1 NEWSLETTER MARCH 2009 Missing since 1987, the St Patrick s Parade has returned. Sunday the 15 th March saw the return of the St Patrick s Parade to Baltinglass. As part of the Patrick s Day Festival the Baltinglass Cultural Group organised the Parade to start from Lathaleere, along the Kiltegan Road through Weaver Square and along Main Street past the Courthouse where the main viewing stand was situated, then around McAllister memorial and up Chapel Hill. Prizes were awarded for the best floats and shop window displays. Led by the Killeshin Pipe Band, this was a fun day out for all the family and a welcome return of a neglected event to Baltinglass. Congratulations to all involved in the Cultural Group for the work put into this important local tradition.

Why not consider doing some volunteering for your community, a chance to make new friends, even learn something new, and share your life s experience with someone else. There are many clubs, organisations and community groups looking for you i.e. Youth clubs, Day Care Centre, Lalor Centre, St. Vincent de Paul and many more in the community. Why not check out your local directory? 4 Fed up sitting in a traffic jam on Baltinglass bridge? Or zigzagging across Main Street to the Bank? In an effort to tackle the worsening situation in Baltinglass the Forums Traffic Management Sub-Group was established late in 2008 with the aim of looking at how all matters relating to traffic might be improved to the benefit of all. Initially it was agreed we would look at a specific proposal to place before the relevant authorities (e.g. Wicklow County Council and Garda Siochana) which would result in safe pedestrian routes across town and adequate car-parking. These aims and the specific project were endorsed by the Forum in January of this year. The Sub-Group has identified 15 individual routes into the town of Baltinglass which require some form of improvement to allow for safe access for all pedestrians. Broadly speaking, these routes cover access from the 60km/h speed limits to the Town Centre. Surveys of each route have commenced to assess the scale of improvements required. Once this is complete, a full project scope will be developed with the aim of presenting this to the Council, Garda Siochana and the wider community. The active support of the community will be vital if this important development is to succeed. To compliment the huge project being undertaken by the Traffic Management Sub-Group we, the Social Sub- Group, have decided to focus on transport for this issue of our newsletter. We hope you find this useful and it may be helpful to put the enclosed time table in a safe place for future use - avoiding unplanned journeys to collect those who never know bus times! Kevin Sheehan of Orion Recording Studios in Knockanarrigan is running 2 & 4 day recording courses on 23 rd March and also on the 29 th of April. The two day courses are 200 and the four day courses are 350. Kevin also does house calls to fix your computer for a reasonable rate. You can contact Kevin on or Kevin@orionrecording.com

For details of their service please phone: or (Baltinglass) OR (Rathdrum) wrti@eircom.net Although every effort has been made to make sure these times are correct it would be wise to check them before leaving on your journey. There are also a lot of rumours about further cuts in the bus service to and from Baltinglass. The Forum did succeed in getting agreement from Bus Eireann to move the Bus Stop to a more central position in the town. Unfortunately, due to a dispute with the drivers, this has not yet been effected. We are still pursuing this and will eventually succeed.we have sent letters to our elected representatives with regard to our limited public transport in the hope that we can not only save the service that we have but improve on it.

10 New Beginnings - From Old Lalor Centre to New Lalor Centre A two year collaboration between Baltinglass Parish and KARE culminated in the big move into the new premises on 20 th January of this year. The old building has become the new Parish Centre and has been tastefully refurbished and will be a vibrant and welcome location for Parish activities. The new Lalor Centre will cater for the changing needs of service users and will be wheelchair accessible throughout. This building will also compliment the existing building and will offer more opportunities for local community groups who wish to utilise both buildings during the evenings and at weekends. 12 The Way Forward Baltinglass is changing and the needs of the community are also changing. We hope the Forum will generate more widespread community involvement where people can engage in discussing the development of the town and surrounding district and the type of community we all need. The Baltinglass and District Forum got underway in 2008 electing the following committee. Chairperson Vice Chairperson Hon. Secretary Hon. Treasurer Minutes Secretary P.R.O. :Noel Lyons :Paul McGowan :Mai Quaid :Chris Murray :Fran Quaid :John Vernon In total there are 38 representatives from 26 Clubs and Associations in the District. Monthly meetings were held in Stratford Lodge School courtesy of Rev. McCullagh, and have been addressed by speakers on policing. Traffic problems, youth schemes and social issues. As a result of liaison with Gardai, nonparking zones have been clearly marked in the town. However, parking in the town remains an on-going problem. Various sub-committees have been formed (traffic management, social & fundraising) and these should more effectively direct the efforts of the Forum to the solving of problems of concern to the residents. Our meetings are now held on the first Thursday of every month in the Lalor Centre and we would welcome your participation and will always be an open forum for the community.
