You re either here or on your way back to the Old Pueblo I hope, for some fall/winter driving fun. I ll be here to provide the venues, so make your plans now so you don t miss a single mile or cheap breakfast. Unless I hear feedback with suggestions, we re still motoring on the 2 nd Saturday, 4 th Saturday and 1 st Wednesday every month. As 2018 rolls to a close, I d like to give the members some feedback on this year s events and see if maybe TBCR is changing. Across the board, attendance at all our events is down. Those who participate are still avid drivers, maintainers and enthusiastic. However, many members seem to use the events as a way to simply meet for a meal with the group. Why? What is the essence of our hobby? Not sure. Yes, some of our cars are off the road, fragile or too uncomfortable, but hey, if you can drive your luxo-barge (or SUV) to breakfast, why not follow the group of British cars and enjoy the drive there as a group. Think about it We ll begin the last two months of 2018 with some nice drives. Because my schedule has been in flux this year, I ve asked for volunteers to help with beginning the drives and making sure that we get to our end point. Thanks mostly to Ron Furtak these events continue. So, Wednesday November 7, is the BLAT to lunch at Tucson McGraw s on Houghton Rd. If you can volunteer to lead the group out of Tucson at 10:30 AM, contact me and I ll provide you with maps and directions for the group. The 2 nd Saturday Breakfast Run on November 10 begins at Park Place Mall, heads to Green Valley and gets you to breakfast at quirky Tania s on Grande. Ron has already volunteered to lead the group, so make your plans and be at Park Place Mall before we leave at 7:30 AM (yes, 7:30 AM for fall/winter breakfast drives). Next, set your sights on our annual post-thanksgiving event Hot Dog Run. TBCR coordinates its annual election meeting and pay your dues event for Saturday, November 24. Lunch is provided by TBCR on the SE corner of Alvernon Way and Lee St at our favorite Sonoran Hot Dog Cart. You ll bring your payment for 2019 dues, elect the Board of TBCR, learn who will be in the activity positions for 2019 and get that Tucson treat. Make plans now, so you don t miss this event. Following tradition the drive will begin at Mission San Xavier at 11:00 AM and end at lunch about 12:30 PM. Watch for the map/directions and other reminders at the date nears. Lastly, December will have its breakfast run, BLAT and annual Holiday Party. Watch the newsletter and my s for details. Start now to get that British car you so love, back on the road with you friends with similar passions. That s what this is all about. Enjoy the weather, enjoy the drive and see you on the road.

The weather was perfect with blue skies, light wind, a few clouds and no rain. Our TBCR turn-out was (by far) the largest of any club and we were rewarded with a reserved area mid-field that really showed off our beautiful cars while making it convenient to gather in the shade of the two gazebos on offer. Top honors among the British cars went to Steve & Nancy Hosmer and their 1957 Jaguar XK140 (see page 5). Their lovely light blue OTS had strong competition as many of the cars in the British class were well-prepped in their 'Saturday best' for the show. For this show we also introduced a trophy entitled 'The Spirit of Britain Award'. The awardee was selected by TBCR board members entered in the show, no criteria was specified, but rather a matter of 'we'll know it when we see it'. The award (a trophy version of the largest spark plug imaginable) went to Jeff Fleming who drove his 1952 MGTD to the show from Stanfield, Arizona. Google it and imagine driving I-10 with its 85 mph traffic in a TD (See Jeff on page 5). The show was also the debut of our new-to-us gazebo donated by Steve Pancoast and his HOA (see below). It is no minor task getting a 10x12 tent, poles, many weights and cinder blocks to the show in little cars but Dave, Pete and Ron made it work. Kim Wolfarth also brought a 10x10 tent (and cinder blocks) in his Spitfire - all he had to do was remove everything else including the spare tire. Cookies and pastries were provided by our first lady (Kathleen) and sustained us until the beer tent opened. Car shows are also a great place to recruit new members and a lot of that was going on all day long. Expect to meet several new TBCR members who were drawn in by the cars and people in our group. Finally, I want to thank Kandie & Kathy of the Rotary Club of Tucson for elevating the presence of TBCR and setting us up with a great display of cars. For many years our club has lacked a really solid Fall car show (ever since the old Casa de los Niños event shut down). I think we now have what we need with the Rotary show.
