5 OdD bitz Orchids & Evil Weevils I recently found some damage to leaves on one of my Catasetum orchids. The damage was on all the leaves, and consisted of small, light patches on the which appeared to have been eaten by a dreaded insect of some kind. The patches were not eaten right through the leaf, but just the top and bottom parts, leaving the skeleton structure in the centre of the leaf. Scattered around the leaf were small, black droppings. (That s poop) The culprit was not in evidence, but I had presumed that it was a very small caterpillar. After very careful examination of all the leaves, I could not find the varmint and was starting to feel that the culprit must be hiding in the media and that the plant would need to be repotted in an effort to find it. All my poking and examination must have disturbed the culprit as he soon appeared in the open on a leaf. (Not sure where he had been hiding) He was not a caterpillar, but a weevil. Specifically Orchidophilus aterrimus (See mug shot below) Needless to say, I dispatched this weevil post haste, but alas, the damage is already done. Please be on the lookout for his relatives amongst your orchids where they are prone to take up residence and eat you out of orchids and greenhouse. (House & home doesn t sound right.) Orchid weevils were first observed in Hawaii at an orchid house in Honolulu in Accidentally introduced from Asia, Orchid weevil larvae and adults have chewing mouthparts. They feed on orchid flowers and on tender tissues at the growing points of orchid plants. These tissues can be stems, leaves, and exposed roots. The adult females chew feeding holes into pseudobulbs or other plant parts, crawl in, and deposit eggs. After hatching, the grubs continue feeding, creating chambers suitable for pupation. Pupation, or the transformation from larva to adult, lasts 16 days. Total development time from egg to adult is about 5 months. Adults live 9 months to a year. So be warned!!
