PLEASE KEEP A LOOK OUT IN YOUR INBOXES FOR MARKETING MATERIAL ON THE CONTRACTOR BREAKFAST EVENTS FIXED FOR 9 TH 13 TH NOVEMBER. PLEASE PASS ON TO YOUR OWN NETWORKS TO ENCOURAGE CONTRACTORS AND PROFESSIONALS TO ATTEND ONE OF THE EVENTS TO GET INFORMED ABOUT HERITAGE CRAFT SKILLS TRAINING, QUALIFICATIONS, FUNDING AND THE HERITAGE CSCS CARD BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL! Don t forget to book your seat at this year s Annual East Midlands Constructing Excellence Awards! Next week, EXPO is the place to be on the 8 th Oct for all those interested in sustainable construction, new technologies and old I will be there along with Andy Lawson and Mark Parsons to deliver a workshop in the afternoon around heritage skills, sustainability and structure why not join us? For those wishing to travel further north, IHBC have a conference on the Energy Efficiency of Historic Buildings, and back in our own region, REM will be holding a conference to showcase their new Shaping Places for People webtool. Lots of information on training and qualifications with not so encouraging comment on the status of construction education in general however this is countered with news that Jamie Arnold who trained at Lincoln Cathedral and Assessed through North Notts College was officially presented with his NVQ L3 certificate for heritage carpentry. Jamie is also one of the select few in the UK who have managed to successfully apply for and get his Heritage CSCS card and has set up a new joinery business with a friend and colleague good luck to you both. We need to see more people obtaining their CSCS cards and that will be a main focus for me over the next few months. Towards the end you will find information on the formation of Community Interest Companies, important for those interested in Social Enterprise Funding opportunities. Don t forget to send me information that you would like included in this news bulletin. Put the HeritageHUB in your favourites ( and don t forget to pass this newsletter on to anyone you think may be interested, and ask them to contact me if they want to go onto the mailing list. Now, it must also play its part in meeting the global challenge of coping with climate change and enabling buildings to be adapted to maximise energy efficiency, without sacrificing the special character of those buildings, areas and landscapes. 3 EDUCATION & TRAINING HERITAGE CAREERS LEAFLET FROM CSKILLS ON PDF Please find attached a pdf of the Heritage skills leaflet, Making the past part of our future. This leaflet is aimed at the age group and has useful suggestions on possible career progression which will also be of interest to other learners. CONCERN OVER GENERAL EDUCATION STANDARDS A meeting between business leaders and NE Derbyshire MP Natascha Engel has heard that school leaver s basic skills are getting worse. The breakfast briefing hosted by Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber at its offices in Chesterfield, was told that employers are facing numerous difficulties with the structure and red tape associated with the various training programmes. Chamber president, Phil Stanyer said There was deep concern in the meeting about the marked deterioration of skills amongst school leavers; their inability to complete application forms, lack of motivation and poor work-ethic. To complicate matters, many employers felt that they were being hampered in their ability to access various training programmes which would help their workforce. Some of the difficulties concerned the change of Government Departments and structures, and in the hiccup in funding for Train2Gain. From autumn, new legislation will mean economic regeneration in the county will become a statutory responsibility of Derbyshire County Council, who will produce a local economic assessment, including skills. Mr Stanyer said We need to ensure that every school leaver at the very least, is equipped with the basic skills required to hold down some sort of a job, and we need to ensure training and skills in general are oriented towards the needs of employers SOURCE: Derbyshire Times 24 th Sep 2009 NEW 1.9 MILLION TRAINING CENTRE FOR BUXTON COMMUNITY SCHOOL Work has begun on a new state-of-the-art 1.9million engineering centre at Buxton Community School. It will offer young people aged training in engineering, construction and motor vehicle engineering in three specialist workshops. The LSC funded centre will also include classrooms, an office and social area. Work is expected to be completed by March Buxton Community School is one of three sites in the north west of Derbyshire earmarked as locations for new vocational centres the other two being Glossopdale Community School and Lady Manners School in Bakewell who will offer construction and engineering training. SOURCE: Derbyshire First Sep09 CONSTRUCTIONSKILLS APPRENTICESHIP MATCHING SERVICE (AMS) AND DISPLACED APPRENTICESHIP FUNDING You will be very much aware that the construction industry is currently facing the challenge of maintaining employer and apprentice engagement during the most severe downturn to affect the industry for several decades.

