This Month s Meeting: Wednesday, August 28, 2013 In the Wausau Airport Terminal 7:00 pm, after the last Hamburger Night of the summer. Last month s meeting minutes: EAA CHAPTER 640, HAYMEADOW FLYERS, INC. July 12, 2013 Bob Mohr s Hangar on the Wausau Airport Meeting: President Bob Mohr called the July meeting to order at 7:10 pm. 29 members and 1 guest were present. Bob asked for corrections or additions to the June meeting minutes, as printed in the July Haymeadow Flyer. No one had any, so a motion was made by Terry Oestriech to accept the June minutes as printed. Larry Sperberg seconded Terry s motion, and the motion passed. Bob asked for corrections or additions to the June Treasurer s Report, as printed in the July Haymeadow Flyer. There were none, so Lyman Hatz made a motion to accept them as printed. Larry Sperberg seconded this motion and it also passed. Bob made a correction to the Haymeadow Flyer, however. The June issue reported that Chapter 640 had donated $25,000 to the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame Scholarship Fund, and also $25,000 to the Archie Towle Scholarship Fund. This was in error. Chapter 640 had actually donated $10,000 to each of the funds. New Members: Keith Kocourek, who was at the meeting, joined the chapter. Keith recently funded Jessica Cox s speaking tour of Wausau East High School, Newman Catholic High School, Wausau

2 West High School and Mosinee High School, as well as donating many items that adorn the AirVenture grounds at Oshkosh. Keith said that his is now on the Board of Directors of EAA. Keith owns and flies a fully restored Waco ZPF-7, a Cub Crafters Super Cub and a Beechcraft King Air. Guests: Karen Winters was present. Project Reports: Darlene Unertl and family showed a video presentation of the Zenith CH 750 kit being built by the Aviators By Design volunteers in Iola. She said that they were able to purchase the finishing kit due to the donation that Chapter 640 made to them. Health Report: The members have been concerned about Junior Ricci s health recently. Junior was at the meeting looking good and, he said, feeling good after he recently had one of his heart valves replaced. John Woods Challenge: Dave Conrad, who set up the John Woods Challenge, explained the time, layout and rules. (See below for he results.) Young Eagles Coordinator Request: Syd Cohen, EAA Chapter 640 Young Eagles Coordinator, explained that he has been having an extremely hard time getting volunteers to fly Young Eagles. It s like pulling teeth, he said. He mentioned that other chapters seem to be flying Young Eagles quite often, but Chapter 640 does not fly many. He told the members to look in EAA s Calendar of Events, which he reprints each month in the Haymeadow Flyer. He said that he thought that the price of fuel may be a factor to a lot of pilots. He said that the Langlade County Airport has held the Antigo Fall Fly-In for quite a few years and each year they fly over 100 kids in the Young Eagles program. They generally have about 8 pilots flying, and the FBO gives them free fuel. Syd said that the only way he could get pilots to fly kids at the 2012 Harold Straw Memorial Young Eagle Flights in Merrill was to give them free fuel. Syd requested that $5,000 be transferred from the Bob Payzer Gift Fund to the EAA Chapter 640 Harold Straw Young Eagles Fund so he could offer free fuel to Young Eagles pilots. After a lengthy discussion, his request was turned down. Memorial: Wayne Podeweltz mother recently passed away, and Syd sent flowers in the name of the Chapter for her funeral. Wayne and Dana thanked the Chapter with a card and a picture of the flowers. Hamburger Nights: John Chmiel announced that 19 planes and over 100 people attended the Hamburger Night at the Wausau Airport on July planes showed up for the Hamburger Night at Stevens Point Airport on June 19 and 23 planes attended the Hamburger Night at Medford on July 3. Next week s Hamburger Night will be at Stevens Point on Wednesday. It appears to be very successful, John said. In fact, two other groups of airports and now holding their own Hamburger Nights. Northwoods airports are on Thursday nights and eastern Wisconsin airports are on Tuesday nights. Next week s Northwoods airport will be at Tomahawk on Thursday night. Musky Day Fly-In: Musky Day Fly-In at Boulder Junction will be held on Sunday, Aug. 11. In the past our Chapter held it s August meeting there, but it is thought that it would be better to hold the meeting more locally. We will hold our August meeting in the terminal of the Wausau Airport August 28 after the last Hamburger Night of the summer. Miscellaneous comments from members: Keith Koscourek We could have a get-together at Oshkosh and tour the Kermit Weeks hangar. He would arrange that. Dave Conrad We could bring speakers in to speak at the meetings and fund their fee and expenses with money from the Bob Payzer Gift Fund. Larry Sperberg The Shawano Fly-Out will be held Saturday morning, August 3. Larry Sperberg again Jim Kleman and Larry just finished building Jim s Vans RV-12 project. They are waiting for the Fed to inspect and sign it off. Because it is an ELSA, there is only a 5-hour test flight time. Jim painted it orange and blue, and they installed a Skyview glass panel. Lyman Hatz Thousands of non-aviation people are on the grounds of the Wausau Airport during the Balloon Rally each year, and we always ignore them. We need to show our presence here, tell them what EAA is all about, display some airplanes and hand out brochures. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm, with a motion by Larry Sperberg, Terry Oestreich, Lyman Hatz and Gary Schulz. It was felt that no second was needed.

