3 Our long-term partnership with Scitech provides positive outcomes for many students Welcome to Rio Tinto s 2016 Communities Review. This report highlights the many activities and programmes we are privileged to be involved in as part of our commitment to Western Australia. Last year we contributed $17.9 million to 130 community programmes and provided $9.8 million of in-kind support across the state. I am proud our contribution enabled the successful delivery of many initiatives by our innovative community partners across Western Australia. Our partners work with us to identify community needs and deliver localised programmes in response. Some partners we have collaborated with for many years in fact in 2017 we celebrate 20 years of partnership with The Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation and Black Swan State Theatre Company. We truly value these relationships and the outcomes they continue to deliver to people across the state. When I was appointed chief executive of Iron Ore last year, I was excited to see the breadth and depth of our support to the Western Australian community. These contributions are not just to the Perth and Pilbara communities but also multiple regional fly-in and fly-out (FIFO) source communities; delivering a truly state wide reach and impact. We are proud to be part of the state s history. In 2016 our pioneering origins were highlighted when we celebrated 50 years of operations in the Pilbara. In reaching this milestone, we recognised the thousands of people and businesses who have contributed to making Rio Tinto what it is today. I am truly looking forward to what we will achieve together in the future. 4 Spotlight on our 2016 achievements We contributed $17.9 million of financial and $9.8 million of in-kind voluntary contributions to the WA community. We provided 157 Dollars for Doers grants worth $78,500 to local organisations or charities. where employees volunteer their time. Our regional FIFO programme provided a $184.7 million economic impact across regional communities. Our employees fundraised $91,269 for five charities and our business provided a further $60,595 as part of our Choose your own Charity programme. In 2016, our Better Beginnings partnership enabled 98 per cent of all WA kindergarten classes to participate in early literacy programmes.

5 More than 2,000 regional employees live outside of the Pilbara, representing 30 per cent of our entire FIFO workforce. More than 300,000 visitors explored Scitech s Rio Tinto Innovation Central. We contracted Indigenous 54 businesses totalling $108 million in expenditure. We supported 32 through our Indigenous Scholarship Programme and 136 Indigenous students Indigenous people participated in pre employment, trainee and apprenticeship programmes. 4,000 students participated in the Cinesnaps Schools Programme, part of the CinefestOZ Film Festival. 10 We participation agreements finalised our tenth participation agreement with Traditional Owners in the Pilbara - covering our Pilbara operational footprint.

6 Delivering positive state wide impacts Our 50th celebrations included a travelling exhibition which engaged people of all ages 50 years in the making In 2016 we commemorated the 50th anniversary of our Pilbara operations. Celebrations recognised the thousands of people who enabled our business to be the success it is today. Our employees, their families, our joint venture and community partners, and all levels of government have all helped shape our business and enabled us to contribute to the progress of the state. The Groundbreakers Trail travelled across the state, connecting with more than 10,000 people including a dedicated programme for schools in the Pilbara. With more than 35,000 people visiting our Groundbreakers exhibit at the Perth Royal Show, manned by 100 employee volunteers, we were able to share some of the businesses pioneering past and a glimpse of our exciting future. Innovation educating future leaders In 2016 Scitech was recognised for leading innovation in WA, winning the 2016 Asia Pacific Network of Science and Technology Centres Creative Science Exhibit Award for Rio Tinto Innovation Central a permanent exhibition space that in 2016 welcomed more than 300,000 visitors. Our partnership with Scitech was also recognised at the Department of Mines and Petroleum 2016 Awards for Excellence programme, winning the Enduring Partnership Award. We enjoyed celebrating our 50th anniversary with thousands of people in Australia and internationally

7 Visual arts recognised for bridging distance Last year The Art Gallery of Western Australia was awarded the Indigenous Project or Keeping Place Award at the Museums and Galleries National Awards for our Desert River Sea: Kimberley Art Then and Now project. The award celebrates the important cultural legacy of this six year visual arts initiative, developed in consultation with senior artists, art centres and community members. Through our support the project will bridge the cultural and geographic distance between the artists of the Kimberley and national and international audiences. The project will conclude with a landmark exhibition in Targeted programme results in increased Indigenous leaders A focus on career progression for Indigenous employees is now delivering outcomes. Through our Indigenous Talent Review, high performers are identified and provided training, coaching and other professional development opportunities to enhance their career progression. Since inception, 60 Indigenous employees have been We are proud to support Indigenous employees identified as future business leaders, and provided with personal and career development, with five receiving promotions. We also supported 32 students as part of our Indigenous Scholarship Programme which provides financial and in-kind support, including involvement in our Vacation Work Placement programme. Last year 136 Indigenous people participated in pre-employment, trainee and apprenticeship programmes across Iron Ore. We continue to identify new opportunities to support Indigenous education and new pathways for employment for Indigenous people across the state. Recognising Indigenous people across the country As the first resource company endorsed by Reconciliation Australia as an Elevate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) organisation, we are proud to be a leader in Australia s reconciliation journey. We support the Recognise campaign and constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. In 2016 we invested $2.8 million into national Indigenous partnerships, supporting development, training and employment. Across the state we supported NAIDOC celebrations through our partnerships with local government and with our employees at our operations. NAIDOC celebrations at Brockman 4, Pilbara

