Kregel, 82, died Monday, January 27, 2014 under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Mount View Care Center, Wausau. Ben was born August 25, 1931 in Wausau, son of the late Harvey and Mary (Davis) Kregel. On December 27, 1953 Ben married Mary Kuntz at Trinity Lutheran Church, Wausau. She survives. He worked at the American Can Company as a millwright, and later for the Department of Natural Resources in Tomahawk. Ben was an avid fisherman and hunter. One of his bucks is recorded as a Boone and Crocket trophy. As a teenager, Ben earned his private pilot's license by helping out at the Wausau airport to earn flying time. Still as a teenager, Ben was selected to represent the local chapter of Civil Air Patrol Cadets to travel to Switzerland and learned to fly gliders in the Alps. Later he was active in the Experimental Aircraft Association and QB's. He eventually earned a commercial pilot's rating. He served his country as a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force in Germany and Morocco in the early 1950's. Ben was active in politics and volunteered to fly candidates like Rep. Dave Obey during campaigns. WHAT OUR MEMBERS ARE BUILDING/RESTORING ERIC BERENS TRAVEL AIR FIRST FLIGHT IN 75 YEARS Eric Berens of Stevens Point, Wis.(member of EAA Chapter 640 and EAA Chapter 431 in Brodhead, WI) celebrated the restoration of his 1929 Travel Air with its first flight (since October 24, 1937) on Friday, November 15, The following is from Eric: NC 666H is a 1929 Travel Air, Model 2000 with a Curtiss OXX-6 engine, dual ignition, liquid cooled, 102 hp, a 102 Ole Fahlin propeller, 30 5 inch wheels with mechanical brakes. Restored by Kent McMakin at the Brodhead Airport. Chad Willie helped with the engine. It is painted in its original colors Travel Air Blue, with silver wings. Original period instruments are installed and the interior is duplicated from original fabric. Peter Bryn, a long time, well known Travel Air flyer and collector of Dazey, N.D. owned and soloed in this aircraft on October 24, 1936 and it remained with his family from whom I got it. Terry Bryn, Pete s son, reviewed his Dad s logbook noting that NC666H s last flight was October 24, So last Friday s flight was its first flight in 76 years and 22 days. Tom Hegy of Hartford, WI did the test flight, reporting that it handled well on the ground and in flight! After a debrief from Tom I flew it around the Brodhead Airport for 40 minutes in it while trying to stop smiling! The picture of N666H flying is Tom Hegy flying, the one on the ground is me. Congratulations, Eric. How about flying it to our May Chapter 640 meeting at Winch s grass strip?
