2 President s Perspective Hello all. This update comes to you at the end of March and brings with it more cold and snow. I can no longer wait to get started on my aviation projects. These include the Chapter s simulator, my Super and several other smaller ones I have in the works. Cold or not, I m forging ahead. I will need to set a date and time to get some volunteer Chapter members together to evaluate the damage to our Chapter plane. We will review options to strengthen the wooden airframe, replace broken or missing parts and re -paint. These all need to be completed by our AirVenture work day. Since our next meeting is scheduled for SATURDAY APRIL 13 th at the Hartford Municipal Airport, we can plan to take a drive to my hanger after that meeting to initiate a game plan to move forward. Please attend if you d like to be involved. Work continues on creating more opportunities for our Chapter members through local resources for first flights, primary flight training, transition training and type specific training. I have struck a conversation with Dana Osmanski with Cub Air Flight. Cub Air operates out of Hartford Municipal and provides all of the aforementioned opportunities and much more. We will work to put together more details of these resources and share them in an upcoming issue of our newsletter and website. I look forward to helping providing Chapter 1 members with more local options for discovery flights, ground and flight training in LSA or GA categories and beyond. I d like to thank all of the Chapter 1 members that were able to attend the 20 th anniversary of the Wisconsin Light Aviation Safety Seminar up in Oshkosh last month. We had a great turnout in spite of some bad weather the night before. Our speaker line up and topics kept everyone s attention and interest focused. The door prizes and big ticket items were also a big hit as usual. Next year s seminar isslated to be even better thanks to the hard work of the Seminar Board members and our awesome sponsors! Please plan to join us next year in Oshkosh. You will not be disappointed. Work continues on the revised Ultralight grounds layout for AirVenture A new 10 foot fence, paved service road and drainage ditch will be installed around the airport perimeter by this year s event date. This will cut off some Ultralight campground space and aircraft parking if we don t rearrange our current grounds layout. A preliminary drawing has been submitted and we ll gain access to the grounds early this spring to measure and mark the new plan. There are many other grounds changes coming this year as well. Some of these apply to the types and cost of food and beverages available on the grounds, relocation of a few key landmark buildings and added attractions. I just read last week that EAA is adding a second night air show this year due to its immense popularity. Stay tuned for more updates as time ticks by. Warmer weather is coming. Soon it ll be time to do those springtime pre-flights. You should start with doing one on yourself. Once you are sure that YOU are ready to fly, do a thorough pre-flight on your aircraft. Replace that old gas in the tank. Squeeze those fuel lines. Pull on the brackets, pulleys, knobs, levers, wires and wings. Make sure that you didn t leave off on some unfinished business on the airplane when that cold winter weather set in last year. Get out there and fly but do it the smart, safe way. Here is the list of proposed FAA Contract Tower Closures set to start on April 7th due to the recent Sequester cuts to the budget: CWA - CENTRAL WISCONSIN- MOSINEE WI EAU - CHIPPEWA VALLEY RGNL - EAU CLAIRE ENW - KENOSHA RGNL - KENOSHA WI JVL - SOUTHERN WI RGNL - JANESVILLE WI LSE - LA CROSSE MUNI - LA CROSSE WI MWC - TIMMERMAN - MILWAUKEE WI OSH - WITTMAN RGNL - OSHKOSH WI UES - WAUKESHA COUNTY - WAUKESHA WI If you currently fly out of any one of these airports, please keep up on the status of your Control Tower. You will be flying and communication via CTAF only in class E airspace once that tower closes. I doubt any of these closures will be permanent but we won t know for sure for some time to come. Here are a few upcoming local events you may wish to attend to get your fly juices flowing: Saturday, April 6 th EAA Chapter 1158 Pancake Breakfast (7 10AM) West Bend WI. See the EAA Calendar of Events web page for more info. Saturday, April 13 th Steve Wittman Birthday Fly- In Breakfast (7:30 11AM) Wittman Airport Terminal All you can eat pancakes! 3 Safety Seminar Review. It was another interes ng Saturday at the Safety Seminar. I am not sure why I s ll have a lot of interest in the Safety Seminar, being that I have pre y much hung up being a pilot due to old age and medical condi ons. This is about as good of an excuse that I can muster up at this me. Being that I have loved avia on all my life, whether as a pilot or just being around airplanes, provokes me to a end these mee ngs in trying to keep up with some of the changes in avia on safety. Hey, if there is no other reason for me to a end these safety events, selling ckets with Suzy Brown has been fun. Suzy always seems to out sell me by adver sing free hugs to those who buy ckets from her. I try to convince prospec ve raffle cket buyers to buy from me by claiming I have the winning ckets. Well my claims that I have the winning ckets were proven when I won the raffle for a free 3,000 glider flight. WOW!! I am looking forward to that, but I want to wait un l the weather is a lot warmer to fully enjoy the ride. Rumor has it that the heaters in those gliders really don't produce much heat, except when you re taking lessons and errors by the student pilot causes more warmth in the cockpit while listening to the screams of his instructor I am not taking any lessons, so I will wait for the warmer natural weather rather then an over heated cockpit by my taking lessons. Think Summer. - by Ed Haberl Flying the frozen lakes in spring (from cover). Every year I look forward to that late spring me when the snow is melted off the lakes leaving unlimited landing areas for our li le planes. On Thursday 3/28/13, I met up with John Heller and his famous "Di lefutz" for some low flying, thrilling, frozen lake scenery in Jefferson County. We landed on several lakes together to compare notes, and laugh at the ice fisherman. The weather was perfect and the ice was OK for landing most anywhere, except where springs were present or snow had piled up, we just kept our eyes open for where the lakes were heaving and the drilled holes le by the fisherman. My favorite me is when the lakes are like glass and no snow is on top, it makes for some thrilling landings in even the lightest winds. - by Tom McCarthy Page 3
