5 P A G E 5 Protecting Plants During Frost By Jon Gibson, Complete Landscaping In Pima County, the average first frost date varies from November 21st to December 12 th and the average last frost date ranges from February 7 to April 3. This variation is due to differences in elevation, density of population (i.e. amount of concrete and pavement) and other factors. While our normal lows are in the 40's, the record low was set January 7, 1913 when in hit 16 F. To adequately protect your plants from frost damage you need to understand cold weather; how plants respond to cold; how heat is transferred; how to prevent frost damage; symptoms of frost damage and how to care for plants that have been damaged by frost. layers of weatherproof paper or cloth provide good insulation against cold. Looser wrapping provides better insulation and should extend completely to the ground and at least up to the lower branches or limbs. This wrapping may be left on all winter (mid-november through mid-february). Our thanks to Complete Landscaping and especially to Jon Gibson for this advice. Complete Landscaping has been keeping the common areas of the Lakes in the beautiful condition which makes the neighborhood so enjoyable and our guest s envious. Jon is a monthly contributor to your Castle Rock Times with great horticultural [tññç g{tç~áz ä Çz The best method used to protect plants is to use the heat that comes from the earth. During the day the sun warms the ground, when it is a humid or cloudy day the heat stays on the ground longer. But, when there is a clear ski night, a lot of the heat is lost into the atmosphere. By covering your plants and letting the cover hang off the plants you are better allowing the plant to catch all of the lost heat, as shown in the illustration. Wrapping trunks of young citrus and other frost sensitive trees is a practical way of preventing serious frost damage to their vital stem area. Multiple
