Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m., but coffee will be available at 11:00 a.m. if you want to come early. The menu for lunch will be King Ranch casserole, green beans and salad. There will be a small charge of $5.00 for all except children age 12 and under who may eat free. As in the past, the Bayou Cities Chapter will hold their October meeting at the picnic, and, hopefully, members from other clubs will join us. We are expecting the new South Central director, Bob Canada from Oklahoma, to be here, too. So come and join us for fellowship, tire kicking, good food and BEAUTIFUL cars. 2 Page 2 The Hubcap PRESIDENT S CORNER By Mark Brians It s hard to believe it is October already and time for our annual picnic on Saturday, October 11, 2014, at the Hollands in College Station. This is a joint meeting with the Bayou Cities Chapter and is our biggest meeting of the year, so you do not want to miss it. The details are on page one of this Hubcap. September 13, 2014, was the annual Drive Your Studebaker Day and I hope you drove your Studebaker. I attended a small car show at a retirement center which was also celebrating Military Appreciation Day, and it was a Fun Day. I snapped a couple of pictures and wrote it up to send in to our editor. I hope you sent in your Drive your Studebaker Day experiences. I will be looking for them here in the Hubcap and maybe even in Turning Wheels. I got in our 12 foot tall feather flag banner and will have it displayed at the Hollands. Our new South Central Zone board of directors member, Bob Canada, who replaced Ebon Jones will be at our picnic meeting for you to meet and receive your input. Mr. Canada hails from Bixby, OK. Thank You, Ebon, for all your service! I am looking for input from you at this meeting on our chapter Christmas party on what you want to eat, gift exchange, teddy bears or something different? Give it some thought and bring your suggestions to this meeting. We have ordered sunny and 75 degree weather for October 11, 2014, so drive your Studebaker or Brand X if you must to our picnic at the Hollands. See you soon. Mark AUGUST MEETING TEXAS GRILL IN BASTROP A hardy group of 30, driving eight Studebakers braved the 100 degree weather to attend the first meeting of the 30th year of the Central Texas Chapter, SDC, held at the Texas Grill in Bastrop, Texas, on Saturday, August 9, Election of officers was held and the following will serve for the year: Mark Brians, President; Estella Smith, Vice President; Hazel Holland, Secretary-Treasurer; B.B. Holland, Editor; and Liz Hirschler, Publisher. Mark announced that Drive Your Studebaker Day is September 13 and we would not have a special event. Instead, he urged everyone to make a special effort to drive their Studebaker wherever they happen to go on that day. Following a discussion of various flags and banners advertising the Studebaker Drivers Club being offered to the individual chapters at a discount, it was agreed Mark would purchase a twelve foot sign/banner at a cost of $ The 50/50 drawing of $59.00 ($58.00) to the club was won by Estella Smith. Various Studebaker related door prizes were won by Onnie Weaver, Nick Dynis, Joyce Pyle, Kirk Smith and Ken Smith.

B. and Hazel Holland When planning our recent trip to the Far East (Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, etc.) we contacted club members, Chester Bradfield and his wife, Nancy, to say we d be traveling within four miles of their home and garage full of cars in Bridgewater, Virginia. They cordially invited us to stop by and spend the night, which we did. Chester and Nancy are longtime members of SDC and retired owners of Good Printers, Inc. who printed Turning Wheels for 20 years. He has served as president of the Studebaker National Foundation whose purpose is to raise money for various charitable and educational purposes related to all aspects of Studebaker. Chester and Nancy are members of several chapters of the Studebaker Drivers Club, as well as clubs of other marquees and participate in many tours across the The First Filling Station United States. In addition to two wonderful meals and a comfortable bed in a lovely home on 100 acres of Virginia farmland, we were treated to beautiful scenes of green rolling hills, cornfields, and a garage of about 16 Studebaker cars and trucks and other memorabilia, including an antique John Deer tractor and one of the first filling stations, both of which are pictured in this Hubcap. Fort Hood sent a huge truck and a Humvee with a half dozen soldiers to meet the public and celebrate. They were a super nice group of young soldiers.

5 The Hubcap Page 5 DRIVE YOUR STUDEBAKER DAY - SEPTEMBER 13, 2014 By Mark Brians This year I drove my 55 Studebaker pickup to Stoney Brook Assisted Living Center for Drive Your Studebaker day. They were celebrating Military Appreciation Day and their fourth anniversary in Belton, Texas. They had invited several car clubs to come honor our military and let their residents see them. Fort Hood sent a huge truck and a Humvee with a half dozen soldiers to meet the public and celebrate. They were a super nice group of young soldiers. They were from a combat engineering unit that clears roadside bombs and keeps the roads open in the Middle East. It was very interesting talking with them. There was a good band playing and hot dogs for lunch with cake for dessert. It was cool but many of the residents came out to look at the cars and my 55 Studebaker truck was popular. There was a 62 GT Hawk there also owned by member Allan Hale. Members Joe and Karen Clark drove a Jetliner up from Cameron. It was a fun day and you felt good honoring our military and talking Studebaker to the public and the residents of Stoney Brook.

Then I take two small hammers and hold one behind the cable with one hand and hit the cable with the other hammer down the entire length.

6 Page 6 The Hubcap TECH TIPS By Mark Brians and Onnie Weaver This time I have a few basic tips that maybe you can use. Have you had a control cable that is stuck or just stiff on your hood or some other application? I use this technique to free them up. I start by folding up a paper towel sheet into a 2x2 pad. I then hold it behind the cable and spray my favorite penetrating oil on the length of the cable and the towel controls the mess. By the time you finish the towel is saturated and helps to soak the cable. Then I take two small hammers and hold one behind the cable with one hand and hit the cable with the other hammer down the entire length. Do not hit it so hard that you damage the cable but bounce it along with many light hits. You may need to reapply the penetrating oil at this point. If the cable is free, wipe it down with a dry towel. I then take another folded towel and use motor oil to give a more lasting lubrication. I have used this on some pretty rusty and stuck solid cables with good results. Do not try to force the cable to move; just beat it up some more. Next I found a vendor for Ranco automatic heater valve diaphragms, also called climatizer valves. They were used on many makes and this kit has instructions and the diaphragm, which is 95% of the leaks in these valves. The vendor is Dave and Janet Thibeault in Maynard, Ma The kit is $15 plus shipping and fits many different models and cars. He also does rebuilds on them if you are not up to it.
