6 Roller Coaster Information Sheet Please Print Roller Coasters will NOT be allowed on the stage for judging unless they are accompanied by this sheet School Name: Teacher Name: Coaster Name: Members of the group: Complete the following charter prior to arrival to the Park Criteria Vertical Drop Score (cm) -MAXIMUM 85 cm (top to bottom) Time Score total time of travel (use additional rule (c) to calculate Number of Vertical Loops Total number of vertical loops including corkscrews Technical Merit Score Use equation on page 2 to calculate Teacher s Signature Score
7 Judging Criteria The Technical Merit of your coaster will be determined according to the following equation. (vertical drop in cm)) x (# vertical loops) x (time of travel in seconds) ADDITIONAL RULES (a) In order to receive a technical merit mark the steel ball or marble must complete the entire "ride" 1 out of 2 trials when tested by the judging team. Teams should have their coaster tested by a judge before leaving the competition area in the morning. (b) There must be a continuous fixed track that the steel ball or marble follows. (c) Time Score Calculation: The maximum time score allowed is 40 seconds - if the time is less than 40 seconds then the time factor is the recorded time; if the time is between 40 and 55 seconds then the time factor will be 40 (no penalty); if the time is more than 55 seconds then the time factor will be 40 MINUS the amount of time greater than 55 seconds (for example if your time is 61 seconds then your time factor will be 40 - (61-55) = 34).

9 Rubber Band-Powered Vehicle Entry Form Team Information Check In Time Competitor Number NAME SCHOOL SCIENCE CLASS TEACHER Materials & Restrictions There are no restrictions on materials, size, weight or number of wheels. However, the only energy source permitted is the elastic energy of one rubber band, size #33 (approx mm x 88.9 mm x mm) or, if you prefer (approx. 1 8" wide by 3.5 long by 1/32" thick). Commercially assembled vehicles are NOT permitted. However, commercially manufactured components may be used as parts of the vehicle. The "load" will be a 454 gram (16 oz.) box (including contents) of Arm & Hammer Pure Baking Soda (8.9 cm x 11.2 cm x 5.1 cm ) or, if you prefer (approx. size: 3.5 x 4.5 x 2 ). Rules 1. Only one official rubber band per vehicle (provided by judges at Knott s Berry Farm) will be given to competitors. The rubber band may NOT be cut and must remain with the vehicle throughout the run (NOTE: rubber band may be dragging from the vehicle at the end of the run). 2. Guard rails or a similar holding device must be part of the design on top of the vehicle to hold the "load" (load supplied by judges at the event). The "load" may NOT be tied or strapped to the vehicle (i.e., baking soda box must be easily placed on and removed from the vehicle). 3. Only one official run is permitted per vehicle. However, minutes prior to the assigned official run, vehicles may be removed by the competitor named on the RBPV-EF for test 4. The vehicle must be self-starting (i.e., no pushing, external power starts, etc.). Contestants are required to hold the vehicle behind the starting line and simply "let go at the direction of the judges. 5. Propulsion of the vehicle must be through the wheels (i.e., no propellers, no launching mechanism). Transferring the energy of the rubber band to wheels via gears, fly wheels, etc., is encouraged. No remote control devices are permitted. Judging and Scoring 1. Students will receive a Rubber Band-Powered Vehicle Entry Form (RBPV-EF) at the registration desk in the Boardwalk Ballroom. Students must submit this form and the vehicle at the registration desk by 10:15 am on HS Physics Day and 11:30 am on Jr. High/Middle School Physics Day. Judges will inspect the vehicle, assign an entry number indicating student s turn in sequence of competing, and impound the vehicle. 2. All entries must be registered at the contest location as noted above on their respective Physics Day. 3. After the run, distance traveled will be measured and recorded in meters as follows: Starting line to. a. the front of the vehicle when it stops; or b. the point the vehicle strays outside the 0.75 meter wide track; or c. the spot where vehicle drops the "load" or any associated parts. 4. Decision of judges, during all phases of the competition, is FINAL. In the event of a tie, prizes will be equally distributed between winning entries. 5. Competitors are responsible for removing their vehicles. DISTANCE TRAVELED
