2 DAWN SERVICE ANZAC DAY Friday, 25 April 2014 This Anzac Day, we look ahead to the centenary of the beginning of the First World War in August. New Zealand had a population of just over one million people at that time; around 120,000 of our men enlisted to serve almost half of whom became casualties of war, wounded or killed. Anzac Day honours those soldiers who fought at Gallipoli; it also commemorates those who have served in all conflicts in which New Zealand has been involved. 3 DAWN SERVICE DAWN SERVICE HYMN - ABIDE WITH ME LED BY THE SALVATION ARMY AUCKLAND CITY AND FELLOWSHIP BANDS AND AUCKLAND YOUTH CHOIR Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide; When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me. Swift to its close ebbs out life s little day; Earth s joys grow dim, its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see O Thou who changest not, abide with me. I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless; Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness; Where is death s sting? Where, grave, Thy victory? I triumph still, if Thou abide with me. Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies; Heav n s morning breaks, and earth s vain shadows flee; In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me. Prayers will be offered by Chaplain Dr Leon O Flynn, RNZChD HYMN - THE RECESSIONAL (LEST WE FORGET) God of our fathers, known of old Lord of our far-flung battle-line. Beneath whose awful hand we hold, Dominion over palm and pine Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget lest we forget! Far-called, our navies melt away; On dune and headland sinks the fire; Lo, all our pomp of yesterday Is one with Nineveh and Tyre! Judge of the Nations, spare us yet, Lest we forget lest we forget! The tumult and the shouting dies; The captains and the kings depart Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice A humble and contrite heart. Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget lest we forget Anzac Dedication read by student representatives, Celia Scott-Will-Harknett of Rangitoto College and Barlas Türkyilmaz from Istanbul Erkek Lisesi (Turkey) (Please repeat after the students: We will remember them ) The Mayor of Auckland, Len Brown, will place upon the Cenotaph a wreath in memory of all fallen servicemen and women, and all who served. Last Post Flags lowered, lights out, one-minute silence The Ode Read in Māori by Murray Watene, Veteran; Read in English by Terry Culley, Veteran E kore rātou e koroheketia Pēnei i a tātou kua mahue nei E kore hoki rātou e ngoikore Ahakoa pēhea i ngā āhuatanga o te wā. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. We will remember them. Reveille (bugle call) The sounding of the reveille at this service proclaims our belief that the Anzac landing at Gallipoli was the dawn of the nationhood of New Zealand and Australia. Flags up, lights up ITEM POPPIES AND POHUTUKAWA From Flanders fields where poppies grew; The seeds of our young nation flew Up from that blood-soaked foreign soil; Borne on the winds of world turmoil And settled halfway round the Earth; To forge our nation at its birth Chorus: And yet in Flanders poppies sigh While our young men lie still nearby; Who gave their lives that we may be Forever safe, forever free; In the land of the Pohutukawa tree Since then in growing nationhood Our warriors have proudly stood; Many times in foreign lands Cradling freedom in their hands; On land, in sky and on the sea Shaping our identity (Chorus) And thus our history has been told How will our future now unfold; Should we be called in peace and war To play our part as those before; Whose memories rest in Tane s bowers Of red Pohutukawa flowers (Chorus) During the singing of this song, Mayor Len Brown, accompanied by student representatives of Rangitoto College and Istanbul Erkek Lisesi, will place a cross in the Field of Remembrance (east of the Cenotaph, facing the Museum).

5 CIVIC SERVICE CIVIC SERVICE HYMN O GOD OUR HELP IN AGES PAST LED BY THE SALVATION ARMY AUCKLAND CITY AND FELLOWSHIP BANDS AND AUCKLAND YOUTH CHOIR O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home. Under the shadow of Thy throne, still may we dwell secure; sufficient is Thine arm alone, and our defence is sure. Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame, from everlasting, Thou art God, to endless years the same. A thousand ages, in Thy sight, are like an evening gone; short as the watch that ends the night, before the rising sun. Time, like an ever-rolling stream, bears all who breathe away; they fly forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come; be Thou our guide while life shall last, and our eternal home. Prayers of Dedication and the Benediction by Reverend Marilyn Welch, Methodist Church of New Zealand Last Post Flags lowered, one-minute silence The Ode Read in Māori by Murray Watene, Veteran; Read in English by Dame Trelise Cooper, DNZM E kore rātou e koroheketia Pēnei i a tātou kua mahue nei E kore hoki rātou e ngoikore Ahakoa pēhea i ngā āhuatanga o te wā. WAR BEGINS - A COMMEMORATIVE SERVICE TUESDAY 5 AUGUST At 3pm on 5 August 1914, the New Zealand Governor, Lord Liverpool, read a telegram from His Majesty King George V to a crowd of 15,000 people gathered at Parliament in Wellington. The telegram expressed the King s appreciation for the solidarity from his overseas dominions after Britain declared war with Germany. Eager to support the Empire in its time of need, Lord Liverpool responded with New Zealand s own commitment to make any sacrifice necessary to maintain its heritage and birthright. With that commitment, New Zealand officially entered the First World War, forever changing our society. Remembering the sacrifice that New Zealand would make during the First World War, the Museum will host a special commemorative service on the evening of this historic occasion. The service will feature a re-enactment of the Governor s telegram-reading, a ceremonial wreathlaying and the singing of the national anthems. ENLIST NOW - CENTENARY LAUNCH WEEKEND SATURDAY 9 AND SUNDAY 10 AUGUST Following the commemorative service of War Begins, the Museum will showcase its Centenary Programme with a weekend packed full of activities on-site, off-site and online. ONLINE CENOTAPH The Museum s legacy for the centenary is the redevelopment of our Cenotaph database into the online gathering point for the personal and official memory of people who served for New Zealand Aotearoa. To coincide with the start of the commemorations, this rich biographical database of New Zealand service personnel for which the Museum is both owner and kaitiaki (guardian) on behalf of the people of Aotearoa is being redeveloped into a comprehensive online hub for New Zealand soldiers stories. The vision for Online Cenotaph is that the enhanced site becomes a vital online social space where enthusiasts, family and researchers alike, can share their information and knowledge of New Zealand servicemen and women. While facts and figures will remain an important part of Online Cenotaph it will increasingly feature the recording of personal stories. The enhanced Online Cenotaph will launch in late GALLIPOLI IN MINECRAFT Auckland Museum has teamed up with the Media Design School and their Pick & Shovel community to recreate the landscape of Gallipoli in Minecraft.
