Born in Fiji,, Kewwa's parents ran a market garden on the island. He ventured to Otago University to study and obtain his Surveying degree, later completing his post graduate studies in Resource Management. Kewwa is married to Mary, has 4 children and 2 grandchildren. He runs his own business, based in Hamilton as a Registered Surveyor. 3 PRESIDENT S REPORT As the year winds down my thoughts turn to what has been happening since daylight savings started and days have started to get longer and the weather has supposedly gotten better. Our local Uni students have almost completed their exodus from Hamilton after final exams and school pupils & teachers are winding down to start their deserved summer vacations. Mums will be wondering what to do with children now that they find them at home during the day and many of us with regular jobs will be desperately hoping that the holidays finally come so we can also enjoy some well earned rest and relaxation.. Aboard the Chinese Yuanwang 6 Space tracking ship Quite a bit has been happening and recently I received an official invitation from the Chinese C o n s u l a t e General s office, to their cocktail f u n c t i o n t o celebrate China's national day and also to visit the C h i n e s e Yuanwang 6 Space tracking ship that has been docked in Auckland's Queens wharf. I was unable to attend the national day celebration however due to other commitments but I did take the opportunity to view China's latest addition to their high tech aerospace fleet. I was accompanied by 5 other members of the committee. The visit was as usual timed to perfection and we were escorted through the ship at a pre-scheduled time. The Ship was immaculately presented and our guides were most gracious and humble in their duties. A big thanks to Consul Li Wen for organising the extra passes to accommodate our larger party for the visit. In this last quarter there have been more casual social events. We held our usual Mid-Autumn Festival at the Canton Hong Kong restaurant which was well attended. We tried a lunch time schedule and while many of our senior folk enjoyed the fact that they could drive home and still see easily during daylight, the feedback from the majority of our members is that the evening is a better time to hold these events. The Fundraising BBQ at Bunning s was held and amazingly almost $600 was raised towards funding our youth activities. Many thanks to the volunteer efforts of our 14 dedicated helpers who each put in a few hours on Saturday cooking the sausages and manning the stall. It was a really fantastic effort from you all. And despite the slight rain, the public really got behind our efforts and ate lots of "Mad butcher" sausages Our WCA fishing trip at Coromandel was held last month with 8 hardy members turning up for an afternoon on the Firth of Thames. Luckily, no one got seasick and everyone caught good snapper. Sid Lim amazed everyone when he apparently caught 4 of the biggest fish of the day however I am sure it was just the same fish as I think Sid kept dropping it back over the side because he wanted to relive the experience.. I ve always felt golf is a game that can benefit our youth both as a sport but also as a game that can be adapted to use in a business context for networking and the like. This year we held a social Ambrose golf tournament targeted at our youth members. It was great to see our golfers support and help the non golfers and the senior members meeting and interacting with our youth. Everyone enjoyed the day and it showed how even non players can play the game with a little guidance. And finally this month our End of the Year Dinner was well attended by 70 members at a delicious Chinese smorgasbord at the Golden Dragon. Again it was a great evening which also doubled up as the after dinner function for our golf day. Coming up at the time of writing is the NZCA Inaugural Youth Leadership Camp for high school aged students. This will be attended by 5 of our younger members and Secretary Janet will be travelling up to assist as part of the camp support crew. I certainly look forward to reading members reports and what they think about these sorts of events. As this is the last newsletter for the year, I would wish each and every one of our members and readers a wonderful Xmas and a prosperous new year. The Festival has grown in popularity over these years, and has now become a highlight of the Auckland summer events calendar with attendance by 20,000 persons or more. The whole group lineup, is a vibrant large-scale modern acrobatic arts groups. Over the years, large-scale domestic and international award-winning acrobatic competitions, has won over 100 awards. LION DANCE TROUPE Unfortunately, we have not been able to find a Lion dance tutor in the Waikato area, however tuition is available in Auckland. 