2 President s Perspective... EVENT RECAP PIONEER ULTRALIGHT DAY We couldn t have asked for better weather for our annual trek to Oshkosh this year. The clear blue skys and mild forecast brought 9 pilots to our Dodge County Airport rendezvous. Everyone was on time for the 8:30am briefing before our 38 mile flight to Pioneer. We welcomed DAN FELIX and BOB LEWIS to the long list of first time flyers to Oshkosh. We departed an hour before our scheduled arrival slot and made our way north to the microwave tower to begin the left hand circle holding pattern. It s at that point when all pilots have arrived that we need to call in to Pioneer for permission to come on in. That s also where my radio failed. Thanks Tom Boos and Pat Spanaus for picking up where I left off! Tom contacted the Ground Ops at Pioneer, got the runway heading and headed for the field. Everyone did a very nice job of keeping their separation and landing safely on the correct runway. Thanks guys! After everyone got their aircraft tied down, doughnuts devoured and said their Hello s to fellow flyers, we were briefed on the days activities. The event results are nothing to write home about but we sure had fun trying to get that ever elusive traveling trophy back. I mention to our group that we need more practice every year but am as guilty as the rest for not following my own advice. We did manage to beat at least one of the four participating Chapters for a THIRD PLACE finish overall. I was a little embarrassed that the Chapter 41 team representing Oshkosh, which consisted of one pilot, beat us as well. Nice going Timm Bogenhagen, we needed that I m sure fun was had by all that attended (except maybe Pat Spanaus, I ll let HIM tell you why). After the flying was over we had our dinner catered in the hanger and the awards (and good hearted ribbing) were handed out, it was time to hit the wild blue yonder for home. I d like to thank those volunteers that made the road trip to Oshkosh and helped with ground support. There are too many to name here but we appreciate all that you do to make our trip more comfortable. I would also like to congratulate the Chapter 1 pilots that came away with a trophy this year. John Heller took a FIRST PLACE in the Torpedo Run. Tom Boos (Fort Atkinson) took a 2nd place in the Bomb Drop AND a 3 rd place in the Spot Landing competition.. Congratulations guys! For the rest of us, there s always next year. LONGEST DAYS FLY IN FOOD, and LOTS OF IT! That was the theme for our first visit to McDermott Airport out in Sullivan WI. The weekend was hot and humid with the potential of BAD weather each afternoon. For those of us that camped there, it was all we could do to keep cool in between eating and some flying. We had a nice turnout for our group dinner Saturday. Everyone brought a dish or donation to the table. We certainly didn t run short of vittles (THANKS CANDY!) Bill Genteman and several Chapter members moved to this vast airport just west of Sullivan after the close of Aero Park. It s relatively unused most of the time and has the longest runway we ve ever seen. I now need to replace my tires due to the long taxi trips up and down that hard surface runway. I think everyone was impressed with the amenities that come with the use of that airport. There s a lot of room to roam on the airport grounds and we had the use of nice cool bathrooms (with showers) for our event. If you re ever in the Sullivan neighborhood, stop in and say hello to Bill and the gang. There s no lack of hospitality at McDermott! I hope we get invited back next year for our Longest Days Fly In. NEXT UP OSHKOSH That s right, our AirVenture Work Day is coming up Saturday, July 16 th. We sure could use a hand getting the Ultralight area cleaned up and organized for the 2005 convention. Please see the map and directions insert in this newsletter for more detailed info. Hope you can join us! See you all this coming Tuesday, July 12 th at 7:30pm at the Lakeview Banquet Center lower level. Steve Magdic Page 2

