2 March President s Message Thank you, to everyone who participated in our Spring Show. From set-up to clean-up, we could not continue these shows without your enthusiasm and support. It is our opportunity to showcase our hobby to the community and encourage others to join us. I want to personally welcome each new member that signed up during our spring show in Torrance. We re glad to have you as a member and we hope you will enjoy, learn, and have fun with us at the South Bay Orchid Society for many years in the future. A Special Thank You goes out to the volunteers from the Hawthorne Key Club, a local high school community club. Five members of the club served as volunteers at our show. THANK YOU! Many beautiful orchids were exhibited by our members, other clubs, and friends. Thank you for preparing your plants and bringing them in for display and judging. Congratulations to all the ribbon and award winners. The Best in Show award was presented to Joe Santy for the orchid Cym. Splatters Flamenco. Marla Corey, our Show Chair, again performed her magic in planning and coordinating a successful show. Thank you, Marla! The Society has acquired a number of Paphiopedilums from the collection of Billy Bates through the generous donation made by Norma Bates. You should look for those orchids on the Auction Table, a small number will be placed on the table in the next few months. On March 15th, June Brooks will be leading our annual bus trip to the Santa Barbara International Orchid Show. It promises to be a fun-filled trip including stops at Cal-Orchid and Santa Barbara Orchid Estate. Seats on the bus are still available, but will likely sell out soon, so don t delay. Contact June (310) to reserve your seat now, only $36.00 per person. At our next meeting on March 21st, our speaker Karen Muir, will be talking to us about hybridizing with red masdevailias. 4 Spring Orchid Show and Sale What a beautiful Spring Show and Sale we had. Everything ran smoothly thanks to the hard work of our committee chairs and everyone who came to help. Kayo Libiano and Charlie Brown recruited and organized the hosts and hostesses. They did a great job of keeping an eye on the showroom and answering questions the public might have, as well as staffing the plant hotel and working in the front lobby. Ron Henry and Larry Bergen organized the set-up of the show, which involved bringing all of our show supplies from storage and returning them. Thank you to everyone who showed up to help with this labor-intensive job and especially to those who stayed late to help with the final cleanup. June Brooks and Joanne Green kept the kitchen organized and the coffee hot. Everyone was well fed and ready to work. We have become well known among the vendors for the hospitality and good food at our shows. Thank you to everyone who brought in delicious food for our volunteers and vendors. Bob Streeter recruited qualified judges for our ribbon judging and for CSA and AOS judging. Karen Low, Art Hazboun, and Bob & Judy Fisher did an excellent job of getting the plants organized, which made the judging process on Saturday morning go smoothly. Joe Woods, our treasurer, spent long hours at the show keeping track of our gate receipts, recording the vendor fees and handling show expenses. Charlotte Morrison was at the Membership and Information table to welcome our guests, answer questions about our meetings, and to sign up new members. Thanks to her efforts we have twelve new members and several potential members. Art Hazboun and Larry Bergen made a lot of people happy by calling out the hourly winning raffle ticket number. The information collected as the raffle tickets are passed out gives us valuable insight into the effectivness of our advertising strategy. Karen Low, publicity chair, oversaw the printing of the updated posters and fliers as well as getting show information to area newspapers. Art Hazboun, our webmaster, kept our show website up to date with important information about our show as well as sending out hundreds of s to people interested in hearing about our show. Bobbie Davison and her fellow artists, all students of famed watercolorist George Lin, added to our show with their lovely artwork. Nick Braemer and Don Goss did an excellent job of informing our guests about orchid care and culture with Orchids-R-Easy talks. They did a wonderful job of letting people know that orchid growing can be easy. Thank you to everyone who cleaned up their plants and brought them in for judging and everyone who worked at our show. People, who attended, saw that we have an outstanding society with friendly, hardworking members. The Spring Show is over and planning has already begun on the Fall Show, which is September 20th and 21st at the South Coast Botanic Garden. Marla Corey March 2014 South Bay Orchid Society page 4
