Dear Members, 7/5/10 Welcome New Members and thank you to all our Renewing members for your years of support and Friendship! We can t believe that we just celebrated the July 4 th weekend. They say that as you get older time really flies by quickly. But this is just too much! 1 need some time to catch my breath! OUTING FOR 10/7 10/10 HAS BEEN CHANGED - Well we have some good news and bad news and this is the way it will be so I need to take my aspirin and quit fussing over the whole thing. The bad news is our Bear River Outing has been cancelled until next year, Through a major policy change by the Placer County Parks, we lost the reservation. We paid for our liability insurance on the campground 12/29 and reserved this for Columbus Day weekend. Normally we have to pay 90 days in advance. We found out when we went to pay the $ that this reservation was already gone. They stated that if a group came in with cash the policy was to remove any reservation that had not been paid yet for the specific date. No notification, nothing. NEW OUTING DATE WILL BE 10/7 10/12 -The good news is we will have the outing on the same date and running through 10/12 at our place. Don will be repairing the road more so that big rigs can get in and we will set up an outing schedule for each day here. This will also be our annual outing for the mine. If you have been here before you know that Don will have all the activities posted each day. We have lots of room. For our new members we will be sending directions and a map as the time gets closer. Check your s, as this is our only way of making contact with our members. Keep in mind that we live remote, no power, no phone and limited cell phone contact. Our is a voice mail we get through Foresthill. So the best way is or leave a message. It will be just like camping out with generators and propane! Just think how great it is to live like this each day? But really we keep things simple and this has been our home for 30 years now. More to follow. DREDGING BAN ISSUES - Please pick-up the latest International California Mining Journal for all the updates on the Dredging Ban issue. Keep pounding at Department Fish and Game for a review of the EIR while we are dredging, just like they did 12 years ago, and write your letters. I think a letter will get better and faster response than an . BLM IMPLEMENTS INTERIM FINAL SUPPLEMENTARY RULES FOR OUR AREA DUE 7/12/10. The Field Office in charge of this is the Mother Lode Field Office, 5152 Hillsdale Circle, El Dorado Hills, CA Contact James Barnes, BLM, (at jjbarnes@ blm.gov) for links to the document and provide you the book on the Management Plan that became effective 5/13/10! This is important to all of us that enjoy our public lands. Welcome Goldhounds! We are looking forward to seeing many of you at the Foresthill Heritage Celebration Labor Day Weekend. This will be a beautiful time here at the Memorial Park as the weather will be just right! We have not met a lot of our new members so if you do come in early come on over and introduce yourself. We will wear our nametags to make it easier for all of us to get acquainted. Welcome and thank you for your support. 2 Outing at Pennyweight Bar Saturday June 26, 2010 North Fork of the American River Twenty-three Goldhounds made this outing. Attending were: Craig and Kim Sanderson, John Laffey, Dave and Sharon DiMuzio, Brian DiMuzio, Bob Merrill, Ray Dodds, Royce Starr, Paul Vela, John Harper, Ed DiNardo, Dave James, Pat Bradford, Kathleen Cunningham, Jim Sansi, Ron and Forrest Gribble, Tom Skinner, Bob Brandt and his two grandsons, and me. I couldn t get a group picture because some came really early and got set up on the river even before we started from the trailhead! This is normal for Pennyweight Bar. Most everyone knows their way so they just go ahead. This works out great. Those who didn t know the way left with me at 8:00. We had a super good day. The gold at Pennyweight Bar is plentiful. It s not large gold but it s consistent and every pan yields something. Some of the Hounds used sluice boxes and this provided the greatest return. The sluice setup is hard there sometimes, and buckets are needed to haul back and forth. It s definitely good exercise! The day was perfect but by mid afternoon it started to get hot and the energy levels started dropping! I think we were all gone by 3:30 PM. A great outing! Four sluice boxes were set up in a row here!
Outing at Pennyweight Bar Saturday June 26, 2010 North Fork of the American River Gold from Brian, Dave and Sharon DiMuzio. They were running a sluice box. Great gold. Craig Sanderson Ray Dodds Must be gold some where here! Bob Brandt s picker!
