1 1 American Daffodil Society Pacific Region Newsletter SPRING 2018 American Daffodil Society President: Nancy Tackett Executive Director: Frank Nyikos Pacific Region Vice President 3 rd Term Jon Kawaguchi mogeura@aol.com Pacific Region Directors 2019 Steve Hampson shhampson@earthlink.net 2020 Barbara Weber bbwdafff@peark.org 2021 Rosemary Scholz scholzrail@charter.net National Nominating Committee Pacific Region: Harold Koopowitz paph2@earthlink.net Standing Committees Internet Services: Ben Blake bblake@tachettblake.com Dafftube Administrator: Kirby Fong kfong@alumni.caltech.edu Hybridizer Committee Harold Koopowitz paph2@earthlink.net World Daffodil Council Representative: Bob Spotts Robert_ Spotts@comcast.com The Spring 2018 Pacific Region Newsletter will feature three daffodil shows that I attended in California: the 48 th Annual Bay Area Daffodil Show (Pacific Regional Show) was hosted by the Northern California Daffodil Society and the Alden Lane Nursery on March 3 and 4 at the Alden Lane Nursery, Livermore, CA; the 23 rd Annual Mother Lode Daffodil Show was hosted by the Northern California Daffodil Society and Ironstone Vineyards on March 10 and 11 at the Heritage Room, Ironstone Vineyards, Murphys, CA; and the 43 rd Annual Daffodil Show hosted by the Fortuna Garden Club on March 24 and 25 at the River Lodge Conference Center, Fortuna, CA. If you have not attended one of the six shows held in the Pacific Region, I encourage you to attend. If you have never brought daffodil blooms to be shown at a show, bring them as there are members who are more than willing to assist you on how to stage them. I remember the first time I brought flowers to the Livermore Show in Bob Spotts told me to bring them the day before the show (Friday afternoon / evening) and he showed me on how to stage them. It was a very fun and rewarding experience. I will be releasing another newsletter in the Summer 2018 and will feature the 2018 National Daffodil Convention held in Franklin, Tennessee; and hopefully the other three shows held in the Pacific Region. If any member would like to share any information and / or photographs in the next newsletter, please contact me: Jon Kawaguchi at mogeura@aol.com. I m particularly interested in photographs of members of the local chapters who participate in the daffodil shows and other events in the Pacific Region. Jon Kawaguchi All photographs in this newsletter were taken by Jon Kawaguchi

2 2 48 th ANNUAL BAY AREA DAFFODIL SHOW, LIVERMORE CALIFORNIA The 48 th Annual Bay Area Daffodil Show was held at the Arden Lane Nursery in Livermore, CA from Saturday to Sunday, March 3 and 4, I was not sure how many blooms I would be able to bring to the show as I was in Phoenix, AR for Major League Baseball spring training. I did not return home until Tuesday evening (February 27). On Wednesday, I discovered that I had a good number of blooms to bring and began to cut blooms and put them in the refrigerator. On Thursday, it rained most of the day and cut a few more blooms, and Friday, I was able to cut a few more blooms to bring to the show. I usually try to leave my home (Alameda, CA) no later than 2:30 pm as I try to beat the commute traffic to Livermore. Livermore is 30 miles away but depending on the weather and commute traffic; it usually takes between 60 to 90 minutes to get there. When I arrived at the Arden Lane Nursery, Kirby Fong and Bob Spotts were there. Bob Spotts staging his flowers Bob brought lots of his viridiflorus seedlings. If you never seen a daffodil with green color, this is one of the shows to see them! Kirby Fong brings all of the show properties and related materials to the show and stored in a local storage center in Livermore. Kirby Fong setting up the Livermore Show

Entries may consist of all standards or all miniatures. This new class is named the Robert Spotts Ribbon.

10 10 23 rd ANNUAL MOTHER LODE DAFFODIL SHOW, MURPHYS CALIFORNIA The 23 rd Annual Mother Lode Daffodil Show was held at Ironstone Vineyards, Murphys, CA from Saturday and Sunday, March 10 and 11. In prior years, this show was held during the weekend that Irish Day is held in Murphys. In 2018, the show was held a week prior to Irish Day. In years past, there was a week break between the show in Livermore and Murphys but this year the Murphys Show was the next weekend. I was surprised to discover again that I had a good number of blooms to bring to the show. Ben Blake (left), Nancy Tackett (center), and Bob Spotts (right) prior to the start of judging the show Initially there was concern on the number of visitors that would attend this show since it was the weekend before Irish Day. But after the judging was completed, there was a constant flow of visitors to see the show. All of the growers participating told me that they had a good number of blooms.

