1 Buick Club of America Portland Area Chapter Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Newsletter for November 2018 Director s Notes Random Thoughts and Musings Well it is end of the line for our Buicks for the year. The black convertible is in the shop for a repaint and body repair and the blue GS California went into storage for the winter yesterday. I will have to get my Buick fix seeing Buicks on the road for a while. It is the time of year when we need to vote for chapter officers for The ballot just came out via so be sure to respond and get your vote counted. It is also the time of year when you need to renew your chapter membership by paying your dues for Please bring your $15 (cheap at twice the price) to the meeting on Wednesday Nov. 28 th or mail it into the chapter P.O. box. See the renewal form near the end of this newsletter. Brenda, Sparky and I will be heading out in early December for an RV excursion to California and Arizona. We of course plan to see friends and chapter members during our time away so we will leave you in the capable hands of Fred, Jack W., Ken and Bob for a few months. We will change venues for the November meeting to Old Chicago Pizza at SE Washington St. Portland. Start time will be 6:30PM. Come out to see who your chapter officers will be in We will also discuss events and dates for So come and give your input. There will be no meeting in December as everyone has plenty of things on their calendars without having a Buick meeting. I believe there will be January and February get-togethers and I will be back in time for the March meeting so it will happen for sure. Look elsewhere in this issue for an article and pictures on our late October event, I know I had a great time. This is just one of the fun things we do as a chapter / group of friends. Come join us next year for more. Speaking of joining. We have had some new Buick people join our chapter in the last few months: Tim and Cathy O Dore from Vancouver with a 1964 and a 1999 Riviera Andrew Coleman from the LA area with a 1937 Model 40C Ben Levy from Vancouver with a 1962 Special Deluxe convertible and a 1973 Electra Limited Jeff and Madeline Taylor from Corvallis with a 1978 Skylark and a 1990 Reatta convertible Dennis and Michele LeFief from West Linn with a 1948 Roadmaster convertible.
2 October 27 th Fall Tour By Jack Gerstkemper Sunny skies greeted us on Saturday morning for our October 27, Halloween tour. We gathered at the Weston Buick- Kia-GMC dealership at 10:00 AM, an entirely respectable hour for a late October tour. Jan Weston greeted us with donuts and coffee set on tables in the center of his showroom. The stars of the Weston showroom were three new Regal TourX station wagons in black, silver and charcoal grey. The stars of the parking lot were the collector Buicks with their costumed owners. Jan cleared the front row of his parking lot along Stark Street for our Buicks. We spent an hour at the Weston dealership admiring the Buicks, comparing Halloween costumes, and devouring donuts. Then we left for a driving tour around Gresham, Fairview and Troutdale. The fall colors on the driving tour were outstanding. The clear blue sky held a few wispy clouds. The sun was warm. The winds were light. We couldn t have asked for a nicer fall day. We meandered north from Weston s to the Columbia River for a photo stop. Then we meandered east on Marine Drive to Troutdale. A slow drive up the Sandy River on the Historic Columbia Gorge Hwy brought more fall colors. A driving quiz forced a sharp lookout for interesting roadside details. The Amazon Distribution Center on the north side of the Troutdale Airport was impossible to miss. Amazon s large white building is as big as the airport and was surrounded by a bajillion empty trailers waiting to be loaded. Lunch at Bumpers Grill in Fairview included prizes for all participants. Hit man Hadlow won the prize for the best costume, packing a violin case in his black 39 mob-mobile. Jack and Barbara G. won for best couple dressed as 60 s era hippies in their 65 Riviera. Ken Schutt wore his Vietnam era Navy flight jacket while driving his 1956 Buick. Jerry Taylor drove up from Corvallis in his recently purchased bright red Reatta convertible adorned from head-to-toe in OSU Beaver gear. Jerry s costume brought luck to the Beavers. They won Saturday afternoon in Colorado, doubling their 2018 win total to an impressive 2-7 record for the season. Along the way we stopped at a car collection whose owner prefers to remain unpublicized. But here s a few characters who don t object to a little publicity. Have you ever seen a more distinguished group of old car enthusiasts?