3 people have registered their interest to travel to Auckland for Lion dance tuition, a minimum of 5 is required to form a troupe. 6 PAST EVENTS Coromandel Fishing Trip Report by Paul Chin Morning dawned on the Sunday 20th November. Grey Windy and overcast...not the best day for a fishing trip especially when our group had asked me to guarantee them no seasickness, lot of fish and a good time. They all said my reputation as a fisherman was on the line! We all met at Kewwa's place and loaded up all the gear in 2 vehicles. Lots of rods and reels of all types. I had all my latest expensive carbon fibre light weight specials, Kewwa and his crew with solid bottom fishing tackle and Con with his specialist surf gear and of course there was Sid with his 30 year old stump puller rod and the Silver Ocean city reel that was probably made before half of our fishing crew were even a twinkle in their father eyes. Leaving town at 9.30am we were soon pulling onto the berm at Te Kouma wharf around 2 hours later. A great drive mainly because I was not the driver. ocean. Waves of several metres were coming across the bow though we were still all quite dry being sheltered up in the cabin. I was getting quite worried. The first stop was the nearest sheltered mussel farm which all instructed the captain to take us to...surprisingly enough it was sheltered and as soon as we dropped the first baits...a flapping kawahai came aboard courtesy of Kewwa s son Zachary. After exhausting the first of 3 or 4 stops we up anchored and moved to another mussel farm where we all proceeded to catch a variety of fish including snapper, kawahai, granddaddy hapuka and jack mackerel. Sid showed us who catches the biggest fish by pulling in the first of 4 good sized snapper of around 50-60cms. Each time he made a spectacle of himself by telling us that this one was bigger than the last and at one stage swearing that the fish was so big, he was going over the side to join Davy Jones locker. All in all it was a great day. We all took fresh fish home for the family, everybody had a good laugh no one fed the fish with any Technicolor yawns. I finally relaxed on the way home and from what everybody told me of my snoring in the car I think I was confident my reputation was still intact Finding the boat we soon boarded and by 1.00pm we were heading out of the sheltered berth and onto the Some More Ambrose Golf Tournament Photos 6

7 Bunning's BBQ Fundraiser Despite the downpour of rain in the afternoon of Saturday 29 October, the public supported our fundraising venue and we raised around $580 for our Youth Activities. Many thanks to the 14 helpers who donated their time and contributed to this fantastic effort. End of Year Dinner A brilliant turnout of members and friends with over 70 guests who enjoyed a sumptuous smorgasbord dinner at the "Golden Dragon restaurant. 7

8 WOMEN S GROUP We had a fantastic year with 3 road trips: Auckland Womens Group invited us for a yumcha lunch, a record number of 20 people went to the Auckland Food Show and we had fun at the Pirongia Craft Market. We learned how to make tofu and thousand year old eggs, paper cutting and origami, textile gift wrapping and owl making & had a wonderful hobbies collection display day too. Two new ladies joined us this year but sad to say 2 ladies & their husbands have moved away from Hamilton. So a big welcome to sisters Li & Lu & we have sent our best wishes to Mimi, Shu-yin, Kitty & Alex! Half way through the year we had a mid-winter yumcha and a yumcha lunch to celebrate the end of the year. We meet every second Saturday of the month from 1:30pm-3:30pm except January and December. All ladies are welcome; come and have a look and join in the fun and you will be suprised at how fast 2 hours goes! Those with entrepreneurial spirit are particularly favored to see much success in the coming year. Generally, it's predicted that any new venture may benefit from the outstanding luck often associated with the dragon. Therefore, 2012 will be a very good year to get married, have children, or start a new business. As the world suffers through one of the worst economic calamities in recent memory, bold new leadership will help ease the circumstances of those suffering most from recent financial setbacks. Since 2012 is the year of the Water Dragon, the liquid element is predicted to calm the dragon's usually tempestuous nature, and will give a thoughtful perspective to the plight of the less fortunate. Dragons who can pursue their own passionate ambitions while meeting the needs of others are best suited to navigating the year ahead. Those compatible with the Dragon the Rat and the Snake in particular will also find 2012's circumstances inspiring them to greater personal happiness and professional success. Source: 8

