9 Our Speakers Paul Valleley Director of Water Services at Anglian Water Paul joined Anglian Water in 1990 with an Honours degree in Geography, including a specialisation in Environmental Impact Assessment. Paul has worked in operational areas his entire career and has been at the sharp end of both Water and Wastewater processes and management. Paul started work as a Graduate Trainee when he carried out a variety of FLM roles in water networks, wastewater collection, water treatment and water supply. He remained focussed on operational management roles at both junior and senior management level. On 1 January 2005 he became OMC Programme Manager to implement Anglian Water s new approach to operational work management by setting up the Operational Management Centre implementing centralised work scheduling and control which remains the foundation of Anglian Water s operational approach today. In 2008 Paul took over as Director of Water Services and has completed the Business Leaders Programme at Cranfield. Last year Paul achieved status as a Chartered Environmentalist, he is currently President of the Eastern Area of the Institute of Water. Kevin Hiscock Head of School of Environmental Sciences at UEA Kevin Hiscock is Professor and Head of School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia. Following a first degree in Environmental Sciences at UEA, Kevin joined the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Birmingham as a PhD student and then Research Fellow during which time he studied the hydrochemistry and influence of past climatic change on groundwater conditions in the Chalk aquifer of Eastern England. Upon returning to UEA in 1989 as a lecturer, Kevin developed applications in stable isotope chemistry to further understand the hydrogeology of aquifer systems both in the UK and overseas, giving particular emphasis to the fate of nitrate contamination in aquifers. In the last five years, Kevin has been part of a multi-partner project investigating how agricultural contaminants impacting on both surface water and groundwater can be mitigated by improved farm management practices. In 2005, Kevin published a major textbook on the principles and practice of hydrogeology that draws on international case studies to demonstrate the integral role of groundwater in environmental systems.