3 Virtually Flying By James Hoeppner July 1 st, 2005 It seems like another month has flown by without taking me along for the ride. I could probably count the hours logged on one hand. A few hours were flown beating against a stiff crosswind to the Fort Atkinson Breakfast Fly-out and back. Another was squeezed in late on the Sunday after I returned from the Great War Fly-in (in Gardner, Kansas) on Father s Day weekend. And I added one more last weekend during a brief weather lull on Sunday to the Longest Days Fly-in at McDermott Field in Sullivan. The minimal flying hours should have meant I was working feverishly on the Eindecker, but the only sign of fever was the mass quantities of sweat that appeared anytime I attempted to put a little time into cutting and filing and drilling and rivet pulling. I reached a point midmonth where I decided to hold off actually riveting anything together till I could check out some of the other E-III projects, and talk with the designer at the Gardner fly-in. Unfortunately, I missed one of my favorite fly-ins (Ultralight Days at Pioneer Airport) to drive down to Kansas City on Friday night (and Saturday morning). It was a long haul but worth the hours spent and sleep lost. I stopped at another Eindecker builder s hangar in Illinois to look over his almost ready-to-fly E-III. It was the same one I d seen at St. Louis last fall, and we spent nearly three hours going over anything and everything he could think of to help me avoid the many little pitfalls he d discovered during his three years of building. The last time I heard from him he had finished taxi tests (and a few short crow hops) and was preparing for final inspection and the first flight. Though the Gardner fly-in was only one day (Saturday) to give everyone time to get their planes home (some from nearly as far as I had driven!) it was well worth the trip. There was another E-III project almost ready to cover, so I got to see how someone else had attempted to solve some of the same problems I had, and some I have yet to face. We talked about engine choices and it occurred to me that we all must think alike. We d like to put a 4-stroke on but we re not sure about the weight and power and reliability issues of the half-vw. We all wish there was a small scale radial or an actual rotary available (not the Mazda type, though that might just work, hmmm?) but most of us wind up with the already established Rotax 503. Not a single one is exactly to plans (such as they are) but that s something we have in common with every experimental ever built. We all figured we d have the little Fokker up and running by Oshkosh (or Dayton or St.Louis or Gardner) but hadn t really considered that it might not be the same year (or two or three) we started. But all the other flying planes attending served up evidence that someday we d be flying in formation with them (or firing a few imaginary rounds at them). All but the E-III in tubes and a scratch built Spad and a nearly done scale WWI bomber were flying all day during the fly-in. Sometimes the fly-bys were punctuated by the realistic rattat-tats of the infantry re-enactors anti-aircraft gun, powered I believe by propane and a spark plug. There were old cars, including a beautiful (Model A?) racer. And an RC flying group put on a pretty impressive demonstration, including the now classic foot off the deck prop hover. I met a lot of friendly folk and made several connections that should come in handy in the future. I stayed for the Bar-B-Q Saturday night, and then headed for home, following the Dawn Patrol caravan (of six planes on trailers) out of town for a while before they turned a different direction toward home. Continued on Page 4 Page 3

4 Continued from page 3 Except for a few catnaps on the way down I hadn t slept since Thursday night so I didn t plan on getting too far toward home before looking for a motel. When I ran over an already squashed deer on the highway around 10:00 it seemed like a good time to stop for the night. The next day I stopped back at the Illinois airport where the completed E-III was kept. They were hosting a pancake breakfast but I missed it by a half hour. I made it home that afternoon and managed to get in a breezy evening flight to Amy s Airfield and back. The early part of the week was a busy one, but I finally spent some constructive time back on the project before another busy weekend (including the Longest Days Fly-in) and a business trip this week. In one 3-hour span last Thursday I pulled around seventy 3/16 rivets! Needless to say I ve since been considering the purchase of a compressor and air rivet gun. There s still a box full of those big suckers left to pull and even the extension tubes I eventually added didn t keep my hands from getting sore and bruised. Hopefully I can spend more time on it this holiday weekend and get the airframe closer to completion, assuming the weather cooperates and isn t too perfect to pass up a flight, or two or three. On the Video Front... July 1, 2005 Not much new this month except