1 The INFLORESCENCE Orchids for Amateurs South Bay Orchid Society, Inc. P.O. BOX 3793 Torrance, CA Cym. Valley Olympic Rose Grown by Bob Fisher Our February 15, 2013 Guest Speaker is Winn Winmaw Orchids from the World Conference Show Singapore, Cambodia, & Malaysia Winn was born in Shan State, in eastern Burma, where Cymbidium lowianum, Vanda coerulea, and Paphiopedilum charlesworthii are found abundantly in the wild. The first orchid that Winn collected from the forest floor was a Dendrobium species when he was seven years old. After this he began taking care of orchids in his family s garden. As an undergraduate studying physics at the University of Rangoon, Winn was a member of the Department of Botany s orchid society. Later he lived in Japan for four years for further study and training. In 1988, he moved to the United States and settled in Orange County. Eventually he began collecting and growing orchids here. Today he has a large orchid collection, many of which are Vandaceous orchids, which he grows in a shade house and greenhouse. He has been a member of the Newport Harbor Orchid Society since Recently Winn has made several trips back to Burma and has explored orchids in nature. He will share with us one of his recent trips. We will meet as usual at Mimi's cafe at 5:30 for the speaker's dinner if you wish to join us. Cal Orchids will provide the plants for the raffle table. 2 From the President s Desk I hope 2013 is off to a good start for everyone and that your orchids are preparing for their spring bloom. Our annual show and sale at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center is in just a little over a month, and we are looking for a good group of plants to display. Start getting your plants in shape. Plan to bring your family and friends to the show; it is a good way to introduce people to the society and the many varieties of orchids. We are always looking for volunteers to help at the show, so please plan to give a couple of hours of your time. It is an easy way to give back to the Society, as this is our big money maker for the year. There will be signup sheets again at this month s meeting. It is a great way to get to know other members and as a side benefit, you get in free to the show on the day that you work. At our recent board meeting we talked about the plant raffles held at each month s meeting and considered raising the price of the tickets. Over the last year the Society has lost an average of almost $100 per month. The plant tables are a wonderful resource for adding variety to your collection at a very reasonable price. The board decided to postpone the decision to raise the price of the tickets and instead agreed to promote sales over the next few months to see if we can increase the participation. Please plan to bring a little extra money to this month s meeting to buy some extra tickets so that the Society doesn t continue to lose money on this nice benefit for all of us. Another annual event coming up is the bus trip to Santa Barbara to the annual show along with visits to orchid growers. If you have never gone, you have missed a special event. The orchid displays are absolutely gorgeous and the trip is a lot of fun. Again, it is a fun way to meet members and find some new additions to your collection. Signups have started and the bus is filling up fast, so don t delay! Charlotte Morrison President for February Get Your Raffle Tickets! Win Those Plants! February 2013 South Bay Orchid Society page 2
3 South Bay Orchid Society Spring Show and Sale March 2 nd and 3 rd, 2013 Our spring show is coming soon and planning is well underway. Vendors are signing up and publicity is getting out, but to make this show a success your society needs your help. We have members who have volunteered to be committee chairs and they need you to sign up to help. Set-up: Takes place on Friday afternoon beginning at 1:00PM. This involves setting up and arranging tables as well as draping the display tables. We will also need people to help bring things from storage on Friday morning. Call Ron Henry at (310) Host and Hostess: People are needed throughout the show hours to talk to our guests and answer questions they may have. This position is also important for security. You need to make sure no one touches the plants or walks off with one. (Plant theft is a serious problem at some shows.) This position also includes the plant hotel table and the ticket sales area. Call Kayo Libiano at (310) to volunteer on Saturday and Charles Brown at (310) to volunteer on Sunday. Food: Lots of food is needed to feed our hungry volunteers and vendors throughout the show. We have been short on food for the last few shows so please bring a casserole, salad, fried chicken, etc. when you come to work your shift. If you are bringing food on Sunday, it needs to be there by 11:30AM. Call Joanne Green at (310) Plant Registration: Registration will take place on Friday in the show room beginning at 4:00PM and ending at 9:00PM. I hope everyone will bring in blooming plants for judging. Don t be shy about putting your plants in the show. All we ask is that they have been in your possession for a minimum of three months and be free of pests and disease. We will have AOS and CSA judging for those of you with exceptional plants in bloom. The classification list is available on our website with the registration slips. Sign up sheets will be available at the February meeting or you can call the show chair directly. Volunteering a few hours of your time is a great way to get to know your fellow society members and we always have a good time. Call me if you have any questions about the show or the volunteer positions. Marla Corey, show chair (310) February 2013 South Bay Orchid Society page 3