Dave Conrad presents at AirVenture Dave Conrad, Technical Counselor for EAA Chapter 640 was invited to give a presentation at the EAA air show on Monday morning about his planes. The focus was mostly on the Tailwind though. He covered building and test flying it. He said it was great fun! He was told he had 100 to 125 people attend this presentation. He said it was nice to be able to fly it down there on Sunday and have them move it to a hangar for the night. Monday he spent the morning answering questions and making his presentation.

4 Ercoupes at AirVenture

5 On July 27, for the 21 st year, Syd again led the flight of Ercoupes in to AirVenture. We now gather at the Watertown Airport, due to the friendliness of the airport staff and the close proximity of the motels and restaurants. Thirteen Ercoupes showed up at Watertown this year. Syd gave an extensive pre-flight briefing of the inbound procedure and we departed Watertown at 11:15, flying in trail. We flew to Ripon, followed the railroad tracks and were directed to Runway 36 at Oshkosh. Two rows of parking was already reserved for us in the Type Club Parking Area. We filled 1 1/3 rows, but more Ercoupes arrived later, so most of the two rows were filled. The Ercoupe Maintenance Forum on Monday afternoon was well attended as usual. Many questions were asked. John Wright Sr. and Syd conducted the forum. 50 Ercoupers attended the Ercoupe Banquet, held on Tuesday evening at LaSure s Catering Hall. An auction was held to benefit the Fred E. Weick Scholarship Fund at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University for aeronautical engineering students. We raised $540. The rest of the week was very enjoyable, with nice cool breezes every day. Hundreds of people stopped by the rows of Ercoupes to admire and ask questions. We are now gearing up for 2015, which is the 75 th anniversary of the Ercoupe. We will hold our National Ercoupe Convention in Sheboygan Falls, WI, and then fly in to AirVenture from there. We are hoping for at least 75 Ercoupes that year. John Woods Challenge July 13, 2013 First place in the inaugural John Wood Challenge Cup race this summer went to John Chmiel, who came within one minute and eleven seconds of his predicted time to fly from Wausau to Antigo to Merrill and back to Wausau. Tom Turner, who placed third overall, was actually closer to his predicted time, however he went about five seconds over, which is against the rules of the race. Bob Mohr, winner of the Grimm trophy in May's "Landings For Lunches," finished in second place. The John Wood Challenge Cup trophy is on display in the lobby of Wausau Flying Service. The race honors a former manager of the Wausau Downtown Airport who was a famous coast-to-coast air racer in the late 1920s.
