5 THE HISTORY OF ST. MARY S ISLAND THE BEGINNING THE HISTORY OF ST. MARY S ISLAND AN INTERESTING PAST AND AN EXCITING FUTURE The Romans found good use for the Island, even though it was little more than a marshy swamp criss-crossed by tidal channels. They constructed a road and established a ferry route from the Island to the Hoo Peninsula. The ferry incongruously named Prince s Bridge on early maps remained in constant use right up to the final years of the last century. St. Mary s Island was created from a series of marshy inlets in the late 1800s, when the neighbouring Old Naval Dockyard underwent a large-scale expansion. The regeneration of the area included the creation of the dock basins which now separate the island from the mainland. The dockyard enjoyed an illustrious history of shipbuilding and repair for the Royal Navy over four centuries, with more than 400 ships built there including Nelson s flagship Victory. The last work at the dockyard was carried out in 1984, and several of the industrial, administrative and domestic buildings have been carefully preserved since then. Today, St. Mary s Island remains a part of Chatham Maritime, whose development has been overseen most recently by the homes and communities agency (HCA). It s one of the largest regeneration schemes in Europe, with plans in place to ensure its future is just as productive as its past. With this in mind, the new homes on the island have been constructed to ensure the lowest possible impact on the environment. Highly efficient boilers ensure low energy use and low emissions, while insulation levels are high to keep heating costs down, with all materials free of CFCs. Low energy light fittings are incorporated, with A-rated electrical appliances used where possible. Most new homes on the island come with water saving features such as dual flush WCs, efficient spray taps and water butts in the gardens to recycle rainwater. 6 CONVICT HULKS THE HISTORY OF ST. MARY S ISLAND THE BASINS From the time of the Napoleonic wars to the end of the reign of Queen Victoria, the ox-bow reaches of the river off St. Mary s Island were used to accommodate line upon line of hulked ships. These decommissioned naval vessels accommodated incarcerated hardened criminals and prisoners of war. At the height of Victorian England, thousands of convicts were used to dig out St. Mary s Creek and construct, in its place, Basins One, Two and Three. The spoil was used to create St. Mary s Island. Completed in the 1870s, the three Basins were used by Chatham Dockyard and warships of the Royal Navy for almost 100 years. It was closed in March 1984 by the Ministry of Defence with the loss of around 7,000 jobs and left a legacy of contamination that required extensive remediation before housebuilding could even start. THE MARINA, ST. MARY S ISLAND THE HISTORY OF ST. MARY S ISLAND REDEVELOPMENT HISTORIC SHIPS, ST. MARY S ISLAND In the mid 1990 s, the Government announced an international competition to create a masterplan for the regeneration of St. Mary s Island, a part of the former dockyard. Of the masterplans submitted, Countryside s was the most visionary and they were chosen by English Partnerships to undertake the 150-acre residential redevelopment of the Island. A joint venture was formed between Countryside and English Partnerships, before their interest was passed to the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) and now on to the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA). The HCA is responsible for the redevelopment of the remaining 200 acres known as Chatham Maritime, providing business, retail and leisure facilities to the wider community. Many of the original buildings have been retained; some sensitively converted for modern use and others retained as historical features. These include the Ship & Trades building, which has been converted into a bar, restaurant and hotel, Pump House No 5, and the Police House. 9 EXPLORING THE LOCAL AREA CHATHAM HAS IT ALL CHATHAM A modern town with a rich past Chatham has a huge range of attractions for locals and visitors alike. The whole family will enjoy a trip to Dickens World, which is less than a mile away from Azure by car. This popular local feature celebrates the life of the prolific English author, with exhibits including a Victorian school, Fagin s Den, Peggotty s Boathouse and a Great Expectations ride. CHATHAM TRAIN STATION With such a rich heritage locally, there is a plethora of historic attractions in Chatham, including Fort Amherst. This is a Napoleonic fortress which includes batteries, bastions and tunnels to explore, along with a visitors centre where you can learn all about the history of this impressive edifice. For those seeking an adrenalin rush, there s the Chatham Ski and Snowboard Centre, which has the longest artificial slope in the south east of England. Chatham s train station is just under three miles away from home by car, with journeys to London Victoria taking less than an hour. From the south: From the M2, junction 3, take the A229 and then the A230 and follow signs to Chatham Town Centre, then follow brown anchor signs to the Historic Dockyard and St. Mary s Island. Go down Dock Road, over the main roundabout onto Maritime Way which leads onto the Island. From the west and the M25/A2: Leave the A2 at the A2/M2 junction, follow signs to Chatham Maritime via the A289 and the Medway tunnel. Leave the tunnel at the first exit and follow signs to St. Mary s Island. DIRECTIONS HOW TO FIND US BY RAIL There are frequent train services from London Victoria to Chatham. Journey time is approximately 49 minutes. There are also direct services to London Bridge and Waterloo. BY AIR Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton are within easy reach via the M2/M25.
