1 ! CALIFORNIA COASTERS Coaster Chatter May 2018 Rally Durango Colorado Type to enter text Officers President Leroy Davis 1st VP John Wright 2nd VP Bob Wyrick Treasurer Dale Johnson Secretary Pam Meyer National Dir George Brodt Alt. National Dir Dick Gibbs Chapter Directors Don Jones Randy Gibbs Membership Sharon Rendall Wagon Master Howard Jones Asst Wagon Master Mike Carle Appointees Fifteen rigs traveled across the country to enjoy five days in beautiful Colorado. Originally, 17 rigs signed up but two had to drop out due to illness or death in the family. With no daytime activities planned, the group was free to enjoy whatever they wished. Sunshine Rhonda Catron Historian Donna Brodt Photographers John Stocksdale Sharon Rendall Newsletter Editors Court & Cris Warren COASTER CHATTER PAGE 1
2 Some of the group toured Mesa Verde, a national park world heritage site, located about 1-1/2 hours driving time from the Alpen Rose RV Park.! Others took the train to the historic mining town of Silverton, while others drove up and met the train. (The Mustache was a great place for lunch.) Some took in the Railroad Museum in town or toured the entire railroad yard. One person even spent time fly fishing. Although there was a winery located nearby, to my knowledge, no one took the time to visit and taste, nor did anyone do any rafting on the nearby Animas River. In other words, there was plenty to see and do on this rally or do nothing at all except relax and read. COASTER CHATTER PAGE 2
3 ! CALIFORNIA COASTERS Our hostess, DJ Davis, is an excellent cook, so the meals we shared were outstanding. We had a tent/club house we could use, so on Monday we dined on Tri Tip sandwiches with all the fixings. Tuesday it was pork chops with gravy and rice. Wednesday was all-you-could-eat beef stew. Thursday, we lost use of our club house but that mattered little, we just moved the picnic tables and placed them in the shade under the trees behind Davis s rig. This was a perfect place for chili dogs with the Crawford s famous chili. (Note: Pat sent the chili even though they were unable to attend the rally. That s real dedication!) Although we did not have an official sheriff for this rally, everyone was charged one dollar. Luckily, none of us actually had to pay because the total cost of the rally was actually one dollar less per person! Unfortunately, that way, we didn t get to hear about everyone s oops! Friday, our last night, all of us attended the Bar D Chuckwagon supper and show. We dined on beef or chicken, or upgraded to both, or even steak. The food was good and plentiful. COASTER CHATTER PAGE 3
4 The after-dinner show was presented by the Bar D Wranglers, who played various instruments and sang old-time cowboy songs. They were really good and closed the show with Proud to be an American which the audience really appreciated and joined in the singing. The only sad note for the entire rally was the forest fire located nearby. It did not really cause us any problems, but the road to Silverton had to be closed on Friday. It s a good thing most of us went to Silverton on Wednesday or Thursday. The wind shifted on Saturday morning, so we could smell the smoke. After we left, the fire has grown considerably. And, as of this writing, it remains totally out of control. A very special thank you to Leroy and DJ Davis for planning this outstanding rally and to their special team of helpers consisting of Dennis and Judy Mueller and Roger and Sharon Rendall. 12 President s Corner As I am writing this, we are in Durango, having a great rally. There are 15 rigs attending. More to come about the rally from Sylvia Burns. As we were talking about rally's, Paul & Virginia Springer, spoke up and said they would do the Indio Rally. Hip Hip Huray! As everyone knows about Maureen Jones, Howard has stepped down as Wagon Master. The nominating Commitee is still looking for a Person to run for Wagon Master. Also we need places to go in 2019 for the months of February, March and September. Please let us know if there is some where you would like to go. Have a great and safe summer, and we will see you in September in Grass Valley. LEROY COASTER CHATTER PAGE 12
