1 PRESIDENTS CORNER February 2015 Resolutions, it s a new year with some familiar goals, lose weight, stop smoking, stop drinking, more walking in the neighborhood so on and so on. We all have limitations especially as we get older. Knowing what we can get away with, improves our odds. When we pan for gold, we improve our odds by not panning all the material but dig down and pan the several inches just above the bedrock. You re improving the amount of quality pans that have gold, adding to your take. So it is with a metal detector, you are not going to find gold if you are hunting on a gravel bar that is 3 or more feet deep. Looking for bedrock that is exposed or that is close to the surface improves your take. Know your limitations, I have heard of several people finding rich pockets of gold, but the question is, did they get it all? Unless you are digging down to identify the depth of the bedrock, no. Bedrock is rarely flat with deep crevices and low areas where gold settles out. You'll learn a lot after finding a nugget, and digging it up. Was the nugget on bedrock? If not how deep is the bedrock? Finding more gold and going out looking as a resolution provides great exercise, reduces stress, and brings a greater peace of mind. Increase your gold take this year by first working areas known to have good gold. Increase your take by getting down where the gold is either by digging or chasing the bedrock around. Bring your finds to the meetings, whether its gold or coins. We all enjoy sharing your triumphs and you might share some knowledge that could help others find more gold. Watching football and looking forward to being out hunting for the yellow stuff Going for the Gold, Mike Mark Your Calendars, It s Almost Bear River Time!! Bear River Outing April 23-April Make sure your Application/Disclaimers and dues are up to date so you can join us at this fun-filled outing! If you have a questions, feel free to contact me at , or me at: cyned0523@yahoo.com Just want to remind everyone that our Goldhounds Members Only outing at Bear River is in April this year.

2 April 23, 2015 you can enter the gate at 1:00 pm, to April 27, 2015, must be out of the campground by 10:00 am. Camping is on a first come first serve basis. Until the campground is full. This is the same Group campground that we use at the Bear River. Instructions on how to get there are at the end of this message, if you need directions. Please direct any further questions to our Outings Coordinator Robert Jordan, at robster132@gmail.com. Since this is a club event, No early entry into the campground before 1:00pm on Thursday, April 23, There will be a sign-in area when you come into the camping area. We ask that you sign in immediately on entering and before setting up camp. There will be someone at the sign-in area, if not, please sign in anyway. This outing is for Members Only. You are welcome to come in for the day or stay as many nights as you wish every day and night, or anything in between. The campground is ours completely. It will not be used by others. There will be a lock on the gate, with a combination setting of This is a simple tumbler lock where you set each number and then open the lock. When you re-lock it, turn some of the tumblers of the combination. This is the same for each of the past few years. It s important for you to re-lock the gate after every entrance and exit, and make sure the lock is through the Placer County lock. That way they can get in and out without a problem if they need to. We ll have a potluck dinner on Saturday evening starting at 5:00PM, and you all know we start on time! Bring a dish to share for eight (8) people. So be prepared and have your food ready and on the table by no later than 4:45 PM. Sunday morning will be the 18 th Annual Potluck Breakfast, starting at 8:00 am. You don t want to miss this either. Be sure to bring juice, rolls, or other breakfast goodies for others to share. Regarding mining and prospecting equipment: Non-motorized within the park area, meaning motorized equipment of ANY kind is not allowed. Not even solar powered mining equipment. We can run motorized equipment below the park area where we always do (no dredging of course). This means we can power sluice. The one requirement for power sluicing is that the water and tailings from the sluice cannot run back into the water. Either it gets dissipated by a holding dam or by running back into the bench gravels and disappearing. Normal hand sluicing is permitted within the park area so don t be concerned about that. The lower boundaries will be flagged so you ll know where you can power sluice. Detecting, sluicing, sniping, and panning are permitted in the park area and outside as well. There are no restrictions here. At this moment campfires are not permitted. This may change before the outing. We generally are permitted to have a group campfire. The facility consists of pit toilets, picnic tables and river access. You may park along the road but not on the bench area itself. Bring plenty of drinking water, chairs, extra tables and pop-ups if you have them. The weather is always subject to change at this time of year. Be prepared! The Bear River Campground is only on the park side of the river where we camp. The opposite bank is

