The year saw many important breakthroughs that advanced the company s commercial and executive aviation businesses, including new orders and new customers. Last November, Embraer reached another significant milestone the delivery of the seventh E190 to China Southern Airlines which was also the 100th aircraft that Embraer delivered in China. The delivery of that aircraft was, undoubtedly, a fitting tribute to the Embraer China team after a decade of relentless efforts. When it entered the market, Embraer and its products were barely known by the public and in the industry. Ten years later, Embraer continues to expand its customer base that now includes many leading airlines in China. The company also enjoys a 76% share of the country s regional aviation market. The achievement could not have been made without the support of local authorities, industry partners, our airline customers, passengers and our friends in the media. From the beginning of 2000 when the company entered the Chinese market, Embraer committed to the sound development of China s regional aviation industry. It worked closely with regulatory authorities and key industry entities to find the best business applications for Embraer aircraft that would be compatible with China s social and economic profile. 11 in Brazil from August 8 to August 19, During the visit, the team conducted an operational evaluation of the Phenom 100 (EMB-500), the Phenom 300 (EMB-505) and the Lineage 1000 (ERJ ECJ). On October 26 and 27, the team held another meeting at Embraer s Beijing Representative Office and conducted an operational evaluation of the Legacy 600/650 (EMB-135BJ). All Embraer executive jet models in service have passed CAAC operational evaluations. Based in Shijiazhuang, the capital city of China s Hebei Province, the E190s will be deployed to establish a hub network within Hebei Province. 13 Embraer 2011 China Operators FSO Meeting Embraer 2011 China operator flight safety officer meetings were held at Hebei Airlines, Tianjin Airlines, China Eastern Wuhan and China Southern on October 17, 18, 19 and 21 respectively. During the meetings, people from Embraer s air safety department introduced updated worldwide ERJ145 and E190/E190 status and safety statistics, accidents and serious incidents that happened in the last year and the progress of some safety-related technical issues. It was, in fact, the 100th Embraer jet delivered to commercial and executive aircraft customers in China. When it entered the Chinamarket back in 2000, Embraer and its products were barely known by the public and in the industry. Now, a decade later, Embraer has an impressive customer base including China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Wuhan, China Eastern Jiangsu, the Hainan Group s Tianjin Airlines, Henan Airlines and Hebei Airlines. The company also enjoys a 76% share of the country s regional aviation market. What are the factors that have contributed Embraer s success? Embraer s Success in China Right-sizing with state-of-the-art regional aircraft that are helping to make China an aviation power house. Embraer ERJ145 and E-Jets are operated by airlines around the world. (1) To build China into an aviation power house with an effective air transport system, it was natural for China to select advanced-technology regional jets. The aircraft promote regional aviation and are addressing the current inefficiencies in the industry, including mismatched aircraft 16

17 capacity to route demand and an imbalance in air service across the country. Mr.Lijia Xiang, Minister of t h e C A A C, e m p h a s i z e d a t the National Civil Aviation Planning & Airport Working Conference in April 2011 that due to overlapping market positioning and airline strategies, China s air transport structure is not efficient and regional aviation lacks sufficient capacity. At the end of 2010, there were 1,506 aircraft operating in China yet only 140 of these were regional aircraft with up to 100 seats. Insufficient capacity is one of the major reasons that China s regional aviation industry cannot meet the needs of regional economic and social development. As a result of the low volume of regional aircraft, airlines choose to either deploy larger aircraft on regional routes, which may result in operating losses, or eliminate flights on low and medium density routes, which leads to gaps in air service in some second and third-tier cities. The airline network in China today serves high-density coastal cities and points with welldeveloped economies. People in these regions enjoy higher flight frequencies and more air services compared to those in Western China. This is contrary to the Essential Air Service principle advocated by the international aviation industry, and also impedes the development of local social and economic growth. Sixty-one per cent of the population has access to air service in the more developed regions of North, East, Central and South China that account for 82% China s GDP. Following the national plan, by 2020 air service will be accessible to 82% of the population, and include regions in western China where expansion opportunities are many. If one company, whether independently or with partners, can flow passengers from medium/large cities or inbound on international flights to second/third-tier cities or conveniently connect every corner of the country with a welldeveloped regional network, then it is bound to capture a large share of traffic. It would secure its competitive position. Airlines also need right-sized aircraft to optimize their fleets and maximize profits. According to CAAC statistics for scheduled domestic routes operated by all airlines in 2010, three quarters of all departures carried fewer than 120 passengers while 21% of flights had fewer than 60 passengers. Over-capacity aircraft deployed on low and medium-volume routes lead to empty seats which are costly and limits profitability. Although over-capacity aircraft may have a lower cost per seat, their trip costs are higher. The revenue generated by so few passengers often cannot offset the high trip cost and, consequently, profitability suffers. Using proper-sized aircraft on low and medium-demand routes produces lower break-even load factors compared to larger jets that, in turn, mean greater potential for profit. (3) Advanced-technology regional jets are required to boost the development of the local aviation industry and economy. To facilitate the regional economic growth objectives in western China identified by the central government, local governments are keen to tap resources and advance local 18

