1 Guided outdoor activities for the 50 plus age group WALKING IN AND AROUND SURREY PROGRAMME October December 2018 The GO50 programme aims to introduce people in the 50+ age group to a healthier lifestyle and the benefits of regular exercise. Walking with others - socialising as you exercise - adds significantly to the beneficial effects. Regular exercise can: improve balance and flexibility; lower blood pressure; defend against heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes; help maintain cognitive function; reduce depression and anxiety. We suggest a donation of 2 per person. If you are a taxpayer, we can reclaim the tax on your donations at no extra cost to you, as long as we have your signature and permission to claim Gift Aid. Ask the leader for details. No advanced booking required - just turn up at the start and join in. GO50 activities are led by experienced volunteers who will meet you at the start and lead the way. Please wear walking boots or other suitable footwear. All walks cross stiles unless otherwise noted. Bring water & a snack. No children or dogs, please. Use pub car parks only if you intend to use the pub afterwards. Please be aware of your own fitness levels and, if in doubt, consult your doctor before starting a new exercise programme. Postcodes given are nearest available to the start and may not correspond to the exact starting point. (T) indicates accessible by public transport. Travel information is available from Traveline on or GO50 Health Walks are shorter walks more accessible to beginners run by Age UK Surrey and supported by the national Walking for Health programme. All other walks are run by Age UK Surrey only and are suitable for more experienced walkers In the event of extreme weather, phone the GO50 office or check the GO50 website before setting off ( Leaders reserve the right to cancel or amend an activity if they feel that it is unsafe to proceed. Please take into consideration the distance and description of the walk and if you require assistance with walking, please contact GO50 prior to attending. All walkers walk at their own risk. We recommend that all participants carry personal identification and emergency contact details with them in case of emergency. 2 HEALTH WALKS Our health walks are ideal for people who would like to improve their health by increasing their physical activity levels. Participants are encouraged to walk at a pace that suits them. The walks are free and no booking is required. On-street parking. TQ / GU5 0UB Steady ascent to Winterfold; descent to Rowly; return along the Wey-South path beside the old canal. WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 3 RH19 DORKING WATERMILL Meeting Place: Start at the Watermill restaurant about 1 mile East of Dorking on the A25. (T) Dorking Deepdene station 1/2 mile. TQ / RH4 1NN Start time: for Leader: ROSEMARY Lunch: at the Watermill optional. Gentle ascent of Box Hill, along NDW to viewpoint and gentle descent. FRIDAY OCTOBER 5 AM01 EPSOM COMMON Meeting Place: Epsom Common Stew Ponds car park. B280 between Epsom & Malden Rushett. TQ / KT18 7TR Start Time: 9.45 for Leader: ANTHONY Lunch: n/a Explore Epsom & Ashtead Commons. Visit Roman brick works. Mainly flat, reasonably easy, but can be muddy. TUESDAY OCTOBER 9 LC06 VIRGINIA WATER, WINDSOR GREAT PARK Distance: 5 miles Meeting Place: Savill Garden car park or park outside first. SU / TW20 0UJ From the A30 take Wick Road/Lane, signposted Savill Garden. Lunch: Savill Gardens restaurant or coffee shop. An easy walk around the lake, through 18th Century Landscaped Valley Gardens, past Roman Ruins and Polo Fields.

