1 April 2013 Volume 7, Issue 4 Petersen Auto Museum Corvette Club Santa Barbara Saturday, March 23 Art & June Aldritt, Jacques & Yuriko Bellesiles, Eric Gamson & Loren Chapman (his sister), Hib & Sandy Halverson, Frank & Barbara LoMonaco, John LoMonaco & Kirsten, Peter Mackins, Dennis & Lynne Merenbach, Jim & Judy Purcell, Ray & Mary Sue Seider, Fred & Sharon Smith, Bob & Inge Stallings, and Ray Tracy & Kathleen Blake enjoyed a visit to the Petersen Automotive Museum for the vault tour. On our special tour we were amazed by the wealth of information that was shared with us by our museum docents. They kept us moving along so we would have time to hear everything about the cars we were seeing, and also to keep us from lingering too long and too close to any of the unique automotive gems we were viewing. Security personnel made sure that we looked, but did not touch since in the vault there are no ropes or other barriers between man and machine. After the 90 minute tour we went upstairs to do a quick viewing of the special exhibits which included: Sixty years of Corvette, Fins Form Without Function, and Aerodynamics From Art to Science. Then it was a quick 5 minute drive or a 30 minute walk for those of us who left our wheels at the museum so we could return after lunch to finish our viewing of the exhibits. After a hearty lunch at Canter s Deli, the group dispersed for the day. Back at the museum Fred and I took several more photos upstairs. No photography was allowed in the vault. We seem to always be the last to leave and met up with Eric Gamson and his sister in the parking structure. They followed us home on a beautiful drive on Hwy 1 along the coast. See the article in this newsletter for an overview of the vault tour automobiles. photos by Inge Sharon Smith Event Calendar April 2nd General Meeting Santa Barbara 6th Willow Springs or Speedzone 20-21st Wine Run Paso Robles 27th Vintage Fashion Expo - Ladies Only May 7th General Meeting Santa Barbara 10-12th ALMS Monterey 18th Zip Line Santa Margarita Editor and Publisher Fred Smith Publicity Meetings are 1st Tuesday of each month at 6:30PM. 2 Page 2 Volume 7, Issue 4 President s Message Sharon Smith March was a very busy month for club events. We started the month with a fantastic run organized by Jim and Judy Purcell. First we toured the Warbirds Museum and Woodland Auto Display in Paso Robles and enjoyed a catered lunch. Then we traveled to Cambria for relaxation at Moonstone Beach in the afternoon, and a wonderful dining experience at the Sow s Ear in the evening. Thank you, Jim and Judy, for a great getaway. Next on the agenda was a Winos Gone Wild event that Fred and I unfortunately could not attend. Once again Tony and Paula Megowan brought the club lovers of the grape together for an afternoon of tasting and camaraderie at Thore Edgren s home. Thanks for hosting the group Thore. Our third event was the run to the Petersen Automotive Museum in LA for the vault tour. Fred and I had the pleasure of leading the group on this run. After viewing some mighty fine automobiles, we headed up Fairfax Ave. to Canter s Deli for a late lunch. March found us adding new members to our CCSB family. Bob and Ivy Aanderud joined at the March general meeting just in time to go on the Paso Robles run with us. Eric and Terry Gamson joined in late March and although Terry was unable to go with us, Eric and his sister Loren spent the day with us at the Petersen Automotive Museum. Welcome to our new members and we look forward to your participating in our club events on a regular basis. 5 Page 5 WE ARE ON THE WEB Volume 7 Issue 4 Estrella Warbirds Museum and Woodland Auto Display Jim Purcell Two dozen CCSB members and guests experienced an early St. Patrick s Day of sorts. The drive up Highway 101 through Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties seemed more like a drive through the lush green rolling hills of Ireland or Scotland. The club was on a trek to the Estrella Warbirds Museum and Woodland Auto Display in the heart of the Paso Robles wine region. Once again it was an awesome sight to see a long caravan of Corvettes cruising through such spectacular scenery. Upon our arrival at the museum we received an enthusiastic greeting photos by Inge from the Museum Coordinator, Jeanne Thiebaud. Jeanne has a special affinity for Corvettes having owned over thirty different ones including the legendary 1953 Corvette Serial Number #003. We were treated to a fervent history lesson by retired First Sergeant Gary Corippo which included some intriguing stories behind the many unique museum artifacts. It was a fascinating experience to be up close to those amazing old Warbirds like the F-4 Phantom, F-14 Tomcat, F- 16 Fighting Falcon, and the many other fighter and attack aircraft. There was photos by Sharon even an A-4 Skyhawk which bore the moniker of the aircraft carrier I served on, the USS Coral Sea. photos by Sharon For our racing enthusiasts we couldn t have asked for a better collection of Midget, Sprint, Modified and Indy racecars along with a diverse assortment of Street Rods and classic automobiles at the Woodland Auto Display. The icing on the cake was meeting and talking with Dick Woodland himself, owner of this remarkable collection of automotive history. Mr. Woodland