the news that we now have two prop tachs! Dan Eales was able to repair the old one. Thanks Dan. He reports that it s best not to store the battery(ies) in the tach so it will be policy to loan out the tachs without batteries. Remember to remove your battery(ies) when returning the tach (or they ll be considered as donations to the club). Steve Magdic will be in charge of one and I will keep one with the Library. FYI: The Library tach is already checked out. Many thanks to Bob and Geri Zaretzke. The missing Yeager book couldn t be located so they donated another one! As always, tools, videos, books and CDs can be checked out and returned at meetings or you may arrange for pick-up or drop-off at my house. A limited selection of items will be available at each meeting so you re better off reserving a specific book or video for pick-up. Call or me and I ll bring your selection to the meeting. Current club tools include a fabric tester, Rotax fan wrench, prop balancer and the two prop tachs (contact Steve Magdic for these). Tech Counselor Pat Spannus has a wing rotating mechanism and an HVLP sprayer available. Please try to return items by the next meeting, so others can have the chance to view or use them. Microlite Library James Hoeppner reports we have a new prop tach available for loan to members. OLD BUSINESS: LEAF Tour On 5/14 was well attended with about 17 planes and 19 by car. It was well worth the trip. Thanks Bob Lewis for setting it up! Frank Luke Fly-in/Camp Out At Hartford had so-so weather. Had a good showing of campers, and got 16 YE flights in (Thanks to all involved!). There were a few complaints at first because not everyone at HXF knew we were coming, kids were running around, campers too close to hangers, and stuff like that. Everything was resolved quickly, and by the end of the weekend, friendships were being formed. Happy to report, the weekend was incident free. Ft. Atkinson Breakfast June 4 had about 26 people and 4 to 5 planes (again due to weather). Doug Gordon, however was not having a good day, and had to walk far for his breakfast. (And, his day got worse see incidents below). Note: 61C is closed to all traffic weekdays, but is open on the weekend. Winfield Airport Memorial luncheon for Matt Wengrzyn had a pretty good showing, but a bad thunderstorm canceled the flyby planned. Eatin-Meetin A motion carried in May to put this off until September due to cost and other events we can socialize at during the summer. Roster Nancy Bahling and Tom C. are working on a way to put info on a web-based form. They will be working with Bart Gaffney for securing info from Yahoo Group site. (Meanwhile, Corey C. hopes to get standard paper-based roster out with July news). NEW BUSINESS: Pioneer Set for June 18 with EAA Chapter 897 sponsoring breakfast at Juneau for briefing. A discussion on pattern details, rotors, taxiway cautions, etc. followed. Longest Days McDermott airport. Lunch Saturday (leftovers Sunday). Bring a side dish to pass. Meet at Hangar 4, gravel area for camping. Paved runway 6L/24R, grass strip in good condition. Radio Upcoming Events Mathaire is begging us to come out for Labor Day weekend and compliments our club on flying safe and behaving well. (Harold Benisch & Nelsons are again roped in as hosts). Skip Ruppenthal is already hoping we plan a 2006 visit to his icy airport. AirVenture Workday is July 16, with more info to come at July meeting. Need help to get Spirit 03 out of barn and Jerry Eales is looking for help to finish off this project. Be sure you sign the separate Microlite sign-in form to earn your day pass to AirVenture. Shifts in Swap Shop also earn day pass. Flying Related Discussions Pat Spanus passed around Cleco fasteners and pliers. Harold B has donated several catalogs. Steve M. is looking for article from Living On Lake (does anyone have a copy?) 2005 Air Notam booklet available from Steve M, also check on Volunteers Needed for all of our events. Safety orange vests to keep people safe from planes (and them from people), escort YE riders, etc. Won t you spare an hour or two to help out? Incident Report Doug G s bad day continued on return from 61C when his MX Sprint caught heavy rotors and wind during landing. He bent up tubes, but he was Ok. Presentation Ed H. spoke about his trip to Jordan, the wonderful people, and their customs. Raffle / Donations Raffle this month has some really neat prizes from Jordan donated by Ed H. Newest club member Ray M. took home the golden ship. Meeting was adjourned at 9:10pm. Page 8
