1 January / February 2014 EAA Ultralight Chapter 1 Issue 405 With low clouds, intermittent snow, and the windsock straining to point straight North-East, there was very little flying at this year's First Fly In. Over 20 people attended, however, with several non-members from the Fort Atkinson Municipal Airport (61C) joining in the festivities. Inside one of the hangars on the "South Side"of the field, folks discussed airplanes -- building, flying, and everything else related aviation today. The monthly EAAUL1 chapter meeting was spirited, friendly, and well attended. - Rob Thomas Microlite Flyers President Treasurer / Membership Steve Magdic Tom Corso N71 W27015 Meadow Wood Ln N Lovers Lane Rd #16 Sussex, WI Milwaukee, WI (262) (262) stevemagdic@wi.rr.com tom@tcorso.net Director At Large Bob Sullivan 7376 Bay St. Lannon, WI (262) bsully1927@aol.com Safety / Ops Jerry LaBlanc (262) Web Master Rob Thomas klavdivs@aol.com Website! 2 President s Perspective Hello all. I hope you had a great Christmas break with family and friends. With Christmas done and over with, we can now look forward to the new year. Since this me of year is not conducive to flying open cockpit ultralight type vehicles, you will have lots of me to concentrate on s cking to your new year s resolu ons... right?? I hope one of your resolu ons is to fly more and share your experiences and knowledge with others through our newsle ers, mee ngs, events, and websites. As we progress into 2014, I look forward to a year full of flying and sharing my love of the sport with others. We will need to get our 2014 event schedule organized and posted. I will commit to ge ng this done by the end of January. We also have a simulator aircra to finish in me for AirVenture Here are some highlights and updates for 2014: Thanks to the work behind the scenes of Timm Bogenhagen, the Fathers Day Pioneer Airport Fly In and Compe on is back for I will share the official announcement when I get that from Timm. I will then be planning and leading the Chapter 1 group flight to Oshkosh on Saturday, June 14th AirVenture 2014 changes In celebra on of the 10th anniversary of the Sport Pilot Rule, the Sport Pilot Mall will be moved to the east side of Wi mann near Vintage Way. Sport qualified aircra will be encouraged to park from the UL tower south to the Ultralight gas shack. This brings the Sport Pilot crowd back in close proximity to our end of the property. The official name of our area will be the Fun Fly Zone. No more down on the farm. The Chicken coop out in front of the barn will be renamed as well. Lee Crevier is working through Timm Bogenhagen to approve a flight proficiency compe on day on our runway. Jim Beckman will not be able to Chair the Ultralight builders tent this year and we re looking for volunteer(s) that can take on that task. There is a push to build an en re ultralight from a kit in 3 days to compete with an EAA LSA build taking place in the main ramp area as a tribute to Paul P. There will be a S.T.O.L. demonstra on on our runway at some point during the show. We are working on ge ng new fencing, an updated sound system and another set of bleachers installed at our runway. As for our Chapter, I plan to con nue to welcome current and new Chapter 1 members and help them achieve their goals in the field of light avia on in any way that I can u lizing my experience coupled with all of yours. I hope you had a safe and happy New Years Eve. And thanks to everyone who came out to Fort Atkinson for the annual kickoff fly in. I hope to see you all at our next mee ng in February. Steve M. Chapter President Page 2
3 One of the area's most colorful events, the annual EAA Skiplane Fly-In, will be held on Saturday, February 8, at the EAA AirVenture Museum's Pioneer Airport. This special winter event, which has welcomed more than 30 skiplanes in the past, celebrates the unique flight segment of skiplane flying as well as the anniversary of the first-ever mee ng of the Experimental Aircra Associa on on January 26, If weather or snow condi ons do not permit aircra arrivals at Pioneer Airport on February 8, other ac vi es will con nue as planned, including complimentary chili and cake served beginning at 10:30 a.m. The Skiplane Fly-In runs from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM and is free of charge to the general public. Signs will direct visitors to the skiplane area upon arrival to the museum. Shu le services will also operate from Basler Flight Service and Orion Flight Services for those landing at Wi man Regional Airport. Regular admission rates apply for guests visi ng the museum itself. Pilots who wish to par cipate must receive approval and flight briefings from EAA prior to landing at Pioneer Airport. Contact EAA's Olivia Rasmus at or at for more details. Page 3