was gracious and accommodating to the CCSB members, sharing stories and posing for pictures. After a satisfying catered lunch at the museum we were off on the next leg of our weekend adventure. The 25 mile drive across Highway 46 to the coastal village of Cambria was nothing short of spectacular. This stretch of road traversing the Santa Lucia Range to join up with the Pacific Coast Highway is certainly one of the most scenic drives in America especially at this time of year. Our destination was Moonstone Beach State Park which overlooks a rugged and magnificent coastline where the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean meet the quaint village of Cambria. The park was a perfect setting for our wine and cheese social, and a memorable venue for celebrating Bob and Ivy Aanderud s 30 th wedding anniversary. Fortunately, the White Water Inn was just across the road from the park so we were able to freely indulge in a variety of whites, reds and champagnes before resting up for the evening s festivities. Our evening was topped off with a fabulous dinner at the charming and cozy Sow s Ear restaurant in Cambria s East Village. The following morning the gang strolled up to Moonstone Beach Bar & Grill for brunch where the incredible views of the pounding surf are offered up at no extra charge. Afterwards everyone was on their own to explore the many quaint shops and galleries in the East and West villages before returning home to Santa Barbara. All in all, it turned out to be yet another spectacular photos by Inge weekend getaway for the Corvette Club Santa Barbara family. photos by Inge photos by Sharon

MEMBER HIGHLIGHTS SUBMITTED THIS MONTH: Privacy Reminder Old Club Rosters should be shredded not just thrown in the trash when replaced. Eric and Terry Gamson joined our club this month. They own a 2007 Z06. Eric was kind enough to highlight their lives and interests. " I just started a new job late last year after Terry and I moved back to SB just prior, from being in Goleta for many years. It is in the same area where I grew up, my being here since 1977 and graduating Santa Barbara High School in Terry came here after that from Colorado to go to college, and never went back after we married a few years later. I ve been involved in motorsports since before I got my license, both in motorcycles and cars; in various forms in a career and as a racer, in the past, and still now as a lifestyle/hobby. One of my main interests is computer Simulation Racing using an online PC game called iracing, with over 30k members, 55 international tracks and 30 real cars, all accurately laser scanned for the ultimate realism. I use a racing seat, steering wheel and pedals on 3 monitors and surround sound to complete the experience. Check out the Club website Terry is in the medical industry and is a dog lover, we have 3 pets, all named after real racers and our prior Pomeranian was named Senna!" - Pat Bloom had a great time at the NASCAR races in Las Vegas with son, Kevin, his wife, and firecracker grandson, all three big Earnhardt Jr. fans. They were able to get a lot of driver autographs and hi fives (all you have to do is hold up a 3 yr old calling out their names.) Josh knows many of the drivers, their numbers and cars so had a beaming smile when they acknowledged him. Dad was smiling too as Jr. signed his hat. For her birthday, Pat received a very tall flagpole that fits under the car tire to fly Tony Stewart's flag at the races. She shares her birthday with another grandson on St. Patrick's Day and this year it was an event at Kids World in Santa Barbara (we're all kids at heart!) 8 Page 8 Volume 7, Issue 4 Wino s Gone Wild - Battle Champagne Paula Megowan Could we have asked for nicer weather to sit on Thore s patio and sip champagne? No, it was a beautiful day. Could we have asked for a better selection of champagne to taste? No, we really had some good ones. Could we have asked for a better group of people to sit and sip champagne with? No, absolutely not. Could we have asked for the wisteria to have been more in bloom? Well, maybe OK, so 3 out of 4 ain t bad.. The cool and wet weather we had earlier in the week gave way to a beautiful, warm Southern California day as we enjoyed the delights of champagne and/or sparkling wine. Unfortunately, since the weather leading up to Sunday s activity had been cool, Thore s wisteria wasn t quite in full bloom, but it was a lovely day nonetheless. Joining Tony and I for the festivities were: Inge Stallings (who brought her own beer). Sandy Halverson, Wendel & Judy Hans, Jim, Judy and Katie Purcell, Barbara and Frank LoMonaco, Dennis and Lynne Merenbach, Bob and Ivy Aanderud, Gretchen Falvo, and of course Thore Edgren and his guest Patty Brown. We had a wide selection of bubbly beverages including a bottle of Dom Perignon thought to be one of the finer champagnes around. It didn t fare so well with our group, but we found others that satisfied our taste buds just fine. Some of the most popular were Blason at a cost of only $10 (but we re told there aren t any more available), Roderer Estate and Laeticia. After we were done tasting, we dined on pizza and Tony s homemade cookies and peanut clusters. Thanks for everyone for joining us and we look forward to seeing you in the fall. Cheer s!

