2 02 From us to you Dear residents, When the Bus ervice Enhancement Programme, or BEP, was launched in 2012, it aimed to add another 1,000 public buses islandwide in five years to improve bus services. And now, the 1,000th bus has just hit the road, fulfilling BEP s promise of easier journeys with better connectivity, shorter waiting times and less crowded buses during peak hours. For GRC and engkang West MC, a total of 75 bus service improvements have been made under BEP. Read our cover story to find out more about how this programme has benefited you. We have also included an insert to update you on the bus service and route improvements made in the division you are living in. At the same time, we will continue to work with the Land Transport Authority to improve bus service reliability, so do continue to give us your thoughts via the Town Council s various feedback channels. On a lighter note, check out the 2018 calendar in this issue of Our Home. It includes outline drawings of landmarks found in the neighbourhood for you to colour with your children and share quality time together. 4 04 Cover story 1,000th new bus launched into service The roll-out of a new bus service, ervice 71, onto the roads on 9 December marked a significant moment. This is because the 1,000th new bus had hit the roads under the Bus ervice Enhancement Programme (BEP), also Tan Poh Kuan, 64 marking the completion of the five-year programme. A Government-initiated programme, BEP added 1,000 buses and 80 new bus services to the bus network islandwide. To commemorate the programme s completion, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong took a ride on the new bus service from Block 220 to Block 341 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1. ervice 71 connects Yio Chu Kang Road to Yio Chu Kang MRT station. It also provides a direct connection from Avenues 1, 3 and 4 to Bishan MRT station. I used to wait a very long time for buses, but now they usually come within 10 minutes. Madam Tan Poh Kuan, 64, who has lived in for more than 30 years, said the new service will make it convenient for her to go to Bishan s Junction 8 mall to eat and shop. he is also happy with the overall bus improvements, saying: I take the bus daily. 9 Feature 09 D n t let the centipedes bite When Madam Linda Lim, 44, was resting in the bedroom of her house at Block 517 erangoon North Avenue 4, she felt a stinging sensation on her arm. I thought I was bitten by an ant, she says. But I realised I had been bitten by a centipede when I saw one crawling about on the floor. Her arm became swollen and she had to apply medicated ointment to reduce the swelling. he gave feedback to the Town Council, and Ang Mo Kio Town Council s property officer Dhineash elvakumar promptly brought a pest control team to her house to address the problem. We have had centipede issues before. We will be continuing our weekly routine checks and fogging the rooftop and floor traps in the common corridors and void decks, says Mr elvakumar, who added there were nine units in Jalan Kayu affected by centipedes. Keeping centipedes at bay Keep your house clean and dry at all times. Centipedes often enter homes to look for food and like to lurk in dark and damp areas. Baking soda kills centipedes. Periodically mix baking soda with water and pour the mixture down your floor traps. Leave the solution for up to one hour. How the pest control team TAMP OUT CENTIPEDE What to do if you are bitten by a centipede tep 1 The existing floor trap in the bathroom is removed and a new grating and floor trap installed. tep 2 A mixture of baking soda and water is poured into the floor trap. tep 3 Packets of baking soda are given to residents so that they can carry out regular maintenance on their own. Do not panic. While a centipede bite is painful and may cause redness, swelling and an itch, it is not fatal. Wash the affected area with soap and water. Apply an antiseptic cream. Consult a doctor if the affected area becomes infected.

12 12 Feature Green thumbs up for seven RCs The community garden at Block 624 Avenue 4 is a lovely green haven for Yio Chu Kang residents. But more than that, the plants grown in the garden can help to support residents health too. ays Mr Teo Ging iang, 51, Chairman of Yio Chu Kang Zone 7 Residents Committee (RC): The leaves of some plants are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to bring down cholesterol levels when brewed into a tea, for example. o some residents regularly visit the garden to collect plants, with the gardeners permission, of course. This garden was among the seven winners of the biennial in Bloom 2017 competition, which was started in 2007 to recognise the town s NEW COMMUNITY GARDEN TRAIL The Community Garden Trail was launched in October to encourage residents to learn more about gardening in their neighbourhood. The 6km trail runs through 12 community gardens, in which a wide variety of edible plants, ranging from winter melons, bitter gourds and fruits, are grown. The community gardeners are usually at the gardens early in the morning before 9am or in the evening after 5pm. Come and find out more about community gardening from them today! best gardens. 13 Our town 13 Move with EAE at home What: Launch of Home Improvement Programme (HIP) with Enhancement for Active eniors (EAE) Where: Basketball court next to Block 466 Avenue 10 When: 25 November 2017 Residents of Blocks 461 to 468 in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 will soon have a better living environment. The blocks of flats they are living in are about 40 years old and have been selected for the HIP, which will include essential improvements such as upgrading of electric capacity and replacement of sewer pipes, all fully funded by the Government. Also, more bicycle racks will be installed to cater for the increase in the number of cyclists. The 1,100 households there can also apply for the EAE programme, which will equip their flats with elder-friendly fittings such as grab bars, ramps and slip-resistant floor tiles. The Government subsidises up to 95 per cent of the cost for these optional components. Retiree Muhammad Radin aifudin, who has lived in Block 462 for the past 35 years, finds it increasingly difficult to move around his home because of mobility problems. o the 76-year-old was pleased with the announcement of the HIP: EAE will definitely make my life easier. Planting a green future What: engkang West Tree Planting Day Where: Open field beside Block 470B Fernvale Link When: 4 November 2017 It was a double celebration at this tree-planting event where 12 ea Hibiscus tree saplings were planted. Besides turning the area more green, the saplings also marked engkang West s moving into its 12th year. More than 500 residents turned up at the event, which was kicked off by a brisk walking activity. There were also games and activities to promote healthy living as well as to highlight the importance of maintaining a clean and green neighbourhood. Madam Low Poh Choo, 40, who was there with her family, said: Tree planting makes the environment green. Also, because we took part in the planting, it gives us a sense of ownership.