3 THURSDAY OCTOBER 11 CS16 PIRBRIGHT Distance: 7 miles Meeting Place: Far end of Mill Lane, Pirbright, ½ mile from Volvo showroom at junction with A324. On-street parking at end of tarmac. SU / GU24 0BN A level circuit of mixed woodland, common and fields, passing the attractive Henley Park Lake. TUESDAY OCTOBER 16 ES21 WORPLESDON AND WHITMOOR COMMON Distance: 4¾ miles Meeting Place: Layby on A322 outside Worplesdon Memorial Hall. SU / GU3 3RF Start time: for Leader: ERYL Lunch: optional after walk A lovely walk exploring Rickford and Whitmoor Commons WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 17 CS38 AROUND BOX HILL Distance: 7 miles Meeting Place: Free car park at Ryka s Café by A24 at Burford Bridge roundabout. TQ / RH5 6BY Start time: Leader: CLIVE Hilly circuit across Boxhill Country Park, and beside the River Mole. THURSDAY OCTOBER 18 RA07 RANMORE COMMON Meeting Place: Stony Rock NT car park, Ranmore Common TQ / RH5 6SY On left up Hogden Lane going north from Ranmore Common Rd, West End. Start Time: for Leaders: ROBERT & RUTH Lunch: Optional pub refreshments Undulating walk via Effingham Golf Course & Stars Wood with good views. MONDAY OCTOBER 22 CF06 ST MARTHA S AND THE CHANTRIES Meeting Place: Guildford Lane car park. TQ / GU5 9BQ From A248 Chilworth Road near Albury, turn north onto Guildford Lane. Car park on the left after 1 mile. Start Time: for Leader: COLIN Lunch: Drummond Arms, Albury, GU5 9AG (optional) Hilly walk including steps with lovely views, through woods and open fields. Includes St Martha s Hill and Church (outward only). Return via Pilgrims Way

Left at 3rd mini-roundabout down Bishopsgate Rd to end of park. Lunch: Pub lunch afterwards Superb views - Windsor Castle, across Thames Valley. Undulating walk through Deer Park and The Village with coffee stop at Olde World Post Office. THURSDAY OCTOBER 25 CS04 FRENSHAM Distance: 7¼ miles Meeting Place: Meet outside St Mary s church, Frensham. On-street parking. SU / GU10 3EA A choice of routes, both visiting the Great Pond, and either the Devil s Jumps or Dockenfield. MONDAY OCTOBER 29 AM02 RIVER HOGSMILL AND EWELL Distance: 3¼ miles Meeting Place: Poole Road Recreation Ground, West Ewell: TQ / KT19 9RY Start Time: 9.45 for Leader: ANTHONY Lunch: n/a Hogsmill open space, Ewell Court park, Ewell Upper Mill, Bourne Hall park. Level, with a railway bridge to cross. WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 31 CS17 EWHURST Distance: 7¼ miles Meeting Place: Free sports field car park at the end of Broomers Lane off The Street in Ewhurst. TQ / GU6 7RD Ascend steeply Pitch Hill, and cross to Holmbury Hill via the Duke of Kent School, returning across fields. WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 31 BH04 DENBIES Meeting Place: Car Park at Denbies Vineyard (just north of Dorking on the A24). TQ / RH5 6AA Start Time: for Leader: BARBARA Lunch: Optional at Denbies A pleasant walk through the vineyard and along part of the North Downs Way with views across to Boxhill.

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 8 CS32 SEALE AND CROOKSBURY HILL Distance: 7 miles Meeting Place: Puttenham Common TARN car park (free), at junction of Littleworth Road and Suffield Lane. SU / GU10 1JH From Puttenham Common follow the North Downs Way to Seale; The Sands; ascend Crooksbury Hill (531 ft). Return across Crooksbury Common. FRIDAY NOVEMBER 9 CF24 HASCOMBE HILL Meeting Place: Opposite The White Horse, The Street, Hascombe (B2130). TQ / GU8 4JA Start Time: for Leader: COLIN Lunch: The White Horse, Hascombe (optional) A hilly walk up Hascombe Hill with wonderful views. Park in pub car park if lunching. After 2nd mini roundabout, turn left and park alongside The Green. (T) Bus 8 Lunch: Barley Mow Pub Enjoy walk to RAF Memorial with views across 5 counties, down to Runnymede, coffee stop; Chair Sculptures, Magna Carta and Kennedy Memorials and back up steps through woods. TQ / RH4 3JT (approx.) Ascend towards the North Downs and Ranmore with fine views from the slopes; Westcott; Logmore Green; Squires Farm.