9 Page 9 Volume 7, Issue 4 Petersen Auto Museum Vault Tour - Thanks to the research by Inge Stallings Petersen Automotive Museum to keep vault open; new chairman named, January 11, 2013 By WJ Hennigan; Tour guide Kevin Blackley talks about a trio of Ferraris to visitors touring Ever since the Petersen Automotive Museum opened the doors to its downstairs vault to the public, the institution has had a steady line of people trying to get in. For that reason, the museum said it will keep the vault open indefinitely. Petersen officials had previously planned to shut down the hour long tours Jan. 6. The Vault January 8, December 31, 2020: Originally scheduled to close January 6th, the Vault tours have been extended indefinitely. An additional ticket purchase of $25 is required and includes access to the Vault, as well as a guided tour by museum staff. To ensure a quality experience, tours will be intimate, no more than 20 people at a time. Vault tour guests must be over the age of 12. Tours are available at 11:00am and 3:00pm on weekdays, and at 11:00am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm and 5:00pm on weekends and holidays. Tours may be scheduled by calling or visiting the admissions desk. Examples of vehicles currently located in the Vault include the spectacular one-of-one 1925/34 Round Door Rolls-Royce Phantom I Aerodynamic Coupe, a Ferrari given to Henry Ford II by Enzo Ferrari, a rare Jaguar XKSS formerly owned by actor Steve McQueen, the Volkswagen Beetle driven by Lindsay Lohan in Herbie Fully Loaded and a 1939 Bugatti given to the Shah of Iran as a wedding present. A wide variety of hot rods, muscle cars, Hollywood vehicles, exotics, vehicles used by heads of state, motorcycles, and even a Popemobile are housed in the Vault. Tours will last over an hour and photography is not permitted. The exotic Round Door Rolls-Royce was delivered new in 1925 with a Hooper Cabriolet body to its first owner, a Mrs. Hugh Dillman of Detroit. It appears never to have left England and was re-sold when still virtually new to the Raja of Nanpara. In about 1934 a subsequent owner sent the car to Jonckheere of Belgium to be fitted with fashionably aerodynamic coachwork complete with twin sunroofs, round doors, a large fin, and a sloping radiator shell. Once thought to have been owned by the Duke of Windsor, the concours-winning car then passed through the hands of several other owners before being discovered in New Jersey in the early-1950s in near derelict condition. Max Obie later acquired the unusual Rolls-Royce, had it painted gold, and charged curious individuals one dollar to enter a special enclosure to look at the car. The Phantom I then spent time on the East Coast of the United States and in Japan before coming into the possession of the Petersen Automotive Museum in the spring of 2001.

10 Page 10 Volume 7, Issue 4 Petersen Auto Museum Vault Tour - Thanks to the research by Inge Stallings 1953 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe by Ghia ~ They don t make em like they used to ~ The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles has many amazing cars. On my last trip there I saw this unfamiliar-looking Cadillac. One reason it looked unfamiliar is because it is one of only two made. Although increasingly uncommon at the time, in 1953 it was still possible to export an American car s chassis and have a body made by someone else fitted to it. So allow me to explain the connection between the aforementioned elements of this post. In 1949, following a bitter divorce from Orson Wells, box-office sensation Rita Hayworth married her third husband, Prince Ali Salman Aga Khan, in France. Prince Aly Khan, as he was more often referred to, was the son and heir apparent of Aga Khan III, the head of the Ismaili Muslims. (Incidentally, Prince Aly ultimately didn t inherit the title from his father; it was the first time in the sect s 1,300-year history that a son was overlooked. It was actually Prince Aly s son, the grandson, that inherited the title.) In any event, according to Petersen Automotive Museum, Prince Aly Khan was the world s wealthiest man alive at the time of his marriage to Mrs. Hayworth. Before the end of 1951, Mrs. Hayworth filed for divorce. Unfortunately, the divorce, granted in the US, was not recognized by France, so it dragged out several years. During that time, there was bit of a feud over the custody and upbringing of their daughter, Yasmin Aga Khan. Prince Aly Khan was determined to gain custody of Yasmin. So determined, in fact, he offered Mrs. Hayworth $1,000,000; a proposition which she declined. This is where the car and Turin, Italy come in, but things get a little less certain. I couldn t track down when it happened, but Prince Aly Khan apparently gave this custom coach-built 1953 Cadillac to Mrs. Hayworth as a gift. My guess is it could have been an appeal to his ex-wife for his daughter. Unfortunately for both the prince and the actress, that wouldn t be the last round at failed relationships. However, the car remains. I can tell you that it looked incredible in person. Despite my passion for historic Cadillac designs, this body by Ghia (from Turin, Italy), looks way ahead of its time when compared to what the wreath and crest was building en masse in Take a look at some of the larger shots in the gallery and see what I mean. The design, both inside and out, looks quite sophisticated. I wasn t able to locate any information on it s mechanicals (I will be contacting Petersens curator), but I am assuming it to be identical to what a Series 62 came with that same year. From what I can tell, that would make the engine a 331-cubic-inch V-8 which produced roughly 210 HP. Editor s note: the above just touches the surface of the tour. Our guide spoke non stop for an hour and a half describing in extreme detail what we were viewing. If you missed this run you will not be disappointed if decide to attend on your own.