9 MEMBERS NEWS CONGRATULATIONS TO KIT LOW WINNER OF THE 2011 AMP Vault Financial Group Kit(Aaron) Low, Scientist is honoured. During his PhD research, Kit discovered how to develop biodegradable bioplastics from blood. After completing his 4 year biochemical engineering degree with first class honours, at the University of Waikato he has focussed on this new process which has never been done anywhere else in the world. He will use the scholarship to attend and present his work at international conferences around the world. CHINESE NEW YEAR RECIPE - Hee Hing's Buddha's delight (lo han jai) 1/4 cup black tree-ear fungus 1/4 cup dried snow fungus 3 ounces dried bean-curd stick 2 ounces dried bamboo piths 2 ounces long rice (dried mung-bean thread) 1 cup vegetable oil 8 ounces fresh tofu (bean curd), cut in 1-inch cubes 1/2 cup bamboo shoots 4 cups shredded won bok (Chinese cabbage) 1/2 cup sliced carrots 3 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons sugar 3 cups water 1/2 cup raw peanuts 1/2 cup black mushrooms, soaked and rinsed 1/2 cup straw mushrooms 1 teaspoon sesame oil Salt to taste In separate bowls of warm water, soak the following for 15 minutes each, then rinse and drain: black tree-ear fungus, dried snow fungus, dried bean-curd stick, dried bamboo piths, and long rice. In a wok or skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat to 375 degrees. Deep-fry fresh tofu squares for 5 minutes or until golden. Remove and drain tofu on paper towels. Pour off all but 1/4 cup oil. Reheat wok to medium heat. Add won bok, carrots and bamboo shoots; stir-fry 1 minute. Add black tree-ear fungus, snow fungus, bean curd sticks, bamboo piths, long rice, fried tofu, soy sauce and sugar. Toss to mix well. Add 3 cups water, black mushrooms, straw mushrooms and raw peanuts. Return to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer 20 minutes or until vegetables are tender and flavors absorbed. Season with sesame oil and salt. Serves 6 or more. Approximate nutritional analysis per serving, with no added salt: 400 calories, 28 grams total fat, 3 grams saturated fat, no cholesterol, 560 milligrams sodium. Source: 9

12 COMMUNITY NOTICES Dominion Federation of N. Z. Chinese Commercial Growers Special Book Project The History of Chinese Growers in New Zealand 黃土子嗣 SONS OF THE SOIL Chinese Market Gardeners in New Zealand Chinese have been market gardening in New Zealand from 1867 and have formed the backbone of New Zealand s vegetable-growing industry. Chinese growers were an integral part of the market gardening industry in New Zealand, growing up to 80 per cent of the country s green vegetables. Market gardening was one of the key Chinese New Zealand occupations. More than 40 per cent of Chinese were directly engaged in gardening, and most Chinese New Zealanders had a family or business connection to the industry. The history provides multi-faceted insights into a range of social, political and community changes in Chinese New Zealand history. This book celebrates over 140 years of Chinese involvement in the vegetable growing industry and travels through each major region where there were communities of Chinese market gardeners. Combining history and the growers own words, it presents the thoughts, stories and experiences of the life and times of those growers. Lavishly illustrated the book contains approx 400 pages including an invaluable list of Chinese growers from the 1940s to the present day. 成功得自苦寒來 SUCCESS THROUGH ADVERSITY A History of the Dominion Federation of New Zealand Chinese Commercial Growers The Dominion Federation of New Zealand Chinese Commercial Growers was established on 15 January 1943 at the request of the New Zealand government to support New Zealand s wartime commitment to supply vegetables to the allied forces in the Pacific. It has been the national representative body of Chinese market gardeners in New Zealand ever since. Its aims were to promote vegetable production, to unify Chinese growers in New Zealand and to promote and protect their interests with government, retailers and other market organisations. The Federation is unique in being the only national Chinese growers organisation in the world. For almost 70 years it has looked after the interests of its community and a vital part of New Zealand s economy. The book covers the Federation s history including its formation, its relationship with the Dominion Council (now HortNZ), the challenges it has faced and its achievements over the years.
