9/9/09 Dear Members, What a wild, hectic and fun weekend at the California State Gold Panning Championships. We are running late with the newsletter so it will be shorter but next month s we will catch up. Don will cover all of the Championships in his notes next month. It was great to see some of you that had not competed for awhile jump in and go for the gold. And the end result worked well enough that you won a medal! Our raffle was not as big as some of the larger donations has been cut back due to the change in State s dredging rules. We normally have nice prizes. This year our Casino s have cut back drastically (must tell us something) and the reason they gave was the economy. But our raffle went well for a couple of reasons. Mike Bowers donated another boulder laced with gold and we put it on the raffle table. It was so busy with everyone checking out the gold and buying tickets that we had to guard it at all times to make sure it would stay there. And another reason our raffle went well was because our famous artist, Joe Cardoza, painted a beautiful picture with Bear River in the background and featured Mike and Barbara Sutton. Some of the our new members may not have met Mike and Barbara before but they are known as the famous Gold Panning Sutton Family. Not only has Mike and Barbara been to many World Gold Panning events, their children are following in their footsteps and have won many medals. Between the Sutton Family buying up a lot of raffle tickets because they wanted Mom and Dad s picture, we made $2,020 total. Wow! Thanks everyone. Now the real story to all of this is that we had members lined up to buy the painting from who ever won, and give it to Mike and Barbara. Well the winner was our Head Judge, Merle Litszinger. As Merle was picking up the picture at the raffle booth, members were heading towards him. Merle walked the picture over to Mike and Barbara and gave it to them. Bless you Merle. You made the Sutton Family very, very happy. And the weekend could not have ended better. Wonderful weather and Friends! Thank you all so much. I will have a list of the winners at Pioneer by Friday and a list with me at the meeting. The following is the winners of our main prizes and I am still trying to call some of you. We will have someone at the Veterans Hall in Auburn as some of the members will not be at Bear River and know about the change. Our schedule will be worked out by 10/1 and Don will update you. OUTING AT OUR MINE, HAPPY BRIDE MINE, ON 10/29, AFTER 1:00 ON THURSDAY UNTIL MON- DAY AM BY 12:00. We have a lot of parking for motorhomes, campers, trucks or tenting. Don will have a schedule posted of events and will keep you posted on weather conditions. Wear layered clothing as evenings are already cold White tennis shoes do not survive Copperbottom dirt. It is hard to believe that we are talking about the end of the year. It started off a little on the slow side in March and now I feel that the days have flown by faster than normal, hummm, maybe it s the age? Love to you, Annie.
LaPorte Outing on Slate Creek below American House August 21, 22,23 This was a perfect time for LaPorte. The weather was cool during the evenings and perfect during the day. This was the last outing before the Championships and we had a really good time. The gold was more than decent and we left a lot for the next time as well! On the way down. We ar just getting ready for four-wheel drive. This is at the top of the mountain just before we start a small, narrow, dirt, steep, switch-backed road! There is no passing on the road except at horseshoe turns, and sometimes not even then. The hope is that you won t meet anyone going down or coming out! From the top to the bottom takes maybe 15 minutes, but it seems longer! To the left is a friendly critter that welcomed us!
LaPorte Outing on Slate Creek below American House August 21, 22,23 Above is the view of the canyon and the very center is where we are going. That s looking down into Slate Creek. The picture on the left is the Slate Creek crossing that you have to make to get to the campground. There are a couple of big boulders just under the water waiting for an oil pan! You have to know this crossing well!
LaPorte Outing on Slate Creek below American House August 21, 22,23 Almost a pennyweight nugget! Slate Creek. easily crossable and lots of bedrock.
LaPorte Outing on Slate Creek below American House August 21, 22,23 John Adachi walked so much he wore out his toes! Jim and Dale working to get some nice gold from under the boulder. It just had to be moved first! Mike knows it s there! Just got to get to it!
