4 CYCLE TRAIL Ae Marika January 2012 The start of the cycle trail. Photo courtesy of Peter de Graaf. The Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail is on track for a grand opening by the end of this year. A 13.5 km Kaikohe to Okaihau section of the 84 km trail was opened to public use in Construction of a further 20 kilometres of the trail between Kaikohe and Kawakawa is expected to be completed by June. This includes two 6 km sections between Kawakawa and Otiria and between the old Kaikohe Railway Station and the Kaikohe Airport which are already open to public use. Current indications are the whole Kaikohe to Kawakawa section will be fully constructed towards the middle of this year, said Far North District Council Infrastructure and Asset Manager David Penny. If all goes well, we could be looking to a grand opening by the end of the year. Trail construction has started on the rail corridor between Otiria and Mangakahia Road. However, this section will remain closed until all trail, bridge, bollard, cattle-stop, gates and fencing have been completed An 800m section between the Kaikohe Railway Station and Taheke Road is also still under construction. A route for the Okaihau to Okaka Road section has now been confirmed in consultation with private landowners and work will begin soon. Consultation with landowners about the route between Okaka Road and Horeke is ongoing. The final challenge will be to complete the coast-tocoast route by linking the trail from Kawakawa to the Bay of Islands. Cycle Trail Completion On Track says Council Council staff have been talking with the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway Trust about making this section a separate steam train experience. At present, the steam train runs an 8km round trip from Kawakawa to Taumarere Railway Station with facilities to carry bikes. The trust hopes to offer a live rail experience right through to Colenso s Triangle near Opua. The rail experience will be another point of difference for the Twin Coast Cycle project and will be an added marketing tool to encourage visitors to the Far North. The council is grateful for the support and cooperation it has received from farmers and landowners during the construction phase. Without this level of understanding and cooperation, we would not have been able to advance work anywhere near as quickly. Discussions are ongoing with farmers and trail neighbours. We need these people in particular and the wider community on board if the Far North is to fully reap the economic potential this project offers. The council also appreciates the contributions of Community Max workers who have built and maintained sections of the trail, carved poupou markers and propagated native shrubs to plant along the trail. These guys and girls have provided valuable input and must be thanked for their commitment and contribution to the whole project. rry 4

12 TAONGA Ae Marika January 2012 Preserving Taonga for the Future A two-day taonga conservation workshop held on Otaua (Pukerata) Marae in November last year, brought several Ngāpuhi communities together. The workshop was organised by Hapū Development in response to Ngāpuhi who identified the need to learn about conserving marae and personal taonga. Textile and Paper Conservators Rangi Te Kanawa of Te Papa Tongarewa and Vicki Anne Heikell from the Alexander Turnbell Library facilitated the workshop. Hokimate Harwood (Te Papa Tongarewa) who specialises in feather and hair identification of taonga Māori also assisted. The challenges of learning the art of making archival boxes, carrying out calculations and measurements, cutting and folding were rewarded when taonga were safely boxed for storage. Some of the taonga brought to the workshop included 11 korowai, a pounamu patu, minute books from the 1870s, whakapapa records and a Paipera Tapu. On the last day Rangi Te Kanawa said, There was a feeling that the taonga had been given the special attention it commanded; that it s become a part of them and an item of even greater value for that. It gives them peace of mind knowing that the archival box they ve created has provided the best storage that can be had and that their taonga can now safely be handed down through the generations. Dale van Engelen of Whakapara Marae said: Having the people from Te Papa (and the National Library of New Zealand) to teach us was a privilege indeed. Their knowledge and willingness to share was an inspiration. The workshop participants. 12

13 ISSUE 31 Forestry Project Work Invaluable FORESTRY NEWS IN PROJECT BRIEF Hori Niha at work on the block. Hori manages a five-person Taskforce Green team. A project underway in a Ngāti Hine forest near Pipiwai is helping protect 500 hectares of native forest and providing a way for young people to become involved in a valuable community project. Te Kaiakiri Mai O Te Orewai Trust established a Community Pest Control Area for its forest in June last year. Community Pest Control Areas (CPCA) are Northland Regional Council initiatives which provide a tool for communities to undertake pest control and council funding for five years to help support community pest control initiatives. Ex-forestry worker Hori Niha leads the work on the ground, which involves trapping possums and recovering their fur. Hori manages a five-person Taskforce Green team which works systematically across the whole forest using historic logging tracks to gain access, including sometimes by quad and horseback. Hori says the rediscovery of old track systems has been rewarding and the possum control has not only provided a way to protect the bush but has also meant that the team is learning many new skills. The hills can be steep and the work demanding at times, as we will often check traps in the rain. Everyone must be physically fit and enjoy being in the forest, he says. The team can service 300 possum traps and has an extensive network of trails which link major tracks to ensure complete coverage of the forest. We also target stoats and rats in selected areas as these pests are also causing damage, says Hori. He says the team is aware that the kauri dieback disease can be spread by footwear so warns people not to enter the forest for hunting or walking without checking with them first. In addition to the regional council-funded CPCA the project has also gained the support of the ASB Trust, Te Rūnanga-Ā-Iwi-O-Ngāpuhi and Hancock Forestry.
