1 1. What is Alupro? The Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro) is a national organisation that represents aluminium producers, their packaging converter customers, fillers and the end of life recyclers and exporters. 2. What is the MetalMatters campaign? The MetalMatters campaign was created by Alupro. It is designed to engage with and inform residents of the benefits of recycling valuable metal materials at their kerbside. In the areas where it has rolled-out in the UK already, councils have seen recycling rates of metals, and other materials, increase. The use of leaflets delivered to all households is a feature of the campaign endorsed by the Government s Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP). More information and case studies are available on 3. Why is the focus on metal packaging? There is high financial value for metals, particularly aluminium (around 600 a tonne of aluminium). Metals are infinitely and endlessly recyclable. The recycling process saves up to 95% of the energy compared to making the metals from their raw materials, as well as cutting an equivalent percentage of greenhouse gas emissions. This means every time metals go through the recycling process it cuts the carbon footprint of the next product made. 4. What benefits might apply to other recyclables? Evidence from the areas that have rolled-out the MetalMatters campaign shows the recycling message cuts across all recyclates. The quantities of metals collected have increased as well as for other materials like paper, cardboard, plastics and glass. 5. How does the Bristol programme compare to others? The programme has been run in over 75 local authority district council areas. Other areas have included Northern Ireland, Aberdeenshire, Ayrshire, Greater Manchester, Sefton, Bedfordshire, Kent, Shropshire, Nuneaton & Bedworth, Glasgow, Lewisham, South London Waste Partnership, Lancashire Waste Partnership, Warwick, Oxford and Torbay.
2 6. How many households will receive the MetalMatters leaflets in Bristol? Over 195,000 households will receive delivery of the leaflets attached to these FAQs. The campaign serves to emphasise the value of recyclates, as well as the practical things householders can do to help the economy and the environment. The wider campaign messages will be spread by newspaper, radio, local TV (Made TV) and bus advertising as well as through social media and Bristol Waste Company s website. 7. When is the MetalMatters campaign happening? There will be an official launch of the programme on Wednesday 6 th September 2017 at Bristol Waste Company, Albert Road, Bristol BS2 0XS. The first leaflet delivery will be completed during week commencing 4 th September to all 195,000 households. The second leaflet delivery will be delivered during week commencing 16 th October. This reinforces the message from the first leaflet (as recommended by WRAP) as well as aiming to educate residents about the metal recycling process and influence their long-term recycling habits. 8. Who is paying for the campaign? The campaign is funded by Alupro and Bristol Waste Company. Alupro will be paying for the project costs from the MetalMatters funding partners. Alupro have worked closely with staff from Bristol Waste, to make sure the campaign supports local services and needs. The aim of the campaign is to encourage householders to increase their metal recycling. 9. Who can you contact with any other campaign questions? If you have any questions, please contact Emma Williams, Marketing Officer, Bristol Waste Company, emma.williams@bristolwastecompany.co.uk or Julie Meeks, Administration Manager, Alupro, julie.meeks@alupro.org.uk ENDS /cont
