1 Hartlepool monthly report January 2016 Introduction Welcome to the January 2016 monthly report for Hartlepool power station. These reports are available to all members of the public on and on the Hartlepool Borough Council website, together with copies of the minutes from our Local Community Liaison Council meetings. We are keen to hear the views of our local communities. We recognise that good communication is a two-way process and we welcome your feedback and comments. Safety Operational safety There were no operational incidents in January. Environmental safety There were no environmental incidents in January. Minor injuries There was one minor injury during January which was dealt with by first aid staff on site. The site takes safety very seriously and incidents are investigated fully to ensure they are avoided in the future. Plant status Hartlepool has two advanced gas cooled reactors with a net generation capacity of 1180 MWhs. As at 31 January: Reactor 1: Unit 1 is currently off for maintenance Reactor 2: Unit 2 is at 95% load following boiler cooling modifications

2 Hartlepool visitor centre January has seen 309 visitors taking a plant tour, in addition to eight drop-in guests. Tour times are: Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday AM & PM Friday AM Saturday AM (not always available on a Saturday) For larger groups, a full day visit combining both visits to Hartlepool power station and Teesmouth Field Centre can be arranged. Please contact Louise Corser on or hartlepoolsitetours@edf-energy.com for availability and further information. This month s visitors have included: Newcastle Aviation Academy Ponteland High School, Northumberland Sacred Heart Catholic High School, Newcastle Jesmond Road Primary School, Hartlepool Westgarth Primary School, Redcar Visits from Newcastle Aviation College The visitor centre enjoyed six visits from students from Newcastle Aviation College in January The events were organised by Mark Fuller from the college and students shared that their favourite part of the tour was the vastness of the turbine hall. Students from Newcastle Aviation College

3 Crucial Crew annual awards On 14 January 2016, Simon Parsons, Station Director at Hartlepool power station, attended the awards ceremony for Crucial Crew The children following the event were invited to enter a postcard competition, sharing what they had learned at the two-week event held at the power station in October Simon presented the winners & runner s up from each school with their EDF Energy goodie bags and Crucial Crew vouchers. The competition s overall winner was Ellen Bradley, from St Cuthbert s School. Charlotte Scott, from Throston Primary School, was runner up. Simon said: We have a long partnership with Crucial Crew stretching back 20 years and we are very proud to be associated with such a worthwhile event. The schools and their pupils are very creative with the postcards they make after the event, and it is obvious from the entries I have seen that many of the safety messages Crucial Crew shares during the sessions are taken on board by the youngsters. That will help them to influence their families and friends in terms of safe living. We are now planning for Crucial Crew s 21st year which will take place at the power station this autumn and I am sure it will be as successful as the previous 20 years. Charity fundraising - New Year raffle Crucial Crew winners On 13 January 2016, staff and contracting partners held a raffle to raise funds for Hartlepool District Hospice and Marie Curie Cancer Care. The raffle raised 899 which was shared between both organisations. Marie Curie Cancer Care was appointed as our company charity partner in January Since then, staff and contracting partners at Hartlepool have worked together to raise funds for this worthwhile cause, with our partnership with Marie Curie ending formally on 30 April 2016.

Trish Thompson, Careers Advice & Guidance Coordinator from High Tunstall College of Science advised that the event had been invaluable and a great motivator to all that attended. Dave Bennett with High Tunstall students Hartlepool Countryside Wardens craft activities Various activities have been arranged with our colleagues from Hartlepool Borough Council s Parks & Countryside Wardens team: Friday 19 February Make a bird box in support of National Bird Box Week Friday 8 April Make a bottle garden in support of National Gardening Week Friday 19 August Take a bumble bee stroll and take part in a bumble bee craft activity Friday 26 August Mini-beast hunt and craft activity Friday 28 October Winnie the Witch craft activity Events are being held between 13:00 and 15:00 in Hartlepool power station s visitor centre. 5 Company news New fixed tariff launched Blue+Price Promise February 2017 will replace the company s existing fixed-price tariff, Blue+Price Promise January 2017 and is at the lower cost of 841 a year for a typical dual fuel direct debit customer, based on a national average of regional prices. Customers signing up to Blue+Price Promise February 2017 will get a number of benefits including: fixed prices for 13 months until 28 February 2017; no exit fees at any time and no charge for calling the UK-based call centres. The current Blue+Price Freeeeze January 2018, which offers customers the chance to fix their energy prices for a longer period, is still available. EDF Energy leases new office in Bristol to support the Hinkley Point C project EDF Energy has leased offices in Bridgewater House in Bristol to provide a base for a large part of its Hinkley Point C project team. Their work will support the construction of the proposed new nuclear power station in Somerset which will create thousands of jobs and boost the economy in the South-West. Once fully mobilised, Hinkley Point C will be one of the largest and most complex major infrastructure projects in Europe. The offices in Bristol will be fitted out in the next few months. EDF Energy has already invested in facilities in Somerset, including a new national training centre at Cannington Court and through its involvement in Bridgwater College's Construction Skills Centre. Hundreds apply for apprentice places Sites within EDF Energy s generation fleet saw a late rush of applications for the 2016 apprentice recruitment programme. The company saw more than 1270 applications for its 53 apprentice positions, spread across its eight nuclear power stations and the coal and gas stations in Nottinghamshire. The next stage for the successful applicants will be a series of assessments, followed by formal interviews. Those offered a place will spend the first two years of the four-year training programme at HMS Sultan, near Portsmouth, before returning to their base stations. Next Local Community Meeting The date of the next Local Community Liaison Council meeting is to be confirmed. Members of the public are very welcome to join the meeting; if you would like to attend, please contact Louise Corser via at hartlepoolsitetours@ Contacts: Debbie Simpson, Community Liaison Officer Tel: debbie.simpson@edf-energy.com Martyn Butlin. 6 Glossary of terms: Term Nuclear reportable event or incident Environmental event or incident Outage Boiler Spine Unit Definition Nuclear reportable events are events reported to the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) in compliance with EDF Energy s nuclear site licences. Environmental events arise from wastes or discharges above permitted levels or breaches of permitted conditions. A period during which a reactor is shut down. The periodic shutdown of a reactor including for maintenance, inspection and testing or, in some cases, for refuelling is known as a planned outage. In the UK, some planned outages are known as statutory outages and are required by the conditions attached to the nuclear site licence needed to operate the station. Unscheduled shutdown of a reactor for a period is known as an unplanned outage. Just as your spine centrally supports the main parts of your body, the boiler spine centrally supports the mass of the boiler (around 140 tonnes), including all the boiler tubes (feed inlet, main boiler, reheater, superheater, water and pressurised steam). A unit refers to one of the reactors at the power station and its generating turbine.
