1 Bike 50 Rides Schedule Jul to Sept 2018 Cycling with others is fun - socialising as you exercise adds significantly to the beneficial effects. Regular exercise can: improve balance and flexibility; lower blood pressure; defend against heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes; help maintain cognitive function; reduce depression and anxiety. The rides are free. No advanced booking required - just turn up at the start and join in. No children or dogs, please. Use pub car parks only if you intend to have a meal or a drink at the pub afterwards. Please be aware of your own fitness levels and, if in doubt, consult your doctor before starting a new exercise programme. Postcodes given are nearest available to the start and may not correspond to the exact starting point. (T) indicates accessible by public transport. Travel information available from Traveline on We recommend that all participants carry contact details with them in case of emergency. This is a programme of off-road, mountain bike rides. All rides meet 10am, start 10.15am and last approximately three hours. For your own safety and comfort please bring a bike suitable for off-road cycling. Wear suitable clothing. Bring waterproofs, a drink and a snack. Ride lengths are between miles. Grading: (1) = Easy, (2) = Intermediate, (3) = Challenging. Grade 1 rides are ideal for those who want a relaxing, social ride. usually along tow paths and in parks (e.g. Richmond). There may be some slight hills. Suitable for those with some previous experience and a reasonable level of fitness. The rides are typically miles. We also run easier rides occasionally, these are marked 'Suitable for beginners'. If you have any doubts about your off-road cycling ability, we recommend you try a Grade 1 ride first. Some rides are designated 3+. These will involve a high pace and/or technical difficulty. Please note that on some days there are two rides scheduled. You will need to choose which one you want to do. Mon 2 Jul 2018 Winterfold: (2/3) 15m. Total ascent 1427ft. Meet Jack at the Percy Arms Chilworth GU4 8NP. Up to Winterfold and back by a different route. Hilly but not technically demanding. Tue 3 Jul 2018 Sidney Wood (1) 16m Woodland tracks, farmland and quiet roads around Dunsfold. Some undulations, but no long or steep hills. Meet Gerry at the Forestry Commission car park at Sidney Wood. TQ / GU68HU. Wed 4 Jul 2018 Horsley: (2) 17M. Following mix of well ridden Bike50 paths. Taking the easier routes through the woods to the top of the Downs and then down to the Tillingbourne valley, before climbing back to Ranmore and returning to Horsley. 2 Thu 5 Jul 2018 Swinley Forest (3), technical 11 miles. Riding along man-made and natural single trails of the Forest at a moderate pace. The ride includes: Blue Trail, Red Trail, Labyrinth, Baby Maker and more. This ride is for technically confident riders and for those wishing to improve their skills. Meet Nikolay at The Forester's Arms CP, Bagshot GU19 5DH, SU Mon 9 Jul 2018 Bushy Park: (1) 16m An easy16 mile ride along the towpath at Hampton Court Palace to Kingston, Ham and Richmond Park returning via Teddington. Coffee stop at Pen Ponds Richmond Park. White Hart Kingston Bridge or the Pheasantry. Meet Izzy@ Diana Fountain car park in Bushy Park TW11 0EW / TQ Juniper Hill, Box Hill, and Ashcombe Wood (3+) 13.5m with 1,800' of ascent. A ride for confident riders with advanced MTB skills exploring single track trails on the aforementioned hills, and a coffee stop at Box Hill café. Meet Raoul at Denbies Vineyard car park, Dorking RH5 6AA. Lunch afterwards at Denbies Café, and/or beer at Surrey Hills Brewery. Tue 10 Jul 2018 Chobham Common (2) 13 m An undulating ride on the bridleways of Chobham Common. We will also visit Brick Hill Village, Chobham Place Woods, Stanners Hill, Fairoaks Airport and the site where the Martians landed. Climbing up Holmbury Hill and traversing slippery and rooty single trails including Yogurt Pots, Telegraph Road, Barry Knows Best and more. Going up Pitch Hill for more singletracks: Roller Coaster, Proper Bo, Fork Right and more. This ride is designed for confident riders with advanced MTB skills. A dropper post is desirable for your own safety. A coffee break in the middle of the ride in the village shop. Thu 12 Jul 2018 Wimbledon: (1) 17m An easy 17 mile ride, leaving Richmond Park at the Sheen Gate, making our way to the River Thames at Mortlake. Cycling along the Thames towards Putney Bridge we turn up into Wimbledon Common for a stop