1 Monthly Update Issue 7 Friday, 07 March 2014 Launch of Young Advisers programme to year 10 at Ilfracombe Academy One Ilfracombe launched its Young Advisers programme to an attentive audience of year 10 students at Ilfracombe Academy last Tuesday ( ). In line with the principle Our Future, Our Choice, who better to influence the future of the town, than its young generation. The Young Advisers programme will let young people have their say on important matters such as youth services, health provision, work opportunities, environmental matters and regeneration. In the assembly Mark Juby (Project Manager) and Sarah Hiscock (Community Engagement Co-ordinator) talked about the importance of listening to young people and their views on how to improve the quality of their lives. Mark Juby said It is a really exciting time to be living in Ilfracombe with so many new investments. A combination of the Verity factor, the refurbishment of the Lantern, the work going on at the old bus station and the inward investment by Wetherspoons all point to a town on the up. Young Advisers will be selected from students at the Academy and from local youth groups. Following some training they will be invited to sit on the One Ilfracombe Teams as full members who knows where this project may go next!

Businesses heard more about the work of the Living Well team from Dr John Womersley, the Ilfracombe Works Team from Robert Zarywacz and the forthcoming launch of the Town Team from Inspector Roger Bartlett. Several businesses said they would like to join the Town Team after hearing about it and also signed-up for dementia-awareness training after two of the businesses in attendance said they would thoroughly recommend it. Four businesses also said they d be interested in taking on an apprentice through One Ilfracombe. Abby Tappenden from Ocean Backpackers, Ilfracombe, added: "Wednesday's event was really interesting and informative. The speakers from One Ilfracombe detailed how different organisations such as the police, the local council, street cleaners, schools and GP's will be working together and alongside the local community to ensure health and well-being, a safer, cleaner environment and the regeneration of Ilfracombe as a whole. This can only lead to a boost in Ilfracombe's economy due to an increase in local

3 The funding, which is being made available from One Ilfracombe s Town Team, was provided after a special day with Ilfracombe Town Council, in which eleven Junior councillors from Ilfracombe C of E Junior School decided to create a competition for shops in Ilfracombe to help enhance their premises. Junior Councillor, Mawgan Dagley said: We are pleased to give you a fresh start by making your shop look the best in town, with a shop makeover worth 500. Junior Councillor Keeley Hamer, added: It s not often the council gives you 500. I never thought I could have the chance to help someone in this way. When I go to a shop I always look for my favourite things like cats or chocolate If I had a shop I would paint it black with twinkly lights, cats and chocolate. What would you do? Town Team Update On Monday 24th Feb and Wednesday 26th Feb the Town Team project group undertook training with the first Town Team members. These were staff from North Devon Council, The Police, Ambulance Service, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue, Ilfracombe Tourist Information Centre and Ilfracombe Town Council. During the two sessions 25 Town Team members were trained and the feedback from the training was very positive. A trial with the newly trained Town Team Members will start on the 10th March for a week. Feedback and learning will take place after the trial. The Town Team will officially go live on the 31st March 2014.

Many of these young people face barriers to entering employment and we work with our partners to overcome these. We re also working with local employers and Ilfracombe Academy to provide practical support in their work related curriculum. My background has been in education where lately I was the Principal of Pilton College in Barnstaple. I continue to work in education as Chair of a number of Headteacher organisations which work in North Devon. I live close to Ilfracombe and am a social rower with the Ilfracombe Gig Club. I am passionate about any project which helps to improve the quality of life for people who live in this lovely town.' Jacqui Kraska My name is Jacqueline Kraska and I am a Project Manger at One Ilfracombe, particularly overseeing the delivery of the Living Well projects. Currently, I am working with the One Ilfracombe team and its partners to create a Dementia Friendly Community and tackle social isolation. Our initial focus is to engage the elderly and support their needs. Furthermore, the organisation has implemented a project that aims to identify all public and private services, voluntary support and community activities available to Ilfracombe residents to help them lead healthy lives. In the future we are planning to do the same with those who feel lonely New One Ilfracombe project managers and socially isolated. We will also establish a Mark Juby and Jacqui Kraska Community Health Watch Programme that actively engages the community to help their neighbours through understanding, knowledge and partnerships. As for me personally my professional background mainly consists of management in healthcare, academia and corporate America. I m American, studied philosophy at university and lived in a few spots round the world. And in so doing, like One