8 Powering Pilbara communities Rock art at the heritage-listed Dampier Archipelago dates back thousands of years Leading the way with local government collaboration Our landmark Community Infrastructure and Services Partnerships with the Shire of Ashburton and City of Karratha continued to deliver initiatives and events in This innovative approach to working with local government continues to provide long-lasting benefits for the community and has significantly improved the vibrancy of the region through the delivery of high quality events, improved services and engaging programmes. Town beautification projects were completed in Dampier and Point Samson, including a revitalised beachfront. The new Dampier Community Hub provides a central facility for child care services, library, meeting rooms and a coffee hut. Paraburdoo Skatepark and Paraburdoo Childcare Centre both opened in It was also exciting to see the construction of the Red Earth Arts Precinct in Karratha commence, which Rio Tinto has committed $2 million towards. We have also committed $8 million toward the construction of Wickham Community Hub, which is due to commence in The purpose built Paraburdoo Childcare Centre opened in 2016

9 Progressing outcomes for Pilbara Aboriginal people In partnership with researchers from The University of Western Australia and rangers from Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation, we were amazed to uncover evidence of some of Australia s ancient settlements. The discoveries in the national heritage-listed Dampier Archipelago acknowledge Aboriginal occupation dating before and through the last ice age. Pioneering Participation Agreements with Pilbara Traditional Owners In 2016 we engaged an independent facilitator to complete a five year formal review of our Claim Wide Participation Agreements and Regional Framework Deed with several of our Pilbara Traditional Owner group partners. As part of this review, engagement activity included more 50 internal interviews and workshops and interviews with more than 70 external stakeholders. Outcomes and insights from the review will form the direction of the agreements over the coming years. Our Claim Wide Participation Agreement with the Banjima people commenced on 1 November our tenth Pilbara land access agreement. This agreement ensures all our Pilbara operations are covered by endorsed land use agreements. These agreements provide certainty to the business and ensure Pilbara Traditional Owners are provided with support and opportunities that promote wellbeing and growth into the future. We are proud to partner with Pilbara Traditional Owner groups and look forward to our continued work and collaboration. 10 Regional FIFO supports the state CinefestOZ Film Festival supports thousands of students across the South West through the Cinesnaps Schools programme Films bring benefit to the South West In 2016 we were proud to partner with CinefestOZ to support the delivery of the Cinesnaps Schools Program, IndigifestOZ and locally based volunteers that run the event the Movie Crew. Last year 4,000 students participated in the Cinesnaps Schools Program, providing young people across the South West with educational opportunities through carefully selected film screenings, professional development and workshops. Last year 22 student teams participated in the Cinesnaps Short Film Competition - a culmination of the Cinesnaps Schools Program, with more than 200 people attending the awards night. CinefestOZ Film Festival created more than 50 local internships and training opportunities, with overall attendance growing from 8,000 in 2008 to 25,000 last year. In 2016 the event generated a local economic impact of $7.7 million across the South West. We are pleased to be a key part of this iconic WA event as it continues to provide opportunities for the local community. Partnering with local government for community benefit Last year we cemented our partnership with the City of Greater Geraldton with a three year Memorandum of Understanding, which provides a framework for our engagement in the region. The partnership has already supported the employment of a youth vibrancy officer to increase youth development activities in the region. It also signifies increased engagement in Geraldton and formalises our commitment to the community. We also renewed our Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Busselton for an additional three years. This partnership has already delivered many positive outcomes including an engaging youth programme, the development of the Youth Advisory Council and capacity building for more than 40 young people. A similar programme also runs in the Shire of Broome with the development of the Youth Advisory Council a key achievement to date. We look forward to continuing to work together to deliver youth programmes and develop local opportunities for people in our regional FIFO locations such as the South West, Mid West and Kimberley.

11 The Shire of Broome supports opportunities for young people Regional FIFO boosts WA economy In 2016, a regional economic impact study highlighted the many positive outcomes of our regional FIFO programme. Analysing regional expenditure against procurement, community investment, air transport and salaries, our regional FIFO programme delivered an estimated economic impact of $184.7 million across our regional source communities. Pioneering regional FIFO from Geraldton in 2006, we now have more than 1,000 employees that fly directly from regional WA to our Pilbara operations and more than 2,000 of our employees live in regional towns outside the Pilbara. This year we celebrate ten years of FIFO from Broome and Busselton - reinforcing our long-term commitment to regional WA. Our contribution provides significant social benefit including enhancing local business, supporting local community organisations to deliver events, initiatives and programmes, diversifying regional employment choices and creating Indigenous employment opportunities. We work closely with the City of Busselton to support their youth development programme