18 18 23 rd ANUAL MOTHER LODE DAFFODIL SHOW, MURPHYS CALIFORNIA Snow near Arnold, California After judging and lunch on Saturday, my wife, Frances, my daughter and her friend, and me decided to visit the Calaveras Big Trees State Park near Arnold, California. It s only a short distance from Murphys. The Calaveras Big Trees State Park was created in 1931 to preserve the North Grove of giant sequoias. As we approached Arnold, California, snow began to appear and just when we were a couple of miles from the Calaveras Big Trees State Park, there was more snow and we decided to stop and turn around. We did not have snow chains and did not want to get stuck in the snow.

19 19 23 rd ANUAL MOTHER LODE DAFFODIL SHOW, MURPHYS CALIFORNIA Saturday Evening Dinner at the Alchemy Café, Murphys Left to right: Frances Kawaguchi, Jon Kawaguchi, Ben Blake, Nancy Tackett, Hanneke Elings, Bert Elings, Bob Spotts, Jan Moyers, and Kirby Fong After a long but fun day of staging blooms, judging, and clerking the show, most of the members who attended the show had dinner at the Alchemy Café in Murphys on Saturday evening. We all had a wonderful time, good conversation, and excellent food. Thanks to Bert Elings for planning the Saturday night dinner.

20 20 43 rd ANNUAL DAFFODIL SHOW, FORTUNA CALIFORNIA The 43 rd Annual Daffodil Show sponsored by the Fortuna Garden Club was held from Saturday and Sunday, March 24 and 25 at the beautiful River Lodge Conference Center, Fortuna, CA. In addition to the daffodil show, there were artistic arrangements staged by the girl scouts, high school students from Fortuna High School, and members of the Fortuna Garden Club. There was a two-week break between the Murphys how and the Fortuna show. Right after the Murphys show, I did not have many blooms (but later in the week after the Murphys show), it began to warm up and my miniature daffodils became to bloom. I began to wonder why I had so many blooms and came to the conclusion that last year, there was ample rainfall during last year s growing season and I attributed this to the marked increase in my flowers blooming. Bob Spotts staging his flowers upon my arrival at the River Lodge Conference Center My wife and I left Alameda, CA around 10:30 am. Fortuna is about 4.5 hours north of us. It rained off and on as we drove through Santa Rosa, Ukiah, Hopland, and Richardson Grove State Park (said to have the 9 th largest tree of all remaining Coast Redwoods) and finally to Fortuna. When we arrived at the River Lodge Conference Center, Bob Spotts were there, as well as, members of the Fortuna Garden Club. Maria Krenek and her Fortuna Garden Club members were busy setting up the show. This was Maria Krenek s first time as chair of this show. Maria and Garden club helpers did a wonderful job in getting the show ready. Kirby Fong arrived about an hour after I arrived.

28 28 43 rd ANNUAL DAFFODIL SHOW, FORTUNA CALIFORNIA The Annual Saturday evening dinner was held at the Hotel Ivanhoe Restaurant and Saloon in Ferndale. Ferndale is about 8 miles northwest of Fortuna. Again, there was wonderful conversation and great food. Jan Moyers (right) thanking Maria Krenek for a wonderful show Hotel Ivanhoe Restaurant and Saloon, Ferndale, CA Upon reflection on what miniature daffodils had bloomed for me for the three 2018 shows I attended, I think my season was a bit off as I had blooms for the Fortuna show that I normally bring and other flowers that blooms a couple of weeks earlier. A couple of weeks after the Fortuna show, (first and second week of April), I had a good number of miniature flowers in bloom that are usually ready for the Fortuna show. Normally, by mid-april, I only have a few very late cultivars flowering. Photographs of the winners were taken by Kirby Fong and the show results for each of the three shows (covered in this newsletter) can be seen on DaffNet at
