Contact me at rosemary4medinaohc@gmail.com or or Your loyal merchandise vendor, Rosemary Young Dec 12 th Notice from the North Chagrin Reservation Manager and Cuyahoga Chapter OHC Cleveland Metroparks has decided to move forward with removal of the northern leg Oxbow Lane. This is the section that leads to the Horse Trailer Parking Lot. Their plan is to create a large Horse Trailer parking area in the turf/road area of Oxbow Lane just below the current lot. The work is scheduled to begin late this week and will run for several weeks. The current lot will be available for approximately the next 2 weeks and then the lot will be inaccessible until the project is completed in late January. I will keep you updated as I learn more. You will be able to park at Squires Castle lot if you plan to ride North Chagrin Reservation. This is just north of the original horse trailer parking area along Chagrin River Rd. The new lot should make parking easier for us. Thank you Brad and Cleveland Metroparks! THANK YOU TO THE BUSINESSES THAT DONATED TO OUR STATE RIDE LEATHER REPAIR & HORSESHOE ART Jack Weese H C Jack4ohc@att.net

4 MEDINA OHC TRAIL PARTY REPORT NOVEMBER 17, 2018 On this day, seven of our Superstars showed up on a fine morning. Mother Nature did not rain on us. The project was to make repairs to the area of Perkins beginning on the trail as it begins at the area near the now closed road near Covered Bridge. Joining with us were about 16 volunteers who are with the Trails Council. This group takes care of all the trails in the Park, and once a year joins our group to help out on the equestrian trails. On the preceding Tuesday, Dave Daams and Mike Kosmyna of the Trails Council joined Patricia Vance to scout the project. As a result it was determined that the most effective project would be to repair areas where rock that had been set at various places on the hill and on up had moved, and to reopen drainages that had been closed up by Mother Nature. On this part, from our group were Raydeen Ryden, Samuel Ryden, Rosemary Young, Carol Himmelright, Mike Andrea, Wayne Crouse and Patricia Vance. Mike took his backpack leaf blower and did leaves from bottom of hill and a long way up the trail. Wayne and Carol took leaf blowers and accomplished clearing a good many leaves on Riding Run Trail. The rest of our group made repairs along with Trails Council folks on the issues on the hill and up from there. Around 12:30 our club caterer, Karen Knuth arrived with pizza fresh out of the oven, delicious pastries and bread, as well as cookies and hot coffee and hot cocoa. After all had enjoyed the lunch, some of the Trails Council folks went back up to finish the projects that were started. Patricia and Rosemary set our clubs tools on Patricia s truck and took them back to the shed the Park gives us to use for this purpose. A job well done and a good time for all! Our volunteers have again accomplished an impressive amount of quality repairs to our Equestrian Trails. Our volunteers for sure are superstars! We know how to do this. We know which way water runs downhill!!!! The best part is everyone has a great time! So, in 2019 make a note to yourself, and join with and become one of these awesome volunteers! Patricia Vance for the trail committee: Mike Andrea; Jack Weese; Patricia Vance

5 TRAIL AND SADDLE HOUR REPORTING (again) As a member of the equestrian community, reporting these hours is one of the most important things you can do to help preserve riding for the future. It s time to start thinking about filling out your reporting form. Both hours on the trail and hours in the saddle can be reported. Although the deadline for reporting is not until January, 2019, now is a good time to start completing your form. A copy of the form is in this newsletter. If you prefer to use an Excel version of the form, you can find one on the OHC website ohconline.com, or access one from the that came with this newsletter. In addition to awards presented by OHC, reporting your miles lets legislators and park systems throughout the State know which trails are utilized and the extent of equestrian activities in Ohio. In the face of growing demands for new trails for other purposes, we need to make sure key decision makers understand how important these trails are to us. The completed forms need to be submitted to Medina OHC by the middle of January. Send your completed forms to Dianna Weaver. Her contact information is on the reporting form. On their website, the Ohio Horseman s Council provides the following informaion to help when completing the form. How to Calculate Mileage Unfortunately horses don t come with odometer, so to determne miles ridden you will have to estimate. The best way to obtain an estimate is to ride your horse on several types of trails where you can accurately assess the number of miles ridden. Keep track of the time that it takes you to ride this distance (do not include breaks and the time it may take you to get your horse to cross the water obstacle!). This should help you get a pretty good estimate of your MPH (miles per hour). Most seasoned trail riders estimate MPH at 2.5 to 5 miles per hour depending on the gait ridden. The typical horse walks at 3-4 MPH, trots at 8-10 MPH and lopes at MPH. Find a good mile stretch of area that you can practice and estimate your horse s MPH. continued next page Saddle Hours There are three primary categories for saddle hour reporting Competing, Schooling and Pleasure Driving. 1. Competing: Keep track of any hours that you spend in the saddle competing. This may be at any type of show or competition, Breed shows, open shows, ranch horse competitions, extreme cowboy races etc. are all examples of what would fall into this category. 2. Schooling: Many of us work daily with our horses to continuously improve their performance or to keep them (and us!) in shape. This category would include clinics, lessons and working in your home arena. 3. Pleasure Driving: This category is for members who enjoy their horses from a cart or rig. Hours spent driving for pleasure -- whether schooling, competing, parades or just enjoying the trail.
