See you soon in College Station for our picnic. Mark CAR SHOW AT COLLEGE STATION 75TH CELEBRATION November 16, 2013 By: B. B. Holland If you were at the Marlin meeting or if you re on the internet, you received a copy of the registration form for the car show at the 75th birthday celebration of the City of College Station. Although Texas A&M University is 138 years old, the city of College Station wasn t chartered until October, The car show will be held at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum on November 16, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. I m hoping to flood the show with Studebakers! If you have not sent in a registration, you can do so at the 35th Picnic on October 12. There is NO registration fee. There will be a large room in the museum dedicated to the history of College Station. This display will include memorabilia donated by local citizens and is free to the public. There will be a charge for the remainder of the museum, but if you haven t visited in the past five years, it has been completely remodeled. The airplane and the 47 Studebaker are still there, however. There will be no lack of entertainment including music. Union Pacific will have their model train on site to take people for rides around the West Campus of Texas A&M. Be sure to come to the picnic for more details. Then on November 16, drive your Studebaker or brand X antique auto to the Bush Library for a day of kickin tires and fun.

3 Page 3 AUGUST MEETING IN MARLIN Twenty-five loyal Studebaker owners braved the 102 degree heat to meet and eat at the Chicken Place in Marlin on August 10. Following a rundown of upcoming events of interest to CTC members and which will be listed in the Calendar of Future Events, the current slate of officers was unanimously reelected for another one year term. A small caravan consisting of Ken and Estella Smith, driving their 66 Commander, Patrick Mahoney driving his 50 Regal Deluxe sedan, and B.B. and Hazel Holland wimping out in their air conditioned Buick met at Sam s Club parking lot in College Station for the drive to Marlin. Ken furnished kolaches to give us strength to make the trip. B.B. Holland urged everyone to drive their Studebakers or brand X old cars to the 75th Anniversary Celebration car show to be held on November 16 at the George Bush Presidential Museum and Library in College Station. The 50/50 drawing was won by Virginia Weaver who donated all but her initial investment. He became known as the Studebaker Man in the area. Curtis and Edith loved to travel, especially to the International Studebaker Meets all over the United States. There were 7 beautiful antique automobiles in the funeral procession. See pictures below and on next page.

6 Page 6 TECH TIPS By Mark Brians This time let s talk about fans as in cooling. There are three basic types, fixed blade, flex and clutch fan used on our old cars. There are also electric fans. Fixed blade fans come in four to seven blades with varying pitch (blade angle) and diameters. They move lots of air but can be noisy and use more hp to run. They put more strain on the water pump, especially at higher speeds. Never use one of these fans that has bent blades or has cracks showing. With the blade mounted, I like to spin it with no belt to look for run out or wobble. If you have a fan shroud, the blade should set so it is in the opening not behind it. If you do not have a shroud, the blade should be within an inch of the radiator for best air flow. Flex fans pull lots of air and flatten out at higher speeds. Some fans have stiffeners added on them to retard flattening out as rpm goes up. Clutch fans have an aggressive blade and a viscous coupling that slips. Some have a more or less fixed slip and some have a thermostatic sensor on the front of them that locks up the clutch at a set temperature to give max air flow. These thermostatic clutches usually come in when 170 degree air from the radiator hits it. Care must be taken selecting a clutch fan as some come in at a higher temp and your engine will never run cooler than that, no matter what. They do work well when matched to the application. If you change the gearing in your car you should consider what that does to your fan speed and air flow at cruising speed. Lower rpm s may mean your fan is not pulling enough air across the radiator and the temp climbs. Then there is air conditioning. It seems that we never have enough air flow to make the AC work and keep the engine cool. I like to use a 14 to 16 inch fan on the condenser coil that runs when the AC compressor is running and when the radiator temp reaches 180 degrees by use of a adjustable temp control and relay. It also helps dissipate that heat buildup when we cut the engine off and it wants to boil over. I had a fan that the blade was held on with a clip on one of my cars. The clip broke and the fan blade hit the condenser coil making Noise and it almost ate the condenser coil up. The one I replaced it with has a lock nut with Loktite. No more clips for me. The temp controls are on E-bay for $35 delivered. I have never used an electric fan as the only cooling fan, but most all new cars use them. A quality fan is a must I think. If the electric fan has mounting tabs that slide into a groove of the fan be sure and superglue them in place so they cannot let the fan frame rub on the coil. I hope some of this gives you reason to think about your car s cooling fan and its important job. Keep those cars rolling. Mark
