1 Introduction Is this the campaign for you? Do you have problems with parents and carers stopping on or near the yellow zigzags or the road outside the school? Do you have a number of parents who can t walk to school due to distance the live from school or because they need the car for an onward journey to work or another school? This campaign raises awareness of the zigzag markings, driving behaviour outside of the school and the need to keep the area outside the school safe and congestion-free. Target audience: those parents who park in the road outside the school near the zigzags or stop and drop on the zigzags. Objectives: - Reduce congestion in the road outside the school - Reduce dangerous parking and stopping and dropping on or near the zigzags - Increase numbers of parents and pupils parking and walking (parking away from the school and walking the remaining part of the journey.) - Improve air quality in the immediate vicinity of the school - Building some exercise into the journey to school for those who insist on coming by car Features: Traffic survey work Involving other people (council road safety and enforcement officers) Class/ home work for pupils (design / art competition) Banner to put up outside of school Park and walk leaflet for drivers- targeted at those who stop and drop outside of school Park and Walk vinyl car window stickers Timeline: The campaign is designed to be run over one half term (7 or 8 weeks), comprisingo 3 or 4 weeks lead period to do some planning and printing, and run a banner design competition o An on-street campaign in week 6 Total hours work to run this campaign: approximately between 5 and 12 hours depending on the number of bolt on activities carried out and how much of the work is delegated What to do when The planning guide (action plan resource template ZZ1) provides you with a check list of things to do. It helps you know what to do when and can be downloaded from the website.

2 Campaign outline Core Activities Activity details Materials Assess problem and complete ground work Get relevant people on board and gather support Information distribution / promotion Assembly Banner competition Banner launch and on-street campaign Traffic counts - Get older children (school council potentially) to count number of cars stopping and dropping on zigzags one morning at school run time. You could also take before and after photos of the road on the day; one before and one after the campaign took place. - Contact your local businesses for sponsorship or your PTA. - Contact the borough STA, Air Quality / Climate Change Officer, Governors and parents to get them involved in day two of your banner campaign (see below and who to involve ). - Contact PCSO s (Safer Neighbourhood Police) and the Council to see if you can have Civil Enforcement Officers to help with the Zig Zag Assembly. (We recommend you don t have uniformed officers present on the day of your on-street campaign). Banner competition flier and banner template to teachers and home with pupils to parents, with information about banner design competition and deadline. Posters up around school, and information on school website. Use the assembly to introduce problem, and launch banner competition to pupils and staff. You could arrange for a Civil Enforcement Officer or a PCSO to help out at the assembly. Judge competition entries, choose 2 winners, liaise with printers to organise printing of your banner (see who can help for contact details). (Judging could be turned into an event in itself if you invite your School Travel Plan Coordinator, Governors, and Council Officers) Day 1 - Assembly (number 2) with pupils with banner unveiling. Lunch time - put up banner with assistance of school council and / or winning designer. Day 2 - Hand out drivers park and walk leaflets and vinyl car stickers. Have teachers, governors, STA and Air Quality Officer, and children hand out leaflets, car stickers and point out the banner to parents. Traffic count survey sheet - ZZ2 Template letter - ZZ3 or get pupils to write letters in Literacy lessons Banner competition promotion flier / poster - ZZ5, and banner design guide - ZZ4 Powerpoint assembly - ZZ8 Banner design guide - ZZ4 Conversation with drivers brief - ZZ7 Leaflet for drivers template - ZZ6 Request Vinyl car stickers from David Deane Traffic count Follow up traffic count survey (and photos) Template - ZZ2 Bolt-on activities Activity details Materials Banner competition promotion poster pupil creation Banner design competition as a lesson Name and Shame campaign Ask pupils to make their own posters to promote the banner competition. This could be a JRSO or School Council activity. Banner design takes place in lesson time - If parents and carers continue to stop and drop on the zigzags and park directly outside the school, you could get tough. Invite Civil Enforcement Officers and Safer Neighbourhood PCSO s to be present outside the school and keep a record of main offenders. Use your school newsletter to name and shame these drivers. One school has also fastened lists of offenders to the school railings. Power point assembly may be useful to guide pupils as to poster content (ZZ8) Template letter provided (ZZ9)

4 Banner printing notes With the help of printing and design company Significant Signs we have developed a template for the banner. The printers listed in who can help have a template and banner specifications for this work and can produce good value, high quality, heavy duty banners. Banners at 590mm x 1800mm. Estimated cost is 35 plus a small charge for postage and minimal art work required to make the pupils posters reproducible at this larger size. How to adapt /make more of this campaign If parking and stop and dropping in the road outside the school remains a problem, there are other steps you may want to take: Contact the Council (Parking Services) to get Civil Enforcement Officers (CEO s) on the street outside the school during school start and end times, or to see if they can help in any other way. This might be a good thing to do a week or two after your on-street campaign, with a second follow up visit up to a month after the campaign to act as a reminder to parents. Following your big push on park and walk and keeping the zigzags clear you might want to think about a name and shame campaign for those persistent offenders. See template resources ZZ9 and ZZ10. ZZ10 is a real example letter from Cranford Infants School Head teacher in Hounslow to parents/ carers (resource sheet ZZ10). Run a Car Free Day Set up / re-launch a park and walk zone -See Living Streets park and stride pack ( or WoW walking zone pack ( Build a pledge tree in your school foyer asking parents to park legally and respectfully outside the school. (You could use the parking commitment and walking pledge from the New Families campaign toolkit). Give out park and walk car stickers at parents evenings/ and or use the pledges at these events. Bring your banner in doors during parents evenings to make the schools policy clear to the school community. Don t forget to collect evidence to get accredited use your campaign planning guide (action plan ZZ1) in conjunction with this guidance to help you fill in your accreditation application at