Fortunately, it was not a real terrorist attack but a simulated one, part of the Gecure national movement. This movement aims to train residents on how to react to a terrorist attack. Residents were also taught life-saving skills like how to perform CPR. At the same event, conservancy worker Aminur was presented a voucher. This was to thank him for putting out a fire at Kebun Baru Food Centre in eptember someone had thrown a flaming cylindrical object into the hawker centre, but Mr Aminur, 37, quickly put out the flames. Explaining his quick reaction, Mr Aminur said: My supervisor had gone for the ingapore Civil Defence Force s fire safety course. And in turn, he gave us pointers on fire safety, including how to use a fire extinguisher.? These are some of the new and better facilities the NRP will bring to residents of Block 567 Hougang treet 51 to Block 580 Hougang Avenue 4 and Blocks 681 to 684 Hougang Avenues 4 and 8. Little wonder nearly 85 per cent of households there supported the programme. Ms Adeline Goh, 50, is looking forward to the covered linkway between Block 571 and the coffee shop. The linkway will shelter us from the rain when we walk to the coffee shop for meals. Currently, we have to carry an umbrella whenever it rains, she said. The improvement works are expected to commence in the second quarter of 2018 and be completed by the first quarter of 2020.

15 Private feed 15 Flower power What: GRC and engkang West MC Tree Planting Day 2017 Where: Luxus Hills Park When: 5 November 2017 Residents living near Luxus Hills Park will get a chance to see ingapore s own version of cherry blossoms. Nine Maingay s Mempat trees, which bear pink and white flowers resembling cherry blossoms, were planted at this annual tree-planting event, bearing the promise of cheerful blooms. These trees, also known as ingapore akura, bloom twice a year. They are critically endangered and were planted at this event to increase their numbers. About 300 residents joined the advisers and grassroots leaders here. Dr Intan Azura Mokhtar, whose ward hosted the event, hoped to raise awareness of everyone s role in taking care of the environment.? Residents also enjoyed DID YOU KNOW activities like making their own gardening plant pots. Ms Prema Latha, 38, whose daughter took part in a children s colouring competition, thought community activities like these were important. They make ingapore more green and help children understand the importance of greenery. RUBBER PLANTATION TURNED REIDENTIAL ETATE The area that Luxus Hills Park now sits on was once part of a swathe of rubber plantations in the early 1900s. The plantations, owned by Bukit embawang Rubber Company, stretched from eletar outh to Ang Mo Kio and from erangoon Gardens to Punggol. During the Japanese occupation, some plantation houses were used as barracks while others housed British prisoners-of-war. In the 1950s, Bukit embawang Rubber Company went into the property business and started developing houses in the area, so the rubber plantations slowly disappeared. ource: The traits Times

16 16 Private feed It was a spooky but fun night for about 200 residents of Lentor Estate who turned up for this Halloween Night party. Lentor treet Playground, where the party was held, took on a haunting atmosphere with cobweb decorations, special lighting and a smoke machine which created a fog. There, partygoers enjoyed playing games such as a mass charade and a rock, scissors and paper game. Children who turned up in costumes got to take part in a Best Dressed Contest. The judges, who were from the Lentor Neighbourhood Committee, selected the winners based on how much the costumes kept to the Halloween theme. Grassroots Adviser Dr Koh Poh Koon got into the spirit and joined in the fun, going house to house trick-or-treating with children and residents. Many residents commented that their children look forward to this event every year, and seeing people dressed in their favourite costumes made the party all the more delightful. 17 Private feed 17 A toast to friendship What: Wine & Cheese 2017 Where: Cactus Road Park When: 7 October 2017 As the sun set to the sweet sounds of a live classical guitar performance, residents of Cactus Green and unrise Gardens mingled over glasses of red and white wine from different countries, cheese platters and finger food. The residents from the two condominium developments made new friends and caught up with old ones at the annual event. Mr Roland Toh from Cactus unrise Neighbourhood Committee (NC), which organised the event, said about 200 residents, ranging in age from their 30s to 60s, attended the event. ome, like NC member Alice Chong, arrived with home-cooked food while others brought bottles of wine to share. He said: It can be quite difficult to get residents in private estates to leave their homes for condominiums, we can t just walk in and knock on their doors so we cater to their interests to draw them out. This is our signature event and it has been popular since it started about five years ago. Residents tell me they look forward to it every year because it has a very relaxed atmosphere.

Held for the residents of Regentville Tower 3 to 5 to mingle and bond, it was organised by the Regentville Neighbourhood Committee. Despite the wet weather, more than 120 residents turned up, where they had a buffet dinner and played a game of bingo to know their neighbours better. Aaron said: I enjoyed myself and hope there will be more parties like this. rinivasa Rao Chappalli is another resident who looks forward to such gatherings. The 42-yearold engineer, who has been living in Regentville Condominium for more than five years, said: We are in our apartments most of the time, so stepping out to attend these events allows us to interact with our neighbours more.