11 Page 11 Volume 7, Issue 4 Petersen Auto Museum Vault Tour - Thanks to the research by Inge Stallings The Petersen Automotive Museum ~ The two unique features that separate the Petersen Automotive Museum from other automotive museums are the Streetscape diorama, and the rotating exhibit spaces. To keep The Museum fresh, relevant, and to keep visitors coming back, it was decided from the beginning not to display the entire Museum Collection at once. In the 300,000 square feet that comprise The Petersen Automotive Museum, only about 150 vehicles are on display at any one time. The other half of the 300+ vehicle collection is in on-site storage, awaiting the chance to go on exhibition. Depending on the chosen subject, the rotating exhibits can range from 100% Petersen vehicles to 90% on loan. A large part of The Museum's focus is to collect and preserve historic vehicles, and a great deal of importance was placed from day one on acquiring a great number of significant vehicles of all shapes, sizes, makes, models, and purposes. As the Museum's popularity grew as a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit educational institution, people came to realize that it was the perfect tax deductible home for their prized possession. Our first donation was a beautifully restored 1952 Mercedes-Benz 300 Cabriolet from Annapolis, Maryland. Since then, we have taken in donations from all over the world varying greatly from single vehicles, to multiple vehicle collections, rare automobile components, artwork, photographs, books, and automobilia. Our education programs are built around the curriculum of the California educational system, making The Petersen an excellent place to take children on a field trip. Our free bus program ensures that children that come from disadvantage schools can still visit The Museum. We educate people of all ages. From monthly Discovery Days in our Discovery Center, to Teacher Salary Point Workshops, to a full complement of very knowledgeable docents who volunteer their time every day to help educate visitors, we do our best to make sure that everyone who leaves The Petersen Automotive Museum learns something. Since its inception, the Petersen Automotive Museum has been regarded as the focus of automotive enthusiasm on the West Coast. Our participation in local, national, and even international events has allowed us to reach out to those who might otherwise not have been aware of what we have to offer. Our outreach extends to the internet and beyond. Museum History ~ If there is one thing that we all have in common, especially in Southern California, it s the automobile. To some the automobile is an appliance, but to us it is a passion. The Petersen Automotive Museum has been celebrating this passion since 1994 on the corner of Fairfax Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard, the third most travelled intersection in the city of Los Angeles. It anchors one end of the famed "Miracle Mile" created by real estate developer A.W. Ross in Created in a time before shopping malls, the Miracle Mile centralized shopping in the area and was "The" place to go for high end shopping. Wilshire was also home to various "firsts" including dedicated left-turn lanes and the first timed traffic lights in the United States. Ross also required merchants to provide automobile parking lots behind their stores, all to aid traffic flow. The Museum's unforgettable architecture by world renowned architect, Welton Becket was cutting edge when the building was opened in 1962 as Seibu, a Japanese department store. When Seibu left the United States in 1965, Ohrbach's moved into the building and it became a popular local shopping spot until its closing in The building stood vacant for approximately 6 years until inspiration struck Robert E. Petersen, who was looking for a consolidated headquarters for Petersen Publishing. Upon further investigation, he decided that the near-windowless structure would not be the best choice for an office building, but it would make an excellent museum. To preserve the Museum's artifacts inside, they need to keep away from the sun's damaging ultraviolet rays. Seeing the building's true potential as an automotive-inspired educational institution, Mr. and Mrs. Petersen put forth a large portion of the money necessary to create the Petersen Automotive Museum. The Museum was to be much more than a large room filled with cars parked in rows like an indoor parking lot. From the beginning, the vehicles chosen for exhibition had to be displayed in context to give them real meaning and a better experience for all who would come to visit. The now-famous "Streetscape" would be full of architectural elements that would be period correct for the vehicles that would surround them, immersing visitors deep into the stories that are told. Even the second floor rotating exhibit areas would have themed exhibits so that the vehicles on display would tell their story in a comprehensive yet creative manner. A third floor would feature a Discovery Center which would teach art and science through the automobile to children of all ages. The Museum was developed in a mere three years and opened on June 11th, 1994.
