~ PRESIDENT S LETTER ~ Well, spring has finally sprung since our last get together at Hill and Dale Golf Course for the March Meeting. We had an informative talk at the March meeting on equine insurance issues by Diane Lindeborne of the Thompson Agency in Johnson City. As always, everyone enjoyed a delicious meal and a very nice afternoon of fellowship. Thank you, Diane, and WELCOME to the C.V.C.A. family. The first weekend in May found many current and several new members at Jan and Sue Suwinski s Sheffield Farm for a clinic with Susan Sheffer Andrews, hosted by Jan & Sue and Judy Sobczak. Wow! What a great weekend. We had seasonable weather, a perfect venue, a very well organized clinic that flowed smoothly, great food, many new friends and a great instructor. Thank you to all that gave so much of their energy and to all of you that participated. Unfortunately, the Bennett Drive had to be postponed. Hopefully, it will be rescheduled for autumn. We are looking for volunteers to help out at the Larry Poulin clinic I June both Saturday & Sunday and also at the C.V.C.A. booth at the Lorenzo Driving Show in July, again, both Saturday & Sunday. Don t forget the C.V.C. A. Picnic at Nichols Pond on July 27 th and the driven dressage show at Carol Gutliph s Windswept Acres in DeLancy on July 26 th C.V.C.A. was accepted as a C.A.A. Chapter club in April. There was no cost to the club and this gives us many added benefits. We are working on a clinic with Jerry Trapani to prepare members for the CAA Driver Proficiency Certificate and, hopefully, to host a Level 1 evaluation in the near future. I would like to remind everyone that the C.V.C.A. board will be changing in November and several positions will be vacant. It is a great way to be in the thick of things and to help steer the club. Be a joiner and volunteer!! Safe driving, Tom 2
Loss of a Friend It is with sadness and heavy heart, that we announce the passing of Jeanne Ferro s beloved Morgan, Ace, in April. Our sincerest and deepest sympathies, Jeanne. "Somewhere...somewhere in time's own space There must be some sweet pastured place Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow Some Paradise where horses go. Overlooking beautiful Cazenovia Lake, approximately 100 horses and carriages compete in a variety of classes including ring work, obstacles and a pleasure drive (formerly the cross-country marathon). For the first time this year, the Lorenzo Driving Competition will include a Fun Drive! The Fun Drive s purpose is to give whips the opportunity to drive a horse in a planned but noncompetitive environment to offer education, safe driving practices and the camaraderie of the ADS driving community. The driver and horse get the experience of negotiating a cross-country course at a suggested timed pace. The Fun Drive provides a rare opportunity for noncompetitors to drive the beautiful Lorenzo pleasure drive course. For more information, visit 4

Annual Spring Membership Meeting Submitted by: Judy Sobczak On Sunday March 23, 2014, 35 members and their guests attended the annual CVCA Spring meeting. This year, this event was held at a new location: The Mad Tomato restaurant at the Hill & Dale Golf course in Tully, NY. Those in attendance enjoyed good conversation with fellow CVCA members and had a delicious dish to pass lunch. Following lunch, CVCA President, Tom Frechette, called the meeting to order to discuss club business. The chairperson of each event highlighted upcoming CVCA events. A mini silent auction was held. Thanks to all who donated items for the auction and to those who were the lucky bidders on the items. All money raised goes into the club treasury. This, in turn, helps to fund the various events the club holds during the year. A 50/50 raffle was also held at the meeting. A huge thank you goes out to the lucky winner of the raffle-lisa Teichert! She graciously donated her winnings back to the club. Well done! Following the meeting, our guest speaker, Ms. Dianne Lindeborne, spoke to us about equine insurance. Ms. Lindeborne has been involved in the insurance industry since She has been co-owner of The Thomson Agency since 1986 and its president for 28 years. It was a very informative and interesting discussion about what many people consider a scary topic. Thank you, Dianne, for taking time from your busy schedule to join us. The CVCA welcomes you as a new CVCA member! Just a Reminder to anyone attending clinics or pleasure drives: If you are planning to attend an event with your equine friend, PLEASE remember to have a copy of their current Coggins and rabies with you. 6
Susan Sheffer-Andrews Clinic Submitted by: Judy Sobczak On Saturday/Sunday May 3-4, 2014, a pleasure-driving clinic was held at Sheffield Farm, in Ithaca, NY with featured clinician Ms. Susan Sheffer-Andrews. The topic of this clinic was, Carriage Driving Traditions, Fundamentals and Fun. We had a full slate of participants with horses/ponies, plus, there were 25 auditors in attendance. The clinic started with a classroom session, which covered basics of carriage driving. Different types of carriages and bits were also discussed. Following a lunch break on Saturday, group lessons were held covering reinmanship techniques. On Sunday, group lessons were also held. These lessons covered what the participants wished to work on. Some cones work was also done. This clinic was a new event to the CVCA calendar for Judging from the response from participants and auditors and comments heard during and after the clinic, the clinic was an overwhelming success. It is a definite possibility that another clinic of this type will be planned/held in the future. Many, many thanks go out to the following people: Jan and Sue Suwinski, owners of Sheffield Farm, for the use of their beautiful facility! To my volunteers: Lisa Teichert, Lorraine VanLuven and Deb Grantham, the clinic wouldn t have been the success it was without your help. Thanks to my trailer parking helpers: Jan Suwinski and Ryan Saul. You had a challenging job, because of the wet conditions of the area around the barn. Due to your expertise, there were no parking issues. And, no one got stuck! To everyone else, who may have helped in any way, large or small: thank you! The biggest thanks of all go out to our terrific clinician: Susan Sheffer-Andrews. Well done! Thank you so very much for sharing your endless knowledge and enthusiasm for carriage driving with all whom attended! The CVCA gained at least 10 new members due to their attendance at this clinic. Welcome to the CVCA! Photos from Sheffer-Andrews Clinic Submitted by Lisa Teichert 7

REMINDER Don t forget to get your raffle tickets for the Foldable Harness/Tack Rack! The club is raffling a collapsible harness/tack rack. The rack works much like a laundry drying rack. It very easily folds up for ease in storing or transporting to an event. It is very lightweight. The rack will be traveling to the various CVCA events throughout the year. The winner will be drawn at the Fall dinner/meeting in November Please consider taking tickets to sell to all your horse friends. If you are interested in selling some tickets, contact: Judy Sobczak at: or jes41@cornell.edu. Ticket prices are as follows: $5.00 each or 3 for $ This is a very handy piece of equipment to have. Hopefully, at some point, pictures of the rack will be available on the CVCA website.
