Just a stone s throw from Lollard is London s Southbank, home to the National Theatre, the BFI & IMAX, the Royal Festival Hall, The London Aquarium and the London Eye, to name just a few attractions. Alive with the hustle and bustle of people strolling along the River Thames in search of restaurants, shops and pop-up streetfood stands, the Southbank also plays host to a plethora of seasonal arts and culture events, including the London Literature and Jazz festivals, plus the annual Wintertime Christmas Market. The area is also home to the Imperial War Museum. Originally founded to document the sacrifice of Britain during the First World War, it now records all conflicts in which British and Commonwealth forces have been involved. The Cinema Museum is a popular venue which houses a unique collection of celluloid artefacts and memorabilia, as well as film screenings and talks. There are two enduring local repertory theatres: the White Bear an intimate fringe theatre and bar, and Ovalhouse a lively off-west End theatre on the Kennington Oval, opposite the famous cricket ground (which itself is a short walk away). Newport Gallery presents exhibitions of work from Damien Hirst s art collection. The Garden Museum explores and celebrates British gardens and gardening through its collection, temporary exhibitions and events. Weekends wouldn t be the same without a trip to a nearby market and locals love the Oval Farmers market held on Saturdays in the gardens of St. Mark s Church.