Outing at Pennyweight Bar Saturday June 26, 2010 North Fork of the American River How s this for a line-up? It s got to be there somewhere! Royce Starr Ron and Forrest s gold Tom Skinner
Outing above Ponderosa and below Sore Finger Point June 27, 2010 Eighteen of us parked just up about ¼ of a mile up on the road on the Foresthill side of the Ponderosa Bridge. Our destination was way above the Ponderosa Bridge but first we had to go down a very old, closed, steep road to almost the river. From there we cut up the river for maybe a ¼ mile, and then headed up in a small flat of sorts to reach an old trail above. We found it pretty quickly and off we went. It appears the last time that trail was used was when we had a Goldhounds outing there on New Years Day many years ago. The trail was good in some places and disappearing in others. We flagged it as we went just so we could have an easier time coming back. We finally got there and it was a beautiful spot. The gold was very spotty and hard to find at the beginning, and maybe even the middle! Bill Rhodes was finding decent color in the moss so that helped then Craig Sanderson started a mini-gold rush up on the bank area above the sand, in some bedrock. Jim Ruppel pulled out some nice gold there and so did Tom Skinner. We were all tired by around 3:00. Since we had flagged it, some left at different times, and all got back safely. It was a very good hike and the gold was decent. Now that we know where it is on the bank, we might go back. It s a long way though, and lots of poison oak. Better think about this! Attending were: Butch Hoffman, Linda and Bill Rhodes, Paul Schneider, John Laffey, Jim Ruppel, Tom Skinner, Craig and Kim Sanderson, Greg Rhoades, Mike Slavensky, Charles Hite, Steve Larson, Jim Sansi, Teresa Johnson, Carol Jones, Kathleen Cunningham, and Don Robinson. (Kathleen came later and is not in the picture).
Outing above Ponderosa and below Sore Finger Point This is the location we were headed to. This was about half way there. Our destination is as far upstream as this picture shows. Two pictures along the way.
Outing above Ponderosa and below Sore Finger Point The tail end of the river bar we were working. As you can see, the river was running pretty high.
Red Point Mine Grant s Highlands Monday June 28, 2010 Up above the town of Foresthill is George Grant s property, appropriately named the Grants Highlands. Down the mountain from his place is the historic Red Point Mine. This is in a deep, remote canyon with a drift running under the mountain to reach a buried river channel. The drift is collapsed, but the ravine that it s in carries gold and many old relics of the mine, such as ore cars, wheels, rails and you name it. Twelve of us made our way down a trail we put in there last year, with the last part using a 100 foot rope just to give us some better handholds as the mountain got really steep. We made it safely and we went right to work. The ravine had pools of water and a few places for a sluice setup. The temperature was nice and cool, while we understand the temperature soared in the valley. The water was cold, cascading down the mountain there. Gold? Some of the Hounds did well. Butch Hoffman had some really nice gold and Mike Lovett not only had some nice color, but also a picker nugget! This was a great trip and one we ll have to make again next year! Kneeling, left to right: Dawn Forcier, Dale Sorenson, Forrest Gribble, Butch Hoffman Standing, left to right: Jim Sansi, Mike Lovett, Jim Ruppel, Ron Gribble, Brian DiMuzio, Tom Skinner, Dave DiMuzio, Bill Rhodes.
Red Point Mine Grant s Highlands On our way down. Are we lost? What was that crashing sound in the bushes over there? Brian and Dave set up right away. I don t think they moved from that spot all day! Jim was trying to figure out how to get the ore car out. Then he thought just maybe wheels? Finally he settled for some gold!
Red Point Mine Grant s Highlands Forrest and crew hard at work. Jim went further down the ravine. Found gold. Tom Skinner had a good spot too. Mike was on bedrock and was picking up flakes! Mike s gold. Some gold and quartz too. The picker nugget was thick! (picture close to actual size).
Pickering Bar North Fork of the American July 2, 2010 This was a great way to start out the Fourth of July weekend. Pickering Bar has long been a favorite prospecting area for a lot of Goldhounds, and over the years has paid out some really nice gold and nuggets. It s a tough hike. No two ways about it. First it s a long rough, four-wheel drive that takes a good 45 minutes to get down. The ruts are deep and if your truck slips down into one of them someone else is going to pull you out. Twelve of us made this trip and it went really well. It took us about an hour of hiking to get there from where we parked, and maybe just a little more time to hike out. The gold was plentiful in several areas, but spotty. We found lots of color but no nuggets. There were some larger flakes but not a nugget like Mike Lovett found at the Red Point trip. We had a great time and we ll be back, maybe later this summer. We need to cross over to Three-Pennyweight Bar. The river was way too swift and deep this time to cross. This was a really good trip. Bottom row, left to right: Dawn Forcier, Nick Ares, Don Coppin, Robert Scott. Standing, left to right: Mike Lovett, Brian Di Muzio, Greg Rhoades, Jim Sansi, Tom Skinner, Ron Malinowski, Dave Mraz.
Pickering Bar North Fork of the American Walking the plank! Dave Ron and Dawn Robert Jim I had a lot of more really good pictures but I ve completly run out of room for this newsletter. In fact, I ve exceeded my limit already!!