19 industry through air transport. T h e s e m a r k e t s h o l d g r e a t potential despite the current low volume of air traffic. Local airports are eager to expand their facilities to satisfy market needs and provide convenient air travel to raise the overall standard of living. Since low traffic volume can not sustain mainline operations, regional aviation becomes more attractive to developing local air routes in these regions. Regional aviation and local economic development are complementary. Regional aviation boosts the development of the local economy when the economy takes off which also contributes to the development of local aviation. New-technology regional jets are needed to build China into an aviation power house and to promote essential air service across the country. They also grow local economies through the development of the aviation industry and help airlines expand their markets and become more competitive. The airplane was a pioneer in training pilots, feeding mainline cities and helping airlines to grow their markets. As those markets matured, the larger 100-seat E190 came on the scene. Its excellent flight performance, economics and right-size gave a boost to regional aviation. These aircraft that are flying across the country are truly changing the way people fly, bringing more connectivity for travelers and their communities. The airplanes are the engines that are driving development of local economies and helping grow the markets of our customers. (1) Helping enhance essential air service by connecting people and communities. More convenient air service in second and third-tier cities in western China.Tianjin Airlines operates the largest fleet of E-Jets in Asia. Its 97-aircraft fleet includes 25 ERJ145s and 41 E190s. A majority of the 80 destinations it serves are second and third-tier cities in western China. Of the routes Tianjin flies, many of them were inaugurated by the airline, including Tianjin-Erdos, Xi an-yulin, Lanzhou-Dunhuang, Nanchang- Wenzhou, and Yinchuan-Lanzhou. The nonstop flights gave residents greater convenience and overall access. As markets mature, airlines are able to increase frequency. Xi an-yulin is a good example. The route was started by Tianjin Airlines in 2008 and after three years, passenger volume grew to a point that prompted more airlines to serve the market. Today, Tianjin Airlines and China Eastern Airlines operate eleven daily flights during peak season. 20

21 In the fast-developing regions, Embraer jets are helping to build local airline networks w i t h i n c r e m e n t a l f l i g h t frequencies. Over the past few years, regional aviation in China s Inner Mongolia grew slowly as a result of the lack of flights, high ticket prices a n d p o o r s c h e d u l e s. T h e Inner Mongolia Airport Group proposed a regional shuttle flight schedule to provide quick air service from the region s airports. This was intended to be a high-frequency, high-volume business model with Xilinhot as the pilot city. In 2010, China Eastern and Tianjin Airlines cooperated with the XilinGol League Administrative Office and the Inner Mongolia Airport Group by offering its ERJ 145 fleet to launch the Huhhot-Xilinhot shuttle flights. The ERJ145 s smaller size, short 20-minute ground turn around time, excellent dispatch reliability and completion rates, made it ideal for high-frequency shuttle service. It allowed the carrier to make full use of schedule and airspace resources at regional airports. In just four months since the service started in April 2010, thehuhhot-xilinhot shuttle carried 38,000 passengers, a 170% year-over-year increase and a 53% increase in Xilinhot Airport throughput. The success of the Huhhot- Xilinhot shuttle served as a model to be promoted across Inner Mongolia to encourage more shuttle flights connecting Huhhot with other cities.convenient air transportation enhances connectivity between people and communities and promotes economic development. (2) A driving force to boost the development of regional aviation and economies It is well recognized that regional aviation facilitates the development of a local economy. Embraer s fleet in China has become the engines to boost that development. Data from the Qiankun Travel Agency (Inner Mongolia-Xilinguole League) showed that, since the operation of the shuttle flights, tourist volume increased by 70% and profit 50% year-overyear. Flybe, England s largest regional airline operates a mixed fleet of E195s and turboprops. The low-cost, low-fare carrier recently took delivery of its first E175 as part of an order for up to 140 of the type that it placed in Flybe now operates two of the four members of Embraer s family of E-Jets. Because the E-Jets family design philosophy offers airlines a single crew type-rating and 95% parts and systems commonality, the airplanes deliver tremendous cost savings in training, maintenance and crew scheduling. For example, the same pilot can fly an E195 in the morning and an E175 in the afternoon which saves Flybe money and makes for more efficient use of people and airplanes. The key to Flybe s operational success is having aircraft that perform with outstanding reliability. Because the airline offers low ticket prices, each airplane must have high daily utilization to minimize unit costs. Every E-Jet must depart on time, every time. Whether it s an E195 or an E175, here is how Flybe achieves near perfect dispatch reliability. It s a formula for success that other E-Jet operators, including those who fly the E190, are adopting to keep their airplanes reliable, too. Walking through Flybe s operations control room at its headquarters in Exeter, England, you can t help but notice a large wall-mounted monitor that shows the location and status of aircraft with troublesome maintenance snags. There are no E195s on the screen which is, according to George Duffy, Fleet Engineer for the company s E-Jets, not surprising. It s rare that we encounter problems with the E195 on the line. On that airplane, we re pretty good at figuring out what is going to fail and when before we even let it happen. None of the maintenance engineers or managers professes to 32