4 The AMS offers a broad range of support services with the primary aim of helping businesses retain their apprentices through the downturn including apprentice mentoring, advice for employers about other business support, and help with paperwork. ConstructionSkills has secured up to 1,000,000 of funding through the NAS to offer up to 1000 of funding support to employers who are prepared to take on an apprentice who becomes displaced within the last 12 months of the Apprenticeship. In order to take the maximum benefit from this funding I am hoping to enlist your support in working with the AMS to ensure that any apprentices on your programmes that have become displaced are provided with the opportunity to benefit from this funding. It should be pointed out that this funding is only available to those apprentices who have become displaced from employment within the last 12 months of their apprenticeship framework qualification however candidates who do not meet the criteria can still benefit from the support of the AMS to help secure their future career. The aim of the AMS is to work with existing training providers, secure new employment placements and strive to qualify the apprentice. For more information, contact Construction Awards Alliance, Construction Awards Alliance, Bircham Newton, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, PE31 6RH GENERAL NEW LEASE OF LIFE FOR HARDWICK STABLEYARD Over the coming months there will be lots of changes within the stableyard at Hardwick, Derbyshire, as we (the National Trust) embark on a programme to repair and restore the buildings within the south range. The buildings were developed by the Dukes of Devonshire over 400 years from the 16 th century to support the farming needs of the Estate and leisure activities of the Dukes. As such they tell an important story of the Estate which we will be able to share with visitors during the restoration works and once the buildings are open to the public. The initial phase will see the restoration of the roofs which has been part funded by East Midlands Tourism. There will be informative tours around the stableyard and other activities during the restoration giving an insight into these historically important buildings, their immediate surroundings and the methods being used in their restoration. Ask at the gatehouse for information when you visit the property. We are hoping to secure further funding in the future to make them accessible to the public in the form of new visitor facilities, removing the existing shop and restaurant from inside the Hall. We have recently submitted a planning application to this effect and await the decision of the local planning authority. SOURCE: National Trust, Autumn-Winter events and activities in the East Midlands CONFUSION OVER TORY CLAIMS The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings got significant coverage in the national papers when an interview with Shadow Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport Jeremy Hunt in the current edition of their magazine Cornerstone was translated by the Observer and the Guardian as saying that a Conservative Government would boost Britain s great heritage of castles and

5 religious buildings by up to 40m and further more at the expense of the arts. See Conservative Central Office swiftly backtracked on the claim. In fact Cornerstone summarises the main opposition parties plans to augment the 'much depleted heritage pot. Both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have promised millions extra for the heritage sector, with the Tories promising a cash injection of up to 40m to be paid for through changes in the way the National Lottery is run. This was only news in putting a firm figure to a previous Tory pledge, but was offered alongside a useful comparison with the way the French government has included investment in heritage in their economic stimulus package. SOURCE: Heritage Link News, PEOPLE Jamie Arnold was presented with his Heritage L3 Carpentry NVQ and Heritage CSCS card at a formal presentation held in the meeting room of the Lincoln Cathedral Works Department where Jamie undertook some of his training. See attached for the press release. SOURCE: Lincoln Cathedral SARA CHADD TAKES UP NEW FUNDING ROLE EMRHSTG Action Group member Sara Chadd of St George s Trust based at Muskham Hall, North Muskham, Nottinghamshire has been commissioned to source European and National funding opportunities for the National Heritage Training Academy South West based at Woodchester Mansion in Gloucestershire. The service is available to other heritage organisations. Telephone: (01636) ccc3@talktalk.net SOURCE: POLICY, PLANNING, STRATEGIES & CONSULTATIONS CHARITABLE INCORPORATED ORGANISATION STATUS The new CIO status affects many small charities and preservation trusts in Heritage. The government has been promising a new legal format for charitable companies for some time. It was due last January and is said to be coming in October However, in the interim, some guarantee companies have been wanting to form new legal entities under the new charitable guidelines. St George s Trust has undertaken research in this area and is offering this formation service for Heritage Link members and other interested parties. Also available is our research and support on forming Community Interest Companies, important for those interested in Social Enterprise Funding opportunities.
