1 The Washington August 2017 Greater Seattle Chapter SDC Founded in 1969 Volume 47 Number 8 The President s STEERING COLUMN Hello! July was a very busy month with lots of Studebakerrelated events! We had our annual, multichapter, multi-club Mud Mountain Dam picnic which was very well attended. We had special guests, Denny and Cindy Foust. They live in Pennsylvania and are from the Keystone SDC chapter, but they were in our area on behalf of the International Meet Committee. If you were at the picnic, you heard our request for volunteers for the 2018 SDC International meet, which will be happening in late August 2018 in Tacoma. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered so far. I am in the process of sending out s to all of the committees to firm up volunteers and to start on the next wave of planning. As I write this, we seem to have a good number of volunteers for the swap meet, registration, hospitality, tours and we even have an SDC meet treasurer! We still need some people to help with the auction, kids events and other committees, so if you can help, we can use you! We have several chapters involved, but the event will be sponsored by the Seattle and Tacoma SDC chapters. The Avanti and Antique Studebaker clubs are also involved in planning their events. We are going to try to work together as much as possible to make the entire event a success. Look for lots more about this in upcoming newsletters. Feel free to me at francie1965@yahoo.com if you would like to help in any of the committees. I hope to see you at the Berry ranch on August 13 th! We used to call our house the Rambler Ranch but we now have a free-rangin Studebaker and even a Packard out in the yard along with some Ramblers. We can have a tech meeting if someone has a small project. Please me at francie1965@yahoo.com to RSVP so we make sure we have enough burgers to put on the grill. All the best, Laurel

3 Page 3 The Washington President SECRATARY S SCRIBBLES We had a marvelous picnic this year. The weather was perfect, the food delicious, and there were too many cars and people to count! I tried to note all the cars, but I know I missed a bunch - my apologies if I miss yours in the list. We had four Avantis, one M-series truck, one C-cab truck, a '57 Silver Hawk, a '37 Pres. coupe, a '41 Commander sedan, a '38 Commander, a '39 Champion coupe, a '39 President sedan, two '64 convertibles, a '54 Commander, a '53 "Lowboy", and a '60 Lark wagon. WOW. I do wish I had gone around with a tablet for everyone to sign in, including their cars. Next year I will do better! the National SDC Organization furnishes for the hosting Chapters, and the help they provide. James Bell told us he negotiated "a great price" with the Museum, but did not state the dollar amount. He told us the Museum will provide the show field and a banquet room, along with meeting rooms. The Dome parking lot will be available for the Swap Meet and car trailer parking. The car show will be open to the public, and have a $5.00 entrance fee. Our wonderful President, Laurel Berry opened the Meeting by introducing Denny Faust and his There will be a one-time fee of $14.00 per person for those registering for the Meet, which will allow entrance to the Museum, show field and swap area for the entire time of the Meet. This will be included in the Registration Fee. wife. They came from Pennsylvania to check out the hotels, America's Car Museum, and the Tacoma area for the 2018 International Meet. Denny told us what Three Hotels will be used: La Quinta, Holiday Inn, and Best Western - all in Tacoma. There will be enough rooms for the SDC, AOAI and ASC. Denny mentioned all the clubs could share one Hospitality room if desired. Denny has been involved in the last seven Intl Meets, and thinks the 2018 Meet will have around 450. registrants, based on his experience. He said 40% of registrants will attend the banquet.

4 Page 4 Denny said Cornerstone will do the Registration forms and collect the money if we want. They do charge a fee, and it was unclear if the hosting chapters would have to pay for their service. Denny told us the company "Right Impressions" does a great job with trophy plaques. Denny said the hosting chapters will receive $5000 guaranteed, regardless of how much the National Organization brings in. The $5000 The new Meet format uses "drive-thru" judging. Denny told us the National provides their own Professional Judges. They use a computer program as they go along, and they have all the results when the judging is complete. James Bell told us the #1 Avanti will be restored in time for the 2018 Meet. Mary West asked about security for the cars at the hotels, and the swap booths. Denny told us the National will hire security guards as needed, if the Museum does not have them. would be split evenly between the sponsoring chapters. Debbie Massie will be the Treasurer, and she will open a new account for the Meet, and will keep it separate from the clubs' funds. Laurel had Bob Bryant list all the volunteers for each category. We have a lot of volunteers so far. Thanks to everyone for making the picnic such a success, and for volunteering! Mary West for Bill Hallett Denny Faust, Laurel Berry and James Bell

5 I LOVE CANADA!!! The Can Am Zone Meet in Calgary, Alberta Canada was wonderful. We were a little concerned about the forest fires as we started out, but the powers-that-be cleared the way and we were treated to almost perfect weather. Kevin Fonseca, Francis Prefontaine and the members of Alberta s Edmonton SDC chapter did a great job. The show and swap meet were held in the parking lot of the meet hotel (Delta Calgary South). Always nice when everything is concentrated. Lots of different chapters were represented wish I had counted them as they were called out. They came from Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. There was even one from California (that is a long distance away). Our chapter had 6 representatives, and we came home with trophies for them all. Ken and Kathy Durkee won Best of Division as well as BEST OF SHOW!!! for their 1957 Silver Hawk. W000WOOOWOOO. Jerry and Alene Grant from Sequim won in their division for their door Commander. And Odd and Greta Justad, who chickened out and drove their Subaru, still managed to walk off with the door prize. Beautiful cars, wonderful people, great food it doesn t get any better. Already looking forward to next year. Short CAN-AM Report (by Greta). Jerry and Alene Grant:; Kathy and Ken Durkee The Show field at the Hotel Page 5