33 be clairvoyant. Instead, they just listen to the airplane. The aircraft will tell you what is wrong with it, but you ve got to understand its unique language, according to George. So, just how does the UK s largest domestic airline achieve 99.47% dispatch reliability (99.71% in March) on its fl eet of fourteen E195s? The Great Leap Forward From his youthful appearance, you would never expect that George has worked in the aviation maintenance business for eighteen years or that he works in a department with some employees with careers more than twice as long as his. The entire team, however realized that the airline had to change its approach to maintenance when the E195 arrived. We realized when we evaluated the E195 that we were going to have to make a big jump from a mechanical philosophy to an electronic one. John Ward has worked on almost every type of aircraft that has rolled off a manufacturer s assembly line. As Flybe s senior hangar supervisor in Exeter, he saw the need to refocus the more mechanically-thinking staff on the electronic personality of the E195. The younger guys took to it quickly but the guys who had worked mostly with mechanical systems needed to get more involved. For the first year, they weren t able to understand the concept of aircraft health and how to maintain it. But they learned about the predictability of the airplane, and that made a huge difference. They eventually made the leap to electronic aircraft thinking. One of the first things to change was the morning E195 power up procedure for which maintenance personnel traditionally had jurisdiction. Whenever there was a fault message, pilots would routinely call maintenance technicians for a reset. Working closely with flight operations, the maintenance team decided to incorporate the reset guide with the AOM. We were able to empower our pilots and streamline the start up process, says George. And now they no longer rely on maintenance staff to interpret spurious messages in the morning. 34 was more than just adopting a new morning start up procedure. George speaks candidly about the duties of the line mechanics. You have to really understand what they do. They want to be problem solvers. They are accountable for delays. They try to turn the airplane in the thirty-minute standard to keep on schedule. They know the impact of a delay. There s a reason for every fault message but you can t expect the line guys to know everything. Thankfully, the E195 knows everything. Every failure is recorded and the fault history can be downloaded and analyzed. A small team in Exeter reviews those reports and can see patterns across the entire fleet. That s how the E195 talks to us. It took us a while to learn how to do proper monitoring but we ve learned how to interpret the messages. What helped Flybe understand fault patterns was the team s decision to analyze three months of statistics. We ve become good at decoding the data. Even an unexpected tire change is indicative of a failure somewhere. We can usually pinpoint exactly what prompted it. The staff credits the E195 s central maintenance computer for the quantum leap in preventative actions. The CMC is fantastic. It gives us info that we never had before. Sometimes, the problem is glaringly obvious like an aircon pack failure. Other times, we need to do a bit of sleuthing. But we often know what to look for in the reports and our diagnosis is getting better all the time. A Modern Day Sherlock Holmes George and the team realized that they needed to not only organize the volume of data but also the way they processed the statistics and communicated maintenance advice to the field. Responding with a fix within five minutes of identifying a system or part failure is crucial so we don t cause a delay. Our engineers understand that the priority is to get the airplane out. After it s dispatched, they can then ask why we took a particular course of action. And just who do they ask? The most common fault messages and remedies are available to anyone in the organization via a 34

35 FAQ database. Yet technology has forced a process change at Flybe. The maintenance control centre is more like a military command and control centre. And it is closely supported by George. Someone needs to see how all the fleet info comes together. You can only do that when you can sit back and listen to what the airplanes are telling you. George is passionate about technology on the E195 and is considered somewhat of a modern day Sherlock Holmes. I get a week of downloads from the fault history database and can review them all in one day. All the technical info from Embraer, like service bulletins, is rolled down to the team at monthly multidisciplinary meetings attended Flybe s Chief Pilot. They all share opinions for recommended actions. Hands and Brain George is quick to correct any suggestion that he controls everything and sees maintenance as a two-way dialogue between field engineer and headquarters. Think of it as a super brain here in Exeter that is connected to technician hands across the Flybe network. What s different is that we go beyond just the electronic message. Instead of reacting to defects and faults which was our old way, we now interpret signals, map trends and find solutions before they become problems. The result has been an enviable dispatch rate among world E-Jet operators. When our people see the number of delays going down and ontime departures going up, they know our approach is working. And that builds trust among everyone. How will Flybe s maintenance philosophy change with the arrival of its first E175 mid year and the huge expansion planned for the E-Jets fleet? We may add some more automation as we add airplanes, but we won t change our processes.