at the Windmill Café. A nice zoom downhill before returning into Richmond Park for a good sighting of deer. A ride along sections of the Wey & Arun canal towpath and Downs Link connected by bridleways, quiet roads, and technical single track. A few short climbs, and one steep 0.5mile climb. After 1m turn left into Friday Street Rd. Car park is ¼m on right (watch out for low entrance height). TQ / RH5 6JR. (Lunch in the Abinger Hatch RH5 6HZ afterwards) Tue 24 Jul 2018 Shalford (1) 14m A ride through scenic countryside south of Guildford. Meet Jack at the Chinthurst Hill car park, one mile from Shalford on the B2128 to Wonersh. Wed 25 Jul 2018 Bookham: (1+) 14m The first 1.3 miles is a slow climb towards Polesdon Lacey which is why the ride has been given a 1+ grading. We then head down to Bocketts Farm and on to Fetcham. Following a banana break by the River Mole (possibility of spotting a Kingfisher) the route takes us across Bookham Common to Effingham and returns to Bookham on some familiar tracks and quiet roads. 4 Thu 26 Jul 2018 Pirbright Common: (2) 16 m. One gentle hill to start and then single track and towpath towards Woking returning down and up Red Road Hill with a nice single track loop near the end. Meet Phil at 10 am at The Telegraph Pub Putney Heath, London, SW15 3TU for a Thames Towpath trip to Westminster to participate in the Ride London Freecycle (no registration required but if you do before Mid June you will get a tabbard and competitor number!) I do not intend to lead the group amongst 60,000 others therefore you could be on your own to meet back at Westminster for a conducted ride back to the Telegraph. It is 9m to Westminster and 8 miles for a once round London. Mon 30 Jul 2018 Winterfold: (3) 19m. Total ascent 1800ft. Meet Jack at the Percy Arms Chilworth GU4 8NP. Cross country ride including some slopes of Holmbury Hill, Peaslake, Pitch Hill and Winterfold. Hilly but not technically demanding. Tue 31 Jul 2018 Two rides: L1 & L2: Maggie L1: Mainly off-road sandy heathland tracks across local Commons. Mostly level with one or two hills. Stretches of single track through the heather. 14 miles. John L2: Up to 18 miles. Local commons and trails dependant on conditions and riders on the day. Climbing up Leith Hill and exploring slippery and rooty single trails including Summer Lightning and more. This ride is designed for confident riders with advanced MTB skills. Dropper post is advisable for your own safety. Coffee break at the Leith Hill cafe. Meet Nikolay at Broadmoor CP Sheephouse Ln, Dorking. At Wotton, just west of Westcott on the A25 turn into into Hollow Lane. After 1m turn sharp left into Friday Street Rd. Continue past the pond on your right into Noons Corner Road then bear right into Sheephouse Lane (signpost Leith Hill). Broadmoor Car park will be on your left (watch out for low entrance height). Lunch in the Abinger Hatch RH5 6HZ afterwards.

Nice views, chance of mud, some single track and ups and downs, nothing too technical. Meet Richard Tittle at the The Bell Inn, Outwood (TQ ) RH1 5PN Wed 8 Aug 2018 Peaslake: (3+) technical, 10m. Meet Nikolay at 10 a.m. for 10:15 ride at The Cricketers CP (at the rear of the pub), Horsell, Woking GU21 4XB Fri 10 Aug 2018 Cobham (1) 15m, Fairly flat ride, one short moderate hill heading up through Chatley Heath, onwards towards The River Wey through to Byfleet and return via Wisley and Downside. A ride for confident riders with advanced MTB skills exploring single track trails on the West side of Ranmore. Meet Raoul at the West Hanger Car Park at the top of Staple Lane (nearest post code) GU5 9TE, TQ Lunch at The White Horse in Shere. Tue 14 Aug 2018 Chilworth (3) Up to the Downs Link, down towards Shalford to the North Downs Way past St Martha's Church (view) with single track descent to Guildford Lane. Climb to Newlands Corner (view) for break at cafe. Down across Guildford Golf Course then climb to Pewley Down (view) to descend to Chilworth via single track and quiet lane. Meet Nick at Percy Arms, Chilworth. TQ / GU4 8NP Wed 15 Aug 2018 Around the Hogs Back (1+) 23m. Using some quiet roads and trails, this ride skirts around the Hogs back via Farncombe, Compton, Puttenham, Seale and Tongham before riding back along the Christmas Pie track back to Guildford. Coffee stop at the Seale Tea Rooms. It's a longer ride, hence the '+' so expect to be back by 13:45. Meet Phil ( ) at the back end of Spectrum car park GU1 1UP. Park 'underneath' if wet. Late lunch at the Parkway Beefeater next door.

