Saturday, January 19 th was your typical beautiful day in paradise as members of the Corvette Club gathered in the parking lot of Carpinteria City Hall. At 8:30 we headed south to Camarillo then headed toward PCH and a leisurely drive to Santa Monica. Travel that morning was great. Along the way we passed numerous cyclists and surfers. Looking at the beautiful Pepperdine campus, the gorgeous estates and the blue Pacific made us all appreciate the beautiful world in which we live. Say nothing about the fact it is in the middle of winter and it s in the mid 70 s and people in the east and mid-west were enduring subzero temperatures. Hey, somebody has to live here. In route we were assured that the brand was still alive and well as we pasted a red C7 heading north and a white one parked outside a house in Santa Monica. Shortly thereafter we merged onto the 10 heading for the 405. It was a short ride along the 405 to San Pedro. As we pulled into the parking lot the USS Iowa came into view. It s hard to imagine something that big floats. Privacy Reminder Old Club Rosters should be shredded not just thrown in the trash when replaced. Credit for the included photography goes to the attendees of our events and regularly include: Roger Hoyt, Inge Stallings, Sandy Halverson, Sharon & Fred Smith, Jim Purcell, Fred Lopez, Ivy Aanderud & Paul Zemella We boarded and set out on our investigation of the ship. A number of formers sailors served as docents and graciously served as our guides. A couple of bits of information I found very interesting. In the 1940 s the USS Iowa cost slightly over $100 million to build. By today s standards that would translate to $1.8 billion. There are three turrets that house three sets of 16 inch guns. Each of these turrets with armament weigh as much as a WW II destroyer. The tour ended in the gift shop, not a very original idea, which lead to the exit. Adjacent to exit was an information billboard. Two of the statistics interesting to us were that the horse power of the Iowa was equal to the horsepower of 154 Corvettes, and that the fuel tanks hold the same amount of fuel as 129,100 Vettes. Shows you how one great American warship relates to the great American sports car. The end of the tours brought us up to our time for lunch. I had made reservations at a nice little Italian restaurant which was a short walk from the ship. Well, as most said to me when they finally reached the restaurant, a short walk is a relative term. I have to admit I underestimated a short walk. Everyone seemed to enjoy lunch although Hib had to wait so long for his manicotti I thought it had been brought directly from Italy. One had to admit the portions were more than ample. I think Lynne and Dennis left with food for the weekend. With the relaxing drive home another great Corvette Club Santa Barbara run came to a close. Thank you all who took part.
