The proper frequency of watering will depend on the climatic conditions and the time of year. The type of potting medium being used can affect your plant's water requirements. Bark has a tendency to dry out more rapidly than sphagnum moss, for instance. It is important to remember, however, that even when the surface of your pot is dry, the root area may remain moist. Poke your finger or a regular wooden pencil an inch into the pot; if it feels moist to the touch or if the pencil looks moist, do not add additional water. 4 The Mystery of the Lost Potinara Lois Cinert, Contributing Editor All of you who watch CSI or Law and Order know that the end for the criminal is near when the good guys utter the words We have DNA evidence! That may be a good thing for finding criminals, but it is turning into a headache for orchid growers. If you thought you grew a Potinara, a nice little mini-catt, usually with intense colors and compact size, think again. The intergeneric name Potinara has disappeared for now. The names of the parents have changed, and those plants are now renamed. Think Rolfeara. Or Thwaitesara. With the help of DNA testing, many of the plants in the Cattleya family have been moved to other categories. Some each of Laelias are now Sophronitis; Brassavola are now Rhyncolaelias, and some Cattleyas are now Guarianthe. This has changed the genus or intergeneric name of many, many plants. If you have a BL, BC, BLC, LC, POT, SL, SC, or SLC, the designation has probably changed. Get used to different initials: GSL, RLC, SRT. One of the large changes was Brassavola digbyana and glauca, moved to Rhyncholaelia. This decreased the number of names in BLC from over 8,000 to 27. Such old classic names as Mount Hood, Pastoral, Marcella Koss, and Languedoc are now RLC s. Cattleya skinneri, bowringiana and Laelia aurantiaca are now Guarianthe, and changed all of their progeny. Such familiar names as Gold Digger, Frolic, and Hazel Boyd are now GSL. The largest group that was changed is the Laelias. Many of them were moved to Sophronitis, changing the LC group from over 10,000 to 237, and increasing the SC s to over 11,000. Laelias briegeri, cinnabarina, flava, lobata, milleri, perrini, and purpurata are now classed as Sophronitis. LC s Dinard, Drumbeat, Mini-purple, Canhamiana, and C G Roebling are among those changed. This should not make you run to change all of your plant name tags. This will be a gradual conversion on the personal and society level. It s going to take a long time for everyone to get used to the new names for familiar plants. The name changes in Cattleya and other genera will continue as the taxonomists learn more about the orchid family tree with the help of DNA testing. This is a Saturday as Sunday is Fathers Day. Let me know if you are interested. Tony W. ************************************************ Inter Society Orchid Display & Workshop A HUGE THANK YOU to Bruce for organising the Lottowest grant which has now been confirmed. This now guarantees the success of the event as it will pay for the hall hire and the advertising We have had a number of fine donations for the raffle including the wheelbarrow from Masters Hardware. Orchid bark from Ezi- Gro Orchids, two BIG flowering Phalaenopsis from Flora Plant and a number of donations from members. Keep up the good work folks. The Society will be needing all your assistance on both the Saturday (set up) and Sunday when we are open to the public. A roster will be on the raffle table at the next meeting. Helpers will be required to assist in setting out the trestles, marking out display areas, assisting with the plant sales on the Sunday, entry door ticket sales & raffles and generally talking to the public and drumming up membership. We now have eight societies that have confirmed their intention to attend the event so let s make it an Inter Society Orchid Display & Workshop to be remembered. Tony Watkinson Page 5