7 Thu 16 Aug 2018 Twickenham: (1+) 18m. Following the Crane River to east of Heathrow and then picking up the Grand Union canal to Brentford, Syon Park and the Duke of Northumberland river back to the start. No hills but a longish ride, with some muddy sections and narrow riverside paths hence the 1+ classification. Coffee and (possibly) cake stop, highly recommended. Relatively few main road sections, but some major road crossings. Interesting rural ride. Meet Chris Berry at Mill Road (Off Staines Road), Twickenham, TW2 5HA. Parking may be tight so please try Manor Road which is adjacent to Mill Road (also off Staines Road) (TW2 5DF). There is a very acceptable pub ½ mile from the finish at The Sussex Arms which provides a variety of real ales /ciders and a reasonable lunch menu. So those who are stopping for refreshments can peel off. Mobile Tandridge (3) 16m Up and along the North Downs & back. Scenic climbs, interesting descents. Coffee stop half way. TQ Fri 17 Aug 2018 Esher Common: (2) 19m An entry level, L2 ride from Little Bookham across Prince's Coverts, Stoke Wood, Esher Common and West End Common returning through Cobham to Little Bookham. Stay on A2044, Woodhatch Road and car park is off this road. Wed 29 Aug 2018 Forest Green: (2) 14m taking in Ockley, Walliswood on a mixture of bridleways and minor roads/tracks and passing through open countryside and farmland. An easy level 2 ride with no difficult climbs. Meet Nick at the Parrot pub car park, Forest Green, just off B2126 Ockley Rd, opposite the forge. TQ / RH5 5RZ Thu 30 Aug 2018 Shalford (2) 15m Ride up to Puttenham Common finishing along the towpath from Godalming. Some hills with sand and mud likely. Meet Barry Taylor at the Scout Hut car park close to A281/A248 roundabout. If no spaces park considerately along the lane. TQ / GU4 8DB. Lunch afterwards at the Queen Vic. Mon 3 Sep 2018 Brookwood and Bisley Ranges (1) 15m We ride over Tunnel Hill to Pirbright and then visit the military and civilian cemeteries at Brookwood. We next head to Bisley national shooting range for an optional coffee stop. We return to Potters via the canal and Four Winds bridleway. Total ascent 720 feet. Meet Barry Taylor at The Star pub A243 Kingston Road TQ / KT22 0DP Fri 7 Sep 2018 Puttenham Common (2) 11m. A mostly off road undulating route to Puttenham, Compton and Eashing. A few climbs but plenty of long downhill sections and lovely views. Some tracks are narrow with nettles so covered legs are advisable. Total ascent about 1087' Tue 11 Sep 2018 St. Leonard's Forest (3) 11m with 900 of ascent. A ride consisting of mainly technical, but not too steep, singletracks. Long twisty sections, requiring good bike handling skills to maintain a pace that flows. Must be comfortable with roots, dips, and rollable drop-offs. 10 Wed 19 Sep 2018 Loxwood: (1) 14m The route includes canal towpath, quiet roads and bridleways. There may be some mud and bumpy sections. Meet Gerry at the Canal Trust car park behind the Onslow Arms RH14 0RD. There will be a collection (voluntary) at the end of the ride and proceeds will be donated to the Wey Arun Canal Trust. Thu 20 Sep 2018 Chilworth: (2) 17m. Starting from a popular venue over some well known paths, in a new mix. Following some sections of the Downs Link, the Wey navigation and the North Downs way. Fri 21 Sep 2018 Chaldon (3) 16m Woodland singletrack, roots, rocks, steps, scenic climbs, interesting descents, possibility of mud, optional Mild Peril. Thames towpath, Weybridge, Addlestone including a BMX interlude, Chertsey, and back to Walton on Thames. Meet Izzy at Cowey Sale Car Park, Walton Lane, Weybridge Tattenham Corner (3): A ride taking in parts of Epsom Downs, Walton Heath, Headley Heath and Stane Street with wooded paths and potentially muddy after rain.