3 private land so please keep that in mind. This is a super outing for us and we ll likely have 90 or more people. When parking your rig, tent, etc., it is important to conserve space. We ll likely have someone directing parking. Directions From Auburn, take Hwy 80 toward Reno. About 10 minutes past Auburn, exit on West Weimar Crossroads. Turn left over the freeway, (North) for 1.5 miles. Turn right on Placer Hills Road, to Plum Tree Road (2.5 miles). Turn left on Plum Tree Road to the Bear River Park/Campground. The Parking lot is on the left at the bottom of the hill, turn left into the parking lot, then bear left toward the Green Gate (combo 7-7-7). Be sure to lock the gate back when you come in or leave. The private Group campground is about one mile after you go through the Green Gate. There is another way through Colfax, if you know it. It s a good way to go as well. For those coming the first time, use the instructions above, not through Colfax. Thanks. Any other information will be sent out as we get closer to the outing and will be in the March newsletter or our mass service. So watch your s and March newsletter for it! Thank You, Cyndy Burchard Cyndy s Meeting Notes Mike started our January meeting talking about how he, his brother and Dad would find gold that was embedded in stones and would need to be removed. There are many different ways to do this. And Mike knows many of them. Including ways not to do it! January s Miner of the Month coins went to Tim Boughton and Greg Rhoades. A special coin was donated to Mike, and he gave this special coin to Don Robinson. The nugget for the person that traveled the farthest this month went to a guest that traveled all the way from Arizona! Congratulations to all of you! We didn t have anyone at the meeting that had remembered to bring their camera, so unfortunately there aren t any pictures. But it was a great meeting, and we had a lot of items on the table for the raffle. Once again, the NUGGETS will be teaching panning at the Presidents Day Celebration. The date is February 16, 2015, at Mt. Vernon Memorial Park, 8201 Greenback Lane, Fair Oaks, CA, from 10AM to 2pm, RAIN OR SHINE. You are welcome to come help us teach our heritage art of panning. The Nuggets request you come dressed in period clothing. It informational and fun! The NUGGETS will also be teaching at the Roseville rock Rollers Gem & Mineral Show next month. This is usually a very busy show and we could use all the help we can get! It will be at the Roseville (Placer County) Fairgrounds, 800 All American City Blvd., Roseville, CA, March 28 & 29, Free Parking, General Admission is $6, Seniors 60+ $5, Kids 12 & under FREE. You can find a coupon at to print out for $1 off admission for you and anyone with you. Check out this address for more

4 information on the show. Hope to see you there! Cyndy Burchard Day Outing Schedule-2015 Hello Gold Hounds, Starting in February and running through October on the second Saturday of each month we are going to take a few day trips to the North Fork of the American River and the Bear River. There will be one campout other than the Annual Bear River outing and the Gold Panning Championships. The day trips will be for gold panning, sluicing, and metal detecting. Watch for s and posts the month before each trip comes around for details. February 14 th, Ponderosa/ Codfish Falls It has been a while since our last trip so let us start the new year off with a bang. Meet me at Ponderosa Bridge at 8 am on Saturday Feb. 14, We are going to hike downstream about a mile and a half to Codfish Creek, then up Codfish creek till you find a spot that you like. This is a trip for metal detectors, gold pans, and sluice s. It should be about a 4 on the Don Robinson scale so be prepared to hike out everything you bring in. Considering the fire we had in the area, there should be some new gold exposed so good luck to us all. Directions to the bridge; from Auburn, take I-80 east to West Paoli Lane, turn right and follow the signs down across the Railroad tracks, then right again down Ponderosa road. From Foresthill; if the gate is open, you probably already know the way. Any questions, me at robster132@gmail.com. As for the remaining year mark your calendars for these trips: April 11 th, Bear River upstream April 23 rd through 27 th, Bear River Campout (Members Only) June 13 th, Yankee Jims downstream July 2 nd through 6 th French Meadows August 8 th, Iowa Hill upstream September 12 & 13, Gold Panning Championships October 10 th, Ponderosa upstream Robert Jordan Outings Coordinator robster134@gmail.com